Speed demon has no qualms about committing

“I just want to look at the campus,” said Merrill, who also plays point guard in basketball. “If I like what I see I might go ahead and commit.”

Merrill said he had about 900 receiving yards and about 16 touchdowns while rushing for about 300 yards as a junior for the Class 3A Yellowjackets (12-1). He had 60 receptions for 700 yards and 5 touchdowns as a sophomore.

Merrill, who’s being recruited by receiver coach Kris Cinkovich, reports scholarship offers from Arkansas, Michigan State and Louisiana-Lafayette.

“I’ll go out there and block and run good routes,” said Merrill, who reports a 38-inch vertical. “I have good hands and breakaway speed.”

St. Augustine Coach Joey Wiles believes Merrill has the necessary physical tools to make an impact on the major college level.

“He’s a Division I receiver,” Wiles said. “He has great hands and great speed. Athletically, he’s just a very smooth player. He can run by you. We played Andrew Jackson that has a corner going to Georgia, and he ran by him a couple of times and caught deep balls. He’s a burner.”
