Wanted: Home for Bentonville West game

Ah, the growing pains of a first-year football team.

Bentonville West, which begins play next fall, agreed to play a Sept. 9 game against Little Rock Central at War Memorial Stadium. There's just one problem — nobody consulted with Little Rock Catholic about it.

Catholic calls War Memorial Stadium its home field and has top priority over other high schools. The Rockets have scheduled a Sept. 9 home game against Jacksonville, leaving West coach Bryan Pratt and Central coach Scooter Register exploring other options.

Pratt, whose team began spring workouts Monday, said he can't play a Thursday night game that week because his … Continue Reading ››

Mack headlines 6 Springdale signees

NWA Democrat Gazette/TONY REYES Jackson State signee Desiree Mack at Springdale's signing ceremony Friday.

SPRINGDALE — Desiree Mack’s Springdale High volleyball coaches used a unique motivational tactic her sophomore year.

Amanda Williford and Ashlee Kemp kept a folder on the bench with two school logos on separate pages: LSU and a small in-state college. Depending on how Mack was playing, they would hold up a corresponding page.

“I’ve always wanted to go to a Division I school like LSU, so I had to mature and get my attitude right … Continue Reading ››

7A-West SBH 4 4-28   ROGERS HIGH The Lady Mounties broke out of a recent hitting slump in a big way Tuesday afternoon. Rogers (16-7, 7-4 7A-West Conference) hit four home runs, including two by Sarah Hulsey in a 15-0 win over Fort Smith Northside. Rogers coach Mike Harper acknowledged the Lady Bears, who dropped to 1-10 in the 7A-West), isn’t like his team will see against league-leading Bentonville later in the week. But he was encouraged by their approach, after the Lady Mounties were shut out in back-to-back losses to Rogers Heritage and … Continue Reading ››

Prep Track Notebook — April 26

Some of the 7A-West Conference track and field records could be rewritten during this year's conference meet, which is scheduled for Thursday at Fayetteville's Ramay Junior High.

Weather could play a factor this year as storms are scheduled. The other factor is an athlete who is already an automatic qualifier for the state meet being held out in hopes of allowing a teammate an opportunity to qualify.

The most likely record to break is the boys pole vault, which currently stands at 16 feet by Fayetteville's Chris Adams in 1988. Springdale Har-Ber junior Zach McWhorter has already surpassed that mark this season, … Continue Reading ››

7A-West Boys Notebook

Screen Shot 2016-04-24 at 5.35.39 PM SPRINGDALE A 7-0 start afforded Springdale a two-game lead in the 7A-West standings, but losses in two of the last three games have knocked the Bulldogs into a tie for first with Bentonville. The Bulldogs (14-4, 8-2) face the Tigers on Tuesday in a game that could wind up deciding the conference champion. Springdale beat Bentonville 5-0 at home in the teams’ first meeting thanks to five goals by senior Leo Araujo. A sprained ankle kept Araujo, who has a team-best 13 goals, out of a 3-0 … Continue Reading ››

Bentonville Kristina Henry has seen opposing teams bunch several players around the goal in hopes of keeping Bentonville from scoring, but that’s not the way Fort Smith Northside did against the Lady Tigers last week. The Lady Bears put the game solely on their defense and placed nine of their 11 players near the box, which forced Bentonville (13-4, 10-0) to take longer shots than usual. “I’ve seen some teams do that, but not that deliberately,” Henry said. “It was definitely a test for our players, and it was causing them to get frustrated. I just kept telling them if we scored one … Continue Reading ››
