not sure if it is a blessing or a lack of talent, but there is alot of experience on first and second teams. I think that it was lack of talent, but I feel like most will improve from last year.
I did not see David Gordon on the list?
Well, I don’t think naming Wingo the starter really says much,if anything, about how the RB depth chart stacks up. There is so much talent back there that you basically could have tossed a coin to name the starter. Wingo is good, but the same could be said of Davis, Johnson, Green, etc….
We will be fine whoever lines up for the first offensive snap on gameday.
lew
Now, Ronny, Work on chelton and get him here to nlock for you
Meant Shelton, as in Richardson
Dennis Johnson is the man that has earned that starting spot on the field. Its a shame its not reflected in the pre-spring lineup.
and you guys know that I think the world of Ronnie Wingo, but Dennis Johnson is the whole package.
It makes you wonder if deals are being cut to make sure players dont transfer elsewhere? I have no idea, what do you guys think??
I think Wingo is great, but yeah, I’m with you Peyton, I think Dennis J. is tough to beat!
I’ve heard that Dennis Johnson doesn’t want to practice hard, and we all know that Petrino wants players to practice like they play and will reward that behavior.
tomt – I believe David Gordon’s late injury required surgery and that he was not supposed to participate in spring drills
DJ ran over people last year. He looked very difficult to tackle.
Unfortunately, DJ doesn’t do one thing….Pass block. That’s pretty important.
There is no way deals are being struck for playing time. those coaches would not put their careers on the line for deal making. they see these players all off season and can judge them better than we can.
Daniel,
Thank you.
DJ seams to do good in big games. He has some really good runs, but I think there are times he looks for the big run and they are not there.
Peyton, I may be naive, but I think CBP wants things done his way. I think he cares about his players off the field. Greg Childs is a good example. When it comes to the field I believe he is a very cut and dry person. I don’t believe he has time for the nonsense. My opinion is no deals on the field.
Daniel,
just went back to depth chart. It still has two other players on the depth chart that are injured Ryan Mallett and T Wright.
Dennis Johnson should be starting. We need to go by the actual game results, not practice. Dennis is a proven running back and runs hard and difficult to stop in “actual games” not practice. He has nothing to prove to me.
Believe David Gordon’s injury was a liz franc fracture (break in bone(s) in top of foot. Never heard talk of the severity, if not treated properly can be lifelong problem.
When we faced the toughest rushing defenses in the nation, Dennis Johnson was the one who racked up the most yardage. He has nothing to prove to me either.
Now Tom, I’m not sure what sort of “nonsense” you are referring to about Dennis, but you better be damn sure of your facts before you go dragging names through the mud.

I believe they were starters at the end of last year.
I did hear that David Gordon’s injury was more severe than originally expected and that he might red shirt next year. That was a might and was mentioned by Trey Biddy.
Peyton,
You asked people what they though. I answered you with my opinion. 1st know where did I claim any facts. Second I made a comment about DJ running style, then I started another paragraph, which means I am changing subjects. I don’t think CBP puts up with any nonsense. I am not referring to anyone or anything.
I responded to your questions for discussion, not for you to get your panties in a wad. There are a lot of comments made with no facts behind them. Are you now the police of this web site.
i have no idea where ppl are coming up with Johnson having practice issues. not true. Petrino said himself it is about DJ needing to deal with injuries and fighting through things better
Yeah I listened to Petrino’s take tonight. Sounds like he was kind of harsh on Dennis Johnson because he doesnt think he fights through the pain of injuries enough.
If your the man on Saturday I could care less what you do through the week.
It makes you wonder if deals are being cut to make sure players dont transfer elsewhere? I have no idea, what do you guys think??

You have absolutely got to be kidding. Did you actually post your opinion that CBP is cutting deals with players for depth chart placement? I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt, and assume that you had WAY too much green beer earlier.
Depth charts don’t mean squat this time of the year. The player that proves himself in spring and fall practice will EARN the starting position. A lot of the times, depth charts can be used as a motivational factor. All of our backs are good and will be used at different times. We don’t need to get our panties in a wad about who we think should be listed as #1. CBP knows what he is doing. There may be a freshman that isn’t in school yet that may surprise us and earn a starting position (i.e.: Big Tex). Come on guys, trust our coaches!

and that has to do with practicing through pain. Apparently, DJ doesn’t.

Couldn’t have said it better myself.
I think the roster is like it is to provide some motivation to some of the players who will probably start next season, but still need to work hard to reach full potential.
As for Dennis, I know for a fact that CBP had issues with his work ethic last spring. He also had a few issues with his pass blocking, but that seemed to improve as the season progressed. I think Dennis will be a top the rotation after spring ball, but he is not entitled to it. I think he has been the most productive at gaining yards in game situations, but he has room to improve like everyone else this spring. If you are not getting better, you are getting worse. I think the same goes for guys like DD jones, Ford among others not at the top of the list.
My biggest question is with the status of David Gordon. I hope there is a reason he was not listed on the depth chart. I hope its not because of an injury that was worse than originally thought.
CBP said they may have to redshirt Gordon this year due to he has not recovered from the injury he sustained last year.
Why is it everything has to be a drama-filled epic with you Peyton?
My theory is that you just love stirring the pot, just to see what kind of a reaction you can summon up from others.
Right about the same time MRPRFCT and I set aside our year long past differences, you and a couple of others kicked the BS into high gear.
What’s the matter, not enough drama?
Anyone that knows enough about the game of football can tell you that effort, desire and dedication are what’s most important to a great head coach.
Last years big game performances by Dennis mean nothing at this point if greater effort in the off-season is being produced by someone else.
No one knows for sure outside of the coaches and players what’s truly being evaluated for the spring depthchart.
For someone to actually suggest that deals might have been struck between CBP and a few select players, just because they’re wondering why their personal preferred choices aren’t #1 on the depthchart is supero el loco.
If you play for CBP you WILL compete for your position.
Gonz, he must have been drunk from St. Patrick’s Day to post that (I’m thinking drugs, too). That was the most idiotic post that I believe I have read on this site.
Lol. I knew it would get a reaction and I was not disappointed. No I was not drunk on the irish good stuff.
Spring depth charts are not that important, which is why offering Wingo the top job on a chart that doesnt mean much before spring workouts is an attractive idea. Wingo IMO is a special talent and should be #2, right behind Dennis Johnson.
It doesnt take a genius to see the depth we have at running back and how few carries everyone got last year. DeAnthony Curtis even got moved to wideout. This could easily be a move by Petrino to reassure Ronnie that he is going to play an important role at Arkansas, if it is, it is a crafty move, not a stupid one.
But in the end, Dennis Johnson may very well win the starting job back after the spring, because we all know he is the one that has proved it all in the games that really matter.
Guy’s I agree with Peyton, DJ is the man that proved it on the field
running over the Gators. He is the toughest SOB in the backfield
bar none. He always starts the spring in 2-3 place and turns it
on in the fall. We have a great stable of backs, and see alot of
potential out of ALL OF THEM. Go Hogs!
I’m not buying it. I think you made a serious post and are eembarrassed for it and are scrambling to cover. Good luck with that.
*embarrassed*
I think the depth chart is certainly used as a motivational tool, and yes it is just the pre-spring depth chart and a lot of changes will happen before fall.
But I like to think with the type of business approach that Petrino takes that kids that worked the hardest according to Valtkamp in the offseason are being rewarded.
I don’t think Petrino just blindly puts names on the list in any certain order. In the case of Wingo being on top we all felt he would rise to the top when we signed him last year so this should be a good sign.
At the same time I am sure Petrino is putting Johnson at the bottom (even though the and/or on the list tell you he feels that all 4 RBs are solid) to see if he can spark something in DJ.
*Veltkamp
Three thoughts: 1] We are no younger extremely young. 2] We have much more depth than in previous years, although in coming years I expect the depth to improve. 3] We have no GAPING holes, although our talent at some positions could of course be better.
We’re going to compete at a high level next year.
As for spring, I’m mainly concerned to see how the secondary does, whether there will be much movement on the d-line depth chart, and then whether there will be any surprises amongst our redshirt freshmen or sophomores.
Something that also excites me from the Depth chart is our CB and S battles that look like they are going to take place.
I like both names listed on both S spots and I think that those guys are going to have really good competition on their hands.
Really when you look at the depth chart closely we have quality depth at WR, OL, RB, DE, DT, LB, CB, and S.
The only spots I personally do not like the depth is on special teams, and we have great talent coming in with this signing class this summer that will help push the depth in those areas.
We also have talented players coming in that will push the depth at WR, TE, DL, OL, CB, S and like I just said the special teams positions.
I am getting more excited every time I look down the list.
David Gordon will run around and practice some Petrino said, but his injury was a serious one. Petrino said he will not have any contact, and I assume that is why the held him off the depth chart. If he can go 100% he will probably fight his way back on the chart, but if he is not a full 100% with all the upperclassmen such as Broadway, Stewart, Cim, and Madison that are on that CB depth chart he will likely be redshirted so they can bring him along another year.
We already have one young star CB that will have to try and fight through those upperclassmen to earn a spot in Winston.
i did make a serious post to get a reaction on what people think about Dennis Johnson not being #1. That is the biggest news about this depth chart, so it seems pretty appropriate to discuss it IMO.
I think that just like last year that Petrino will use all of these RBs.
He may want to have a clear #1, but we will have to wait and see if he takes that approach this year.
like in the liberty bowl the announcers were all wondering aloud why BG wasn’t starting at tailback because that’s where he was listed. At the end of the day, it matters what kind of run you need with which back you put in. All 4 backs can get the job done in one way or another. If you want a sweep to the outside, RW. A gun up the middle, BG. an off-tackle, LB-plowing stunt, DJ, etc.
Yeah! Sell that, Peyton.
randy are you lucid? What are you even talking about? Your lame attempts to derail everything i say with snide comments are hilarious to me. At least you are trying buddy.
Lucid enough to call you FOS on your above post. Does that work out for you?
Here is a thought…….It’s a Spring Depth Chart. That’s all it is. Maybe it is used to motivate a few players. Maybe it is used to have some starting point. But we all know that when the season starts, performance is what will matter. Let’s take a step back and calm down about who is or is not listed as a starter.
Our running backs will change depending on the defense we are going against, what down it is, and how much yardage to the first down marker. We are loaded at the running back spot, and I just don’t see one back getting 15-20 carries a game. Petrino knows how to spread the wealth…”feed the studs” if you will. DJ will get carries. Broderick will get the ball in short yardage situations. I just expect Knile and Ronnie to kind of run the show.
You said it Blake. I’m interested most in the secondary competition. We should be miles ahead of where we were last year.
I don’t care which back is featured, we must block better up front for any of them to be effective. Coach Klenakis may hold the key to our success next year. An effective run game keeps our defense on the sidelines, and a defense never gives up yards or points when it isn’t on the field.
Broderick Green did improve our ability to get the first down in short yardage situations, but it was largely due to improved blocking up front. They opened up big holes sometimes for him to get into the end zone.
Now I am enlightened! Wow!
Randy, you should find a girlfriend to stalk. Your fascination with me at first was somewhat flattering but it is beginning to grow disturbing now.
Constant drivel.
I agree that each back is unique and can do different things, but what I think the coaches need to work diligently on this spring is make each of them better all around backs.
Having Wingo classified as our sideline to sideline back, or Green as the up the middle back is making it a little too easy for defenses. While each has their specialties we need defenses to be concerned about all of our backs slamming it up the middle, or kicking it outside, or countering, etc etc.
I think with coach K bringing in more of the “shot” formation as Petrino calls it we will be able to do a lot more things with our running game. The proof is in the results and so that is what I want to see this spring.
I also think it is flying under the radar a bit, but I want to see Tyler Wilson be that guy he says he is going to be. I want to also see Walker and Mitchell compete with him and push him.
Wilson talked the talk nicely yesterday and I agree that it is his team this spring and if the spring is not as productive as we all would like I am going to put a lot of that blame on him. But on the flip side of things if the team is very productive this spring I am going to see that as a strong indicator of what kind of leader and quarterback we are in store for when Mallett leaves and will give Tyler praise for that.
So there are a lot of keys to look for: Defensive competition and improvement, secondary battles, improved offensive line blocking (great competition here by the way with the Berna’s, Baileys, Odens, Thomas’, etc.), Running game improvement, quarterback backup development, redshirt freshman/sophmore/or other impact surprises like Childs was last year, and overall the team taking a big step in the direction of being a contender for championships like they all mentioned yesterday is the goal and the expectations they want.
Look we are going to be ranked around 15th in the nation to start the year. That is freaking huge! It has been a little while guys since we started the year as a contender and nationally recognized. The Hogs need to seize this moment and move the program in the direction we all want it to be. This is the year to do it, and that makes this spring the most important spring we have had in quite some time.
It needs to be all out all the time, and we need to see results. Anybody planning on attending a number of the practices and scrimmages?
Speaking of girlfriends, where is your “partner” this morning?
I will be disappointed if going into the final weeks of the season we are not in serious contention for a BCS bowl game.
I can understand if we just miss out on one because they are limited, but the Hogs need to be in the serious running to make a BCS game this year and if they absolutely have to get knocked down to another elite bowl game just outside of the BCS it needs to come down to the end of the season in my mind.
We need the Hogs to be hyped all year. We need Mallett to be all over the major networks being hyped as a Heisman front runner. All of these things will get our fan base going crazy, recruits interest peaking in the Hogs, and our program rolling in the direction we all want.
Guys guys guys. I know this isn’t a major recruiting news piece or something that everyone typically gets all excited about, but there are really good things to discuss from this depth chart and the media conferences from yesterday rather than back and forth arguing.
If you have not watched the press conferences I strongly recommend that you do. It appears that we all have the time with the frequency of posts so have at it. Please.

I agree Blake this is a big chance for Wilson. He has been in CBP system going on 3 years now. If he chokes (which I think he will) his future as a Razorback will be holding a clip board and wasting a scholly. I’m really disappointed in Brandon Mitchell I know he had some tuff things happen to him this year (death in the family, injury) but it’s no excuss not to work hard. CBP said his teammates gave him the nickname “fatty” I hope he can turn it around.
Totally unrelated but I wish the hogs were in the OKC NCAA regional. My Bricktown Marriott has been invaded by an army of Jayhawk fans. I’ve tried talking to them and come to the conclusion they are all pricks!!!
Predicting that a player will choke. That is impressive. It’s “so called” fans like you that disgust me. Why don’t you go buy yourself a ‘bama hat. Or maybe lsu. You stink up this board with comments like you made above. Love ‘em or leave ‘em. I hope you choose the latter.
I am looking for Lavunce Askew to have a BREAK OUT YEAR… starting in the spring. And yes we do have depth now…and more coming in the fall. Also, I HOPE Darius Winston has a break out spring and is the starter at CB when games start in the fall. He has the talent.
Petrino mentioned Askew as one of those players that really made strides during the offseason. It is time for him to break out Roger.
Petrino talked about him yesterday. He is one of 6 players on the D to push over 400 lbs on the bench press.
We also had six offensive players push that weight with Cook and Bailey being two of them.
Also Knile Davis as a running back was mentioned as being right there with those guys pushing some serious weight also.
We have some beasts and some speedsters and the blood is really starting to get pumping the closer we get to spring starting. I can’t wait.
Petrino also mentioned Jake Bequette, and how hard he is working…He could wind up being all SEC…
They said Jake Bequette is so fast he is working out with linebackers! WPS. After Jake’s Florida game last year, I look forward to some more good stuff. Hopefully he can keep DD Jones inspired.
Whoever said they expected Tyler Wilson to choke is even more of a douchebag than Randy. That was just uncalled for. I expect Tyler to shine, as we know he can.
DJ not starting has nothing to with anything other than DJ’s practice habits. Trust me, I as his cousin am telling you this.
I think wingo is the starter for the spring is because he worked the hardest the winter quarter. And petrino rewards hard workers as you could see at the end of this past season. If you work hard you start. Point blank. The spring practices are just for evaluation and recruiting purposes. It shows the weakness of the offense and defense. CBP and his staff will work on fixing those weakness. As for starters, there are not sure starters.
As far as when the season start we will be a top 25 team. We will compete with alabama for the sec west division title. LSU won’t be a factor even with all the talent they have. Miles can’t coach a lick. He has talent day in and day out to compete with the best but he does know how to use it. Auburn. We will beat them. Malzahn offense is too flashy and not enough head to head like most of the teams. Ole Miss is going the drain thanks to the nut. Mississippi state will be improved but with their running back moving on I don’t think they will be a major factor in beating us. My high hopes are a 10+ win season but I will happily take a nine win season. Rome wasn’t built in a day. And I don’t expect for us challenge for a national championship even though that would be awesome.

I mean does not know how to use it.
It will start with our defense, if we have one,we win 10 plus games.
WE know we will have a great offense. I think we will have a 10-11
win season, I’m in homer heaven. BP seems to think he can compete
for the Championship, I believe him.
Alot of people out there claim that Wingo likes to “dance around” in the pocket…The way our coaches describe this is using his vision, while keeping his legs driving. When you have the speed Wingo has, it is not always wise to go full speed into the line of scrimmage. Sometimes you have to let the play develop a little, and find a hole. Wingo will not be a feature back, but he will be the main guy this year. All the doubters will just have to get the popcorn ready….
No one is saying he “dances around in the pocket”. Isn’t the pocket where the QB passes from? The problem with Wingo last year is that he didn’t hit the hole hard and tried to bounce the the play out too many times. I’m sure he did that with great success at the high school level, but you can’t do that at this level. He should talk to Cedric Cobbs about that.
I remember when Cobbs sustained that serious shoulder seperation way back in his Soph. year. (2000 season)
That’s exactly what he was doing. Trying to bounce it outside once again against a very fast and physical Alabama defense.
Totally reminded me of Cobbs last year MrP. I liked the way Davis hit the holes last year. He seemed to really attack the LOS.
I’m pretty bummed right now…I had several of last season’s games (and a few of the Hog classics)recorded to my DVR which died a few days ago. Those were supposed to get me to next season…:(
