The Lady Tigers (11-4, 8-0) played three of Oklahoma’s largest schools and came with losses. Bentonville was shut out against Tulsa Union (3-0) and Broken Arrow (2-0), then dropped a 3-2 decision to Jenks.

“It runs the record, but I thought we played well,” coach Kristina Henry said. “The girls responded well and we were able to work on some things when we were under pressure and had to force the issue. I think we … Continue Reading ››

7A-West Boys Notebook

Screen Shot 2016-04-18 at 1.54.24 AM SPRINGDALE The 7A-West frontrunner’s first conference loss of the year came with its top goal-scorer sidelined with a sprained ankle. Now Springdale is hoping senior forward Leo Araujo makes his return Tuesday at Har-Ber. The Bulldogs (13-3, 7-1) could’ve used his explosiveness in a 3-0 home loss to Heritage on Friday. Araujo has scored a team-best 12 goals this year, including five against Bentonville, three against Southside and the only goal in the Northside win. “We got good news from the doctor and he’s doing well, so … Continue Reading ››

Kim Crown signed with Southern Arkansas on Friday.

Kim Crown took a February visit to Crowder Community College, home to one of the top junior college women’s basketball programs in the nation.

The 6-foot-1 Greenland senior post verbally committed to Southern Arkansas the same day.

“I’d already been to Lyon’s campus and to Crowder and I was like, this is nothing like SAU,” Crown said. “So I knew that was where I wanted to go to.”

Crown signed with Southern Arkansas on Friday after a … Continue Reading ››

Greenland’s Lyons signs with UAFS

Cheyenne Lyons

Greenland track and field standout Cheyenne Lyons signed with the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith on Friday.

Lyons, an all-state runner, is in the midst of an impressive senior season after being a key part of Greenland’s 3A state champion 4x800-relay teams the last three years. The team set a state record her sophomore year and then broke it last year. Individually, she finished second in the state in the 800 last year.

In addition to the 4x800 and the 800, Lyons runs the 4x100, 4x400 and the 400 for Greenland, … Continue Reading ››

7A-WEST SOFTBALL REPORT

7A-West SBH Standings 4 4-14   ROGERS HERITAGE The Lady War Eagles bounced back from their first 7A-West Conference loss, but it took a while. Heritage (12-6, 6-1 7A-West Conference) led Springdale Har-Ber only 2-1 and even trailed 1-0 for a bit on Tuesday. Lady War Eagles coach Tiffany Taylor even admitted to being a little anxious. But Heritage finally broke the game open with an eight-run fifth inning aided by four walks and a hit batsman. “I think we left maybe 12 runners on base,” Taylor said. “It was nice to finally be … Continue Reading ››

When You’ve Been In Stadiums Too Long

As sports writers, we spend plenty of time in stadiums and gyms throughout our lifetimes.

I mean, we spend a LOT of time there. We're there so much that they almost become our second homes at times.

We're so accustomed to being there that we almost act like Dr. Sheldon Cooper when somebody has the audacity to be in the place where we always sit when covering athletic events. With the exception of the janitors or the maintenance people, we're usually the last ones to leave because our work doesn't end when the game ends.

But, contrary to the belief, sports … Continue Reading ››

Finalists for Bentonville West boys coaching job named

BENTONVILLE — And then there were three.

Greg White of Gravette, Matt Busch of Watson Chapel and Dick Rippee of Springfield (Mo.) Kickapoo have been named the finalists for the new Bentonville West boys basketball coaching position, Bentonville athletic director Scott Passmore said Tuesday.

Passmore said all three finalists were given second interviews Tuesday morning, and he hopes that he can recommend one of those names for hiring to school superintendent Michael Poore some time Friday. That person's name will be taken to the school board during Monday's meeting.

White has been at Gravette for two years, but he has 7A-West experience as … Continue Reading ››

Shell Delivers At Bulldog Relays

When Emily Shell ran track for Providence Academy as a sophomore two years ago, she had to go to Oklahoma for meets because the private school located in Rogers wasn't allowed to compete against any teams affiliated with the Arkansas Activities Association.

All of that has changed since then, and Shell is thankful for it. She can stay closer to home and compete in meets like the Bulldog Relays in Fayetteville, where she won the 300-meter hurdles with her best performance of the season Friday night.

"It's been a really great opportunity for me," Shell said. "It's been a really … Continue Reading ››
