Arkansas signed defensive lineman Kevin Lowery out of Gainesville, Fla., in 2009 but he fell short academically and had to attend junior college.
The Hogs are back in town and are looking hard at defensive lineman Trevarris Saulsberry.
Saulsberry., 6-4, 262, 5.1 has offers from Maarshall, Florida International and South Florida while receiving interest from Arkansas, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida State, Miami and others.
Saulsberry’s teammate, quarterback Ryan McGriff visited Fayetteville on Feb. 6.
“He said he loved it,” Saulsberry said. “He said the facilities are nice and everything is well organized. He said the coaches were laid back and were real nice.”
Saulsberry, who’s being recruited as a defensive end and tackle, has visited Florida State, Florida International, South Carolina, South Florida with plans to visit Georgia this weekend
Coach Ryan Smith said Saulsberry, who has added 12 pounds to his frame since Christmas break, has a tremendous upside.
“He’s a skinny 262,” Smith said. “He has a 69 inch wing span. He’s very agile, very athletic for a big guy. He’s going to be a great player. I think he can be a 290, 300 pound body and still be skinny. He’s just starting to fill out. He works extremely hard in the weight room.”
Saulsberry, who bench presses 315-pounds and power cleans 275, recorded 51 tackles and 4 sacks last year. He said he admires former South Florida defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul, who’s projected to be an early round pick in this year’s NFL Draft.
“He’s quick off the ball and has nice moves,” Saulsberry said. “He’s just an amazing athlete to me. “
Saulsberry, who reports his GPA being over a 3.0, hopes to be a pharmacist. He said he plans to graduate in December and enroll in college next January.
The scholarship offers and interest from some of the top schools in the nation has caught Saulsberry off guard.
“It’s surprising because I never thought I would be in this situation,” Saulsberry said. “If I look back at my ninth grade year, I didn’t see myself like this and having college coaches wanting me to call them and being recruited by their schools. It’s surprising and shocking. I’m just in awe; I’m taking it all in. You only go through it once.
Smith said he likes Saulberry’s character just as much as he like his talent on the field.
“He’s a super player but even a better kid.” Smith said. “He’s a very respectful kid.”
