Arizona to Arkansas. Worth it? Yes.

The driving distance from Arizona to Fayetteville for Arkansas’ football camp didn’t deter defensive end/linebacker Brock Haman in his quest for a scholarship offer.
Haman, 6-3 1 /2, 230 pounds, 4.61 seconds in the 40-yard dash, of Scottsdale Saguaro High School had scholarship offers from Arizona, Arizona State, Oregon State, New Mexico State and Idaho before adding another offer from Arkansas Wednesday morning after calling offensive line coach Chris Klenakis.
“A lot of people probably thought it was crazy to drive that far for a camp,” Haman said. “But obviously it paid off and I believe it was good investment. I looked at it as an investment. I invested 18 hours in drive. Was that worth an offer to me? Yes.”
Haman, who praised Klenakis for trying to get to know him as a person during the recruiting process, said he feel any pushed into pledging to the Razorbacks while talking to Klenakis.
“When I got the offer he wasn’t trying to press me into committing,” Haman said. “But he was being serious when he said let’s get out there and try to make you a Hog as soon we can. I knew he was serious about it, that’s what I like about him.”
While at the camp, Haman said the opportunity interact with the coaching staff, see the campus and experience the atmosphere was important in knowing whether or not Arkansas would be a fit for him.
“I could definitely see myself playing at Arkansas,.” Haman said.

Sounds like a future Razorback to me.
Do it Brock. Do it now.
Arkansans have pretty much always had an inferiority complex when compared to other states. Coach Petrino is changing that.
I hope Brock commits. This kid looks like he could be a SEC LB. We could use a few more like him.
He could be an SEC linebacker but he really wants to play in the Pac-10/12. Let’s see what path he will choose.
When I think of the PAC-10 I think of it being out there on the edge of the world. I lived in Phoenix for 300 ooops I mean 3 years. It just felt like 300 years to me. It is a different mode of everything out there. Give me what I have now, white sandy beaches or give me good old Arkansas woods and mountains. It does seem weird that he would tank that much time to drive to the Hog camp and then say he is going somewhere else. IMO
We really need this guy. Kellen Jones committed to Michigan
PeytonHilis, Not disagreeing, just wondering what Brock has said (that I may have missed) that makes you feel that he really wants to play in the Pac-10/12?
It wasn’t Brock himself, it was his high school coach i believe who said that. But he also said that Brock would have a hard time turning down the Hogs too. so…we shall see.
RowdyHog, here is the link:
Scottsdale Saguaro football coach John Sanders let me know this morning that defensive end/linebacker/receiver Brock Haman has been offered a scholarship to Arkansas….”It’s an SEC offer and we don’t get a lot of those out here,” Sanders said. “I know it’s going to be hard for him to say no to the Pac-10 or Pac-12 or whatever it is. It would be hard for him to say no to the Hogs.”
http://www.azcentral.com/sports/Blog/Richardobert/91359
Pac 12 versus SEC. Which would you choose?
On the one hand, i think that conference expansion will help the PAC 12 step it up a notch, but the SEC is already established as the premier conference!
I think Mr. Haman would be remiss if he turns down the Hogs’ offer to stick with a left coast school as college football is not a way of life like it is here in the south and midwest. There are too many pro-teams to compete with for fans and I really would like to get this kid into a Razorback uniform. IMO, the experience he would have in the SEC would far outweigh anything to be found out west, but I am probably a little biased…
Come on Mr. Haman…be a HOG!!!
PeytonHillis, Got it. Thanks.
The SEC is better than the PAC 10 in every way. Better coaches, better facilities, better athletes, and especially better fans. College football out west is a sports afterthought compared to the almost religious intensity of SEC fans. If Brock wants to be able to play good football, get a good degree, and a get fair shot at the nfl while remaining basically anonomous – the pac 10 can give him that. In the SEC we offer better football and a better shot at the nfl- but he wont be anonomous (especially if he comes to Arkansas). Some athletes may not desire the fishbowl effect.
It’d be hard to turn Tempe and SoCal down. The girls are gorgeous.
Mr P
There are pretty girls everywhere like the Beach Boys song they “Wish they all could be California Girls”, It might be a grass is greener effect… but your right it does seem like there is more of a Quantity of pretty girls in the west.
Hoping mom and dad come with him for his official visit and they give him their blessing regarding the distance from home.
Inferiority complex?? Really?? Thats interesting considering we have three of the richest companies in the world here, more millionaires per capita than many states in the country, beautiful natural scenery and wonderful people all over the state. Oh we have our pitfalls,no doubt about it,but inferiority complex? Don’t think so.
I certainly wouldn’t blame the kid for wanting to escape these 115 degree summers. Besides that, these fans in AZ are such front-runners. They only care about their teams when they are doing well, which doesn’t happen too often in ASU or UA football. Both schools have average teams at best and play in an average at best conference. Come be a Hog, young man! If it’s worth the drive to you now, it will only get better come time to strap on the ol’ chinstrap on Saturdays next year!
Brock will get a lot more national tv time here too.
Scout says we got a OLB commit from Alabama.. Shaquille Roberson.
Does anybody know what Haman’s family connection to Arkansas is. It could be the difference maker.
Yep, Roberson committed. An unranked guy from Alabama with 2 offers: UAB and Memphis….sigh.
Not quite sure what to think about these last two commits. I am not sure a LB that no other school wanted is the answer to our LB probs. This class will no tbe ranked any higher than last years.
I see that on Scout BigHog. Talk about coming out of left field. I looked at Rivals and they don’t even have Arkansas listed as a school of interest for Roberson. He’s not in the Alabama top 40. He showed one offer from perenial football powerhouse UAB. BP thinks this guy is a hidden gem or a late bloomer. I see an article on him titled “I want to play for Alabama” Well he’s not a hidden gem now. Alabama can only take around 25, so maybe we are his 2nd favorite school.
Wow, will someone point out to Rodney (although he might find fault with this guys Scout Ranking or be upset we have a 2* NR commit) that we have a new defensive commitment and it’s a linebacker?
Well, I say that, but I think we should all wait for RD to confirm the commitment. Our 5* recruit expert.
He should be upset. We shouldnt be taking guys that have 1 other offer from UAB. This is ridiculous.
Of course he committed here.
This guy has alot of upside.. LB, DE, TE, plus landing Arizona players a First for our HOGS!
He’s a 2* because he hasn’t been rated yet, I think we should wait until he is rated to pass judgement.
Well every other SEC team that didnt offer has already passed judgement.
Lol JDHog there are some prospects that Rivals, Scout, ESPN miss on.. I think we would be getting a STEAL with Mr. Haman!
I know we’ve been recruiting him for a while….not someone we offered out of the blue!
I’m not worried about the talent level or what the recruiting services think about the players, because they don’t know about all of them. I did worry in the past when we would be scrambling to fill out a class in January with lower rated players. But this is July and this is BP. I’m more worried putting the spotlight on these guys so their 1st and 2nd choices of schools can steal them away from us after the luxury of taking in a senior season, like LSU did last year. I’m sure the plan here is to get the committment first and get the player over here so he can appreciate the opportunity he has been given. Then its harder for someone to get them from us later.
DeMarcus Ware went to UAB!
Just because they haven’t offered doesn’t mean they have passed judgement, it may mean they are still evaluating, like we were with Haman and the others on the site.
On these recruiting services evaluations….remember that these kids haven’t played their Sr. years yet. Again…I trust our coaches evaluations more than a recruiting services.
DeMarcus Ware went to UAB!

That’s nuts !! To play Basketball???????????
http://www2.oanow.com/blogs/david-morrison/2010/jul/30/4/reeltowns-roberson-commits-arkansas-ar-643334/
oldhog, I believe Ware went to Troy…
Ware went to Troy. Regardless, I dont care about stars either, but I damn sure care about what other offers a kid holds. The SEC has the best, most accomplished, highest paid coaches (talent evaluators) in the world. Not one of them thought the kid was worth an offer. That tells me all I need to know.
You guys can be as blind and naive as you want, but beating UAB and Memphis for recruits is nothing to be happy about. The last two commits now are blah as blah gets. At least Riles did have a Miss St offer. A perreniall SEC bottom feeder, but SEC school none the less.
Ill never convince you and am not really trying to, but this commit is very disappointing.
Again…another long, lanky athletic type…this is what BP likes.
For some of the nimrods…wait till their Sr. year is over and see who comes trying to steal him away!

Blind sheep. This kid even said he “didnt feel like waiting for the bigger schools like Alabama and Auburn to offer”. Really? Well, thanks for throwing little Arkansas a bone since you didnt want to wait on the “bigger” schools.
The_Real_JT, I have to disagree. I do agree with you that a kid’s offers mean a lot, more to me than their “stars” but it’s really too early to judge. From what I hear, Bama and Auburn are very interested, just haven’t offered. I really believe he will get his offers, and I have a feeling he will end up in another SEC team’s jersey when it’s all said and done.
what kid? and yeah, i would consider Alabama a “bigger” and better school, is that news to you?. Auburn though i cannot.
Don’t be surprised if he flips if the “bigger” schools offer.
I agree Bama is a “bigger” school, but that is some way to start off your relationship with your new school, coaches, and fan base. MrPRFCT, we dont have to worry about that because Bama or Auburn wouldnt offer this kid in a million years.
It is stunning that a kid from a small town in Alabama perceives Bama and Auburn to be “big” schools.
BP’s work will be cut out for him if/when one, or both, of them decides to offer after the football season is over.
Look at the guys RD wrote about in his blog today that we have offered or are about to offer. Here are their offers:
Jermaine Sams: SMU & South Alabama
Trevon Pendleton: Air Force & Ball St
Trevon Lewis: ZERO offers
Kentrell Brothers: Arizona, Arizona State, Baylor, Kansas, Kansas State, Washington and Tulsa.
I mean, cmon. These are just the ones RD wrote about today. I could list tons more kids that have offers from Arkansas and then no other BCS schools. A few more that have offers from Ark and maybe a KY.
This is the best coaching staff the U of Ark has EVER had on campus. They can coach guys up, game plan, and strategize with anyone. However, we will never be where we want with recruiting like this. It is a fact backed up by decades and decades and decades of on the field results.
This guy looks very good….I think he is a keeper. Glad to have him onboard. I couldn’t care less about Alabama or Auburn. He is a hog now…and WELCOM SIR
To the Real JT. I think this articule blows your argument too hell.http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?page=NextLevel6
pre-season 2nd in the west behind the #1 team in the country is not a bad place to be with all of our terrible recruiting
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?page=NextLevel6
This kid is absolutely SEC style LB. 6’4″ 230lbs 4.6 40. Whats his bench? I cant find any video on him yet, is there anyone who could help me with that? Are we recruiting him for the Outside or the Mike? Sorry for all the questions, just dont know much personally! From the concensus of the Board I hope hes a Hog!!!! WPS!
jamhog,
I am not worried about how many draft picks we produce. Im worried about how many championships we win. Want to list the last what 5, 10 BCS champions and then their average annual recruiting ranking?
Yeah, it wouldnt be pretty for you.
I remember a coach at Arkansas not all that long ago that recruited “athletes” and people gnashed teeth forever over his not getting Star players.
It didn’t keep him from winning championships and even a National Championship. He’d just smile and plug in another athlete.
I’ve been trying to find the article about two of Petrino’s Louisville classes where they were ranked about 43 and 52 on scout and they got reevaluated to a top 10 and top 15 class after 4 years was up. Anybody know where it is?
MooMoo, try cfn.scout.com
Nolan had a gift for that.
Jamhog is right on….if it’s that hard to evaluate guys coming out of college with the film and all the combines they go thru, how do you expect a recruiting service to evaluate kids not even into their sr year of high school and the vast majority they’ve never even seen play?
There are more non-BCS schools, yet more BCS athletes were drafted in the first 3 rounds.
To The Real JT. NFL draft picks? The point is, major colleges miss out on future NFL players ALL THE TIME. To say that this kid isn’t any good because no other major schools has offered is stupid.
Shaquille Robenson commits to Arkansas. Did I miss this or something?
Roberson, sorry. http://recruiting.scout.com/a.z?s=73&p=8&c=1&nid=4740839
Thank you MRPRFCT.

This re-ranks all of the 2003 classes which was Petrino’s first year. It went from 48 to 9.
http://cfn.scout.com/2/726003.html
This is the 2004 class. It went from 54 to 14.
I don’t think they did 2005′s class, but he wouldn’t have gotten to coach them for long since that was his 2nd to last year. The first class got four years of him and the second got three. He left in January 2007.
Another note: none of his players were considered “misses”. MIght be because most of them weren’t rated too highly though.
Conclusion: we’ll be alright
Thanks for the info Hog n OKC.

That’s 14 commits now for us I think, right?
About stars, remember the guy who won the Heisman last year. Scout had him rated a 3* coming out of high school in Michigan. Where did all the 4 and 5* backs go?
Yep, that would make #14.
How many schollys are we expected to us now after losing players to Comm. Colleges?
*use
I should have said, what happened to all the 4 and 5* backs?
I think this guy hasn’t been noticed because he plays for a small school. He made 152 tackles last year, his first, at linebacker, which is outstanding at any level. He appears to be a lot like the guy from this years class, Braylon Mitchell, who I think will become an elite football player.
I am talking about Roberson, not Haman.
I think Jacoby Walker will beat out Braylon Mitchell eventually, if both stick around.

???
I want some film on Shaquille Roberson.
We will see but Willy was saying earlier that he expected Mitchell to get playing time this year or something to that effect.
You must mean Mitchell the QB from Louisana..not Braylon from Arkansas
Brandon Mitchell is the QB the other Mitchell is a new recruit.
Yes, I know I am talking about 2010 recruit Braylon Mitchell from Heber Springs. Robinson seems to like his athleticism and expects him to contribute as a true freshman this year.
rivals or richard has not verified the commit?
Jamhog,
How man of those non BCS schools in that article have won a championship?
You can have 1 or 2. There are exceptions to every rule, but you can NOT have multiple kids with no signigifact offers and expect to win at a high level. You can not have recruiting classes ranked in the 40s and expect to win championships. You just cant. It has never happened once ever. There is no argument here. It is not my opinion, it is a proven fact by looking at every BCS champion and in turn looking at their recruiting rankings.
I cant for the life of me understand how anyone doesnt get this. Texas, USC, LSU, Alabama, FLorida, etc who win BCS titles have recruiting classes ranked in the top 10 or higher pretty much every single year. It is plain as day.
Arkansas will NEVER, EVER, EVER win SEC and BCS championships with recruiting classes in the 30s and 40s, hell even the 20s. Nobidy else will either for that matter. There is no rebuttal to this argument that can be backed up with any resemblance of evidence.
Espn, Hawgsillustrated has, as well as yahoo sports has said Arkansas has offered along with Memhis, UAPB and one other school and he has accepted the offer to Arkansas. Not sure if there is anymore on this, could be another Joseph Byrd situation, who knows yet?
Richard, could you please elaborate any information you may have on the Shaquille Roberson Commitment or any word on the issue?

I read on scout that the commitment had not been accepted yet. HI doesn’t even have it as their lead story.
Fact: No BCS national champion from 1998 to 2009 has ever won a national championship without a #1 ranked recruiting class.
I don’t believe a #1 ranked class is possible at Arkansas so winning a national championship at Arkansas is impossible.
#1 ranked recruiting class = Winning National Championship
Texas
Alabama
Florida
Miami
Florida State
Tenn
USC
LSU
Oklahoma
Interesting stat HogFan. I was watching a football rerun on TV tonight and the trivia question was “what BCS National Champion had the lowest pre-season ranking?” The answer was Oklahoma in 2000 with a rank of 19th. So from that stat you could conclude that anybody ranked in the pre-season top 20 has a chance.
I don’t think we had a #1 recruiting class in basketball when we won our National Championship in 1994, so this stat must be relegated to football.
Did you know that its possible to flip a coin and it come up heads 12 times in a row. If it did this, would you then state that it was impossible for the coin to ever come up tails?

What percent of time do you flip a coin that you get 12 heads in a row???
A very low number right?
Well without a #1 ranked recruiting class Arkansas’s chance of ever winning a national championship are that low.
Boise States chances seem to be pretty high.. But they’re probly the exception…
Yea, the coin flip, not my best analogy. I just don’t understand the #1 in recruiting thing though when most of the time the services don’t agree on who was #1. And possibly one team could have won it when their #1 recruiting class was the freshmen who didn’t play much. I think if you can consistently be in the top 10-20, and you have other advantages, like coaching, etc. you can challenge.
Scout, Rivals, or ESPN insider. Every recruiting service that had a #1 ranked class from 98-09 went on to play in the National championship.
How we forget Bama has the #1 ranked class in 2007 and 2008. Won the title in 2009.
