Playing With The Target

Fayetteville avoided a monumental upset at the Class 7A state baseball tournament on Saturday, rallying in the bottom of the 7th inning for a 6-5 win over Little Rock Central. The Bulldogs, clear favorites in this year's state tournament, needed a Kyle Pate 2-run home run after giving up a four-run rally to LR Central in the top of the seventh inning to avoid a quarterfinal round disaster. While Fayetteville (30-3) narrowly escaped and moves onto play Cabot at 2:30 p.m. Monday in the 7A semifinals, the close call shows just how difficult life on the diamond can be with the … Continue Reading ››

7A-West Still Best In Boys Soccer

I've spent the past couple of days covering the Class 7A State Boys Soccer Tournament at Harmon Stadium in Fayetteville. So far the tournament has produced some great matches and props to the folks at Fayetteville for putting together a well-run tournament. While FS Northside - the defending 7A champ - is still standing and in my opinion appears to be as good as anyone, overall the power of the 7A-West Conference in boys soccer can't be denied. Springdale Har-Ber, a 6 seed, along with No. 2 seed Springdale High and 7A-West Conference champion Bentonville have all advanced to Saturday's semifinals. This … Continue Reading ››

Tough Day For 7A-West

Defending Class 7A state champion Fayetteville is the only 7A-West Conference team is the only team left after the opening day of the state baseball tournament Friday. The Purple Bulldogs (29-3) won the regular-season title and earned a first-round bye, but coach Vance Arnold watched his league colleagues struggle offensively in going 0-4. Fayetteville will take on Little Rock Central at 5 p.m. Saturday. The Tigers blanked Springdale Har-Ber 3-0 behind Vanderbilt commit Joey Abraham's 2-hitter. League runner-up Rogers Heritage fell 4-1 to Cabot, while Bentonville was shut out 3-0 by North Little Rock's Preston Oberling. Rogers High took an early lead against Fort … Continue Reading ››

AN FBH-SHILOH Helmet
Staff Photo Tony Reyes The new Shiloh Christian football helmets feature a more shiny, glittery gold color.
Shiloh Christian football coach Josh Floyd didn't want to say his team's new football helmets are "glittery," but they have a definite amount of bling to them with a metalic look The Saints for years have worn a matte finish gold helmet. But the new Riddell helmets glisten with silvery glitter in the gold paint, making them very similar to those worn by Notre Dame. "We wanted a little different look and … Continue Reading ››

Stuttgart, Camden Fairview hire coaches

Two Arkansas high school football programs made coaching hires this week. Stuttgart hired Kevin McCarn from Melbourne, according to the Stuttgart Daily Leader. McCarn was a former assistant coach with the Ricebirds, including in 2012 when Stuttgart won a state championship game. McCarn replaces Billy Elmore, his former boss who was hired as head coach at West Memphis earlier this month. McCarn will also be the Ricebirds' athletics director. Melbourne was 9-3 in McCarn's only year on the job. Camden Fairview also filled its head coaching vacancy this week, hiring Mike Cox from Hamburg. Cox, who will also serve as athletics director, spent three seasons … Continue Reading ››

Soccer Coaches Address Controversy

Boys soccer coaches in the 7A/6A-West cleared the air and presented a united front Monday following a controversy regarding buffer games for red cards. The issue came to a head last week after Springdale added a game with Harrison to absorb a red card by Orsy Gonzalez, who was sent off during a conference game with Fayetteville. The move was made to make Gonzalez eligible for its conference showdown with Springdale Har-Ber, but the Arkansas Activities Association stepped in and ruled Gonzalez ineligible for the matchup. Earlier in the year, Rogers added a game with Huntsville after two of its players received … Continue Reading ››
