UAPB, if they can get by Winthrop tonight (and it won’t be easy – Winthrop is a tournament-tested team), can burn their names into the NCAA tournament history books forever by beating Duke in their next game. Never has a 16th seed ever beaten a #1 seed in NCAA tournament history. This could be the greatest athletic victory in Arkansas’ sports history – I only pray they get a shot at this once in a life time opportunity and realize just what is now so very close, reach out and grab that golden ring.
If they win then Arkansas and the whole nation will be talking about this victory for the rest of our lives and the rest of theirs as well. Their grandkids will ask them over and over to tell them again about the time they beat Duke. Even after they have passed away and are being eulogized at their funerals the preacher will have to mention again that they had played on the UAPB team who were the only 16th seed to ever beat a #1 seed because I don’t think it will ever be done again.
Believe me folks this can really be BIG and I know UAPB can do it. They have taken the spears and arrows on the road and have become battle-tested. These hard knocks were not in vain though because they have become tough and they have learned how to overcome adversity. This team has earned it, their school deserves it, our state needs it, and maybe this great victory might some how atone for this miserable basketball season.
A victory could transform this season into the greatest year ever in the history of Arkansas basketball (many teams have won National Championships but not one 16th seed – not one – has ever beaten a #1 seed) and I for one (and perhaps for many) believe this road-tested team can do it and that’s where all great victories begin – in your heart. THEY CAN AND THEY WILL WIN, I KNOW IT; I KNOW IT IN MY HEART!
And monkeys might fly outta my butt…
Seriously, it won’t happen. But if it did it still won’t compare to a NC year. It would be great for UAPB and no doubt be their greatest victory ever. But you can say the same thing about tonight’s game.
A 16th seed has never beaten a #1 seed ever. That is BIG!!!!!
It’s gonna be a tough second half. Just imagine if they had converted those 2 dunks and at least 2 layups?
Just win baby!!!!
UAPB looking pretty good — their defense is something other certain schools could learn from
33-27 UAPB
Washington made a tough layup
come on peyton everyone knows your talking about ualr, lol
yep
UAPB starting to dominate! 45-36
47-36. UAPB sends the entire team to crash the defensive boards…. well coached.
UAPB only had 9 home games this season and won 17 games.
and they played som very good teams.
I’m just saying!!!!!
Stick a fork in em! They’re done!
Way to go Lions! You’ve done the state proud!
impressive win UAPB, nice job, amazing defense. i have to watch the Duke game just because I wouldn’t want to miss the slight chance of the greatest upset in the history of basketball.
Congrats Lions. Were all behind you. Beat Duke
Go Golden Lions!! I still don’t know how you get the play in team if you’re not the number 1 overall seed?
That’s a good question, me either; maybe it’s destiny. However, I can’t think of a better #1 seed to beat than the Dukies though!!!!!
cool…defense…I had forgotten what it looked like.
UAPB actually plays defense and rebounds…take notes HOGS!
A blast from the glorious past…

that was a great shot
that got me watching some of those clips from the ’90′s, we sure were awesome. We just had different players then, they looked like men on the floor not boys.
And they knew how to win a ball game in spite of adversity and bad breaks…
I did the same thing. Stayed up way to late last night looking at those. One of my favorites is the game against UNC in the 90 tourney. I think that was THE game that let everyone know that the Hogs had arrived and showed us what was to come.
Not wanting to change the subject but wait a minute for this.
I am so pissed I can’t believe it! I was just looking at the seedings and the two pathetic ACC teams (Wake Forest and Georgia Tech that got in the tournament over Mississippi State, Arizona State and believe it or not Virginia Tech) make me so mad I had to do some research. The selection committee is corrupt (maybe just plain stupid but I doubt it) and I think I can prove it. They use certain types of criteria one year and then all of a sudden change when another type of criteria is more “useful” for them to get “their” undeserving favorites in.
Just look at what little Georgia Tech did in the regular season:
Geo. Tech had no non conference away games victories except Pomeroy power rated # 251 Chattanooga and # 103 Charloette which they won, of course, while they lost to # 82 Georgia (away) and to # 45 Dayton on a neutral court. The only teams they beat (and I mean only) under a power ranking of 50 was Duke, Maryland and Clemson and they were squeakers.
Now can someone please tell me how Pomeroy (a ranking system I used to respect but not any more) got them a power rating of # 27 with out using the “garbage in – garbage out” method. Okay, wait they did beat Siena # 58 at their place (Atlanta).
___________________________________________________________
Now here’s Wake Forest # 50 and I think their power rating is still way too low also:
Wake Forest did play two tough away games: Purdue which they lost and Gonzaga which they squeaked by with a two point “blow out” ( I wonder if the ACC still brings their refs with them on their away games). Their other two away games were to # 221 “North Carolina” Wilmington and # 249 “North Carolina” Greensboro (you see kind of an “in-state” pattern here – ya think). Oh yeah, they lost to William & Mary @ Winston – Salem. Oh wait, they lost their 1st game in the ACC tournament to # 46 Miami by 21 points.
___________________________________________________________
I am not going to go into Virginia Tech, Arizona State or Mississippi States’ records but take my word for it they are a lot better teams than Wake or Tech and if you don’t believe me look them up. I know what you’re thinking, “What difference does it make?” The difference this time is that I think that MSU had a chance to win it all and that is exactly what conference tournaments and the big dance is all about (isn’t it). These idiots, who say they work so hard to accomplish this, are doing such a piss poor job – Heck, we could hire grade school kids and just give them crayons and pay them milk and cookies and they could do a better and fairer job then these conference butt-boys have.
______________________________________________________________
By the way # 42 Arizona State went 22-10 (12-6) while # 31 Virgina Tech was 23-8 (10-6) and I think the only reason Virginia Tech was left out was so the ACC could say well if you think you got screwed Mr. PAC 10 and Mr. SEC just look at our poor pitiful # 32 power rated 23-8 (10-6) Virginia Tech but in reality it was just a 2 for 1 swap.
I’ll close by saying that MSU was 23-11 (9-7) where they lost in the SEC tournament finals to the # 1 seeded Kentucky Wildcats in OT by 1 point.
Oh, and MSU power ranking was # 41.
Congratulations UAPB! I’ve always hated this play-in game. I think the tournament could have added an extra automatic qualifier and just reduced one at-large bid to keep the number at 64. The winner of the play-in game has the dubious distinction of having won a “tournament” game without making it past the true 1st round of the tournament. UAPB should have just been given a #16 seed (or whatever) and allowed to play in the 1st round. What are there, 20 automatic conference tournament (or championship in the case of the Ivy League) bids? Do we really think the 34th at-large team has a chance at winning the tournament? Anyway, congratulations UAPB for beating the system and earning your place in the 1st round. Good luck against Duke!
I agree, wyohog. The NCAA can call the play-in game a tournament game but they aren’t fooling anyone. They need to go back to 64 teams and drop an at large. If they can’t do that, then make the play-in game between the last two at large teams and the winner is a 13 seed.
You can tell UAPB is not the most talented team, but they are well coached, coachable players that hustle back to get on defense, they all crash the boards — thats why they are in the NCAA tournament.
Richard, how can UAPB play Duke? Any bracket that I have ever seen the lst seed would play the 64th seed. I assume Kansas is the no. 1 seed and not Duke. Or did they change it this year so Duke could play the no. 64th seed? It has been so obvious over the years the bias shown toward the ACC. I can’t argue that the Big East is not the best group. I thought that Mississippi State got screwed but so did a few other teams.

our current team could look a little more like men if they all grew mutton-chop sideburns
Our great teams of the past sure did look like men. That is something I have always talked about with people over the years.
Our players now look so much more like young kids, but I think they will look different in 2010.
Has anybody heard anything about Sanchez recently?
I am wondering if he is going to make it back.
Congrats UAPB!!! I saw a team that worked hard on defense and rebounded. They are not a talented team, but a good coach and a system can help any team overachieve.
Yeah I felt for UAPB having to play in the play-in game.
They overcome starting 0-11, they make a glorious run through their conference play and conference tournament, they earn their conferences automatic bid just to be told not so fast…if you really want to be in the tournament win this game.
They got it done, and now they have the opportunity to play Duke and shock the world. Obviously not likely, but this is what dreams are made of for young kids playing basketball at the SWAC level.
No teams that win their conferences automatic big should have to play the play in game in my opinion. Like many of you said before it just needs to either be eliminated or used for the final at large teams.
They could even do something more exciting and have a tournament within a tournament that could vary from year to year.
This year for example teams like Va Tech, Miss State, and others got screwed over in many peoples opinions, and less deserving teams like Illinois, GA Tech, and WF made it in.
They could have a little mini 8 team, 6 team, or 4 team tournament consisting of the most deserving of those “bubble” teams and let the final at large bids be decided on the court and not by “unbiased” board members who are lobbying for their favorites and overlooking who the most deserving bubble teams are on a yearly basis.
They never get it right so let it play out on the court.
It sounds to many like the tournament is going to be expanding to a larger format soon anyways, but this idea is something they could easily do to add some excitement to who gets the final at large bids and add to the March Madness madness.
big gip nice…love me some Dungeon Family. I listen to them on a daily basis.
Anyways back to what you and many people have said about UAPB. They are definitely not the best team.
And while everyone keeps saying they are well coached I think we all saw that offensively they just passed the ball around the perimeter until someone decided to try and drive.
It was the defensive end where they crashed the boards, were aggresive going for blocks, and showed tremendous heart.
I agree you have to give credit to the coach, but I personally think a lot of that has to do with the addrenaline and magnitude of being in the NCAA tournament and just kicking it in high gear and playing your hearts out.
What they showed me the most was toughness. I could see that they were playing some down south tough basketball. There was trash talk, they were definitely playing “hard”, and Arkansas basketball has that.
My years of competitive basketball came from 1988-2000. It was my first true love, and I was lucky enough to play it locally, regionally, and nationally with some great teams and players. Some that I still get to watch today in the NBA.
I can’t speak for now, but during that time basketball in Arkansas was tough. Away from competitive basketball and gyms I spent a lot of time playing at Kanis, Brady Elementary’s back field court behind the post office, or Interstate park, and things got out of hand a lot, but when the games were being played it was some great tough basketball.
There was always a strong sub-culture of basketball in the state. I have been away for quite some time but like many of you know I frequent my home town for games every year. Those courts I still see some games on from time to time, but many times I see the courts empty.
Damn just talking about it got my blood pumping and memories churning in my head.
Interstate park between 8th and 9th grade is where I first dunked a basketball.
Kanis park in 10th grade is where I routinely showed out as the little white guy that could jump over someone. Kanis is also where I slit my forearm open about 4 inches past the wrist dunking on one of those nasty rims.
Man I wish I was still young and could fly. It was so much fun.
Anybody still take part in any good games at those courts?
Or Thrasher, Billy Mitchell, etc, ?
Go Lions from Chicago. I wish this paper would show more support. Where the Hogs? Ooops. I have said too much.
Blake, how tall are you?
I know the Hawgs tested in the 40 does anyone know who the top preformers were?
Blake,
I know what you mean. I’m 6’4″ and could easily dunk in high school. I tried showing off for my two oldest daughters the other day and even after a half court full sprint, I barely got over half way up the net. Being a middle age working stiff has taken over for the workouts and pickup games. Ahh, those were the days!!!
Tyler I am only 6 ft. (With my shoes on)
I was only 5 10 the first time.
I measure like 5 11 3/4 barefoot.
My problem is ankle fractures and tears. I still play and shoot it around, and thank the lord I have not had an injury in quite some time to either foot.
In 2004 when I had the last one from a game I was playing at streetball tournament I walked on it for about 3 weeks then finally said F this I need to see a doctor because it was costing me money in my golf game and a lot of pain.
The doctor took a look at it, and then looked at the other because I said it had been hurt similarly maybe a few months prior. He found like 4-6 old fractures in both feet and serious ligament damage.
He pretty much told me one more pop, roll, or twist of either ankle and I would completely pop the tendon and need surgery.
Ever since the last few I just can’t jump like I use to be able to. I can still grab the rim and all that, but man I use to be able to jump.
I think half of it is physical with the injuries I overlooked and ignored as a dumb kid thinking I was tough and playing through everything like it was minor when really some were major.
And the other being mental. I actually dunked the ball in that last pickup game AFTER hurting my ankle the last time. Then after I finally went to the doctor because of the pain and swelling three weeks later I have never dunked since. I think what he said about surgery has gotten in my head and is holding me back.
Hey maybe someday I will have the money to fix them anyways, because there is still pain especially after say 72 holes of golf or really cold weather or a really good run/workout.
Then I could probably do it easily again, because I am in far better shape now than I was then.
Hog in OKC my daughter is only about to be 3 in May, but she loves to watch me play sports, and I try to show out too.
If only she could have seen me when I was at my prime. But hey we have pictures and videos for all of that.
One of these days our kids are all going to show us how it is done. For some of us I know that is probably now already.
Honestly I can’t wait. My daughter has a great golf swing already, but I have this feeling she is going to excel at basketball or skiing. She constantly wants to do those two.
Anyone with a Rivals account will you please tell the board who some of the 40 times the Hawgs ran yesterday. Trey Biddy has a post about it on the message board.
Ramon Broadway ran a 4.28. Wingo ran 4.30-something.
PeytonHillisFTW, Thx
No question Wingo has an amazing combo of size and speed. I hope he has/will improved on his RB skills as well. I hope Dennis Johnson can improve on his pass blocking so he can become more of a weapon. Does anyone know if “Tank” Wright will miss spring ball?
Arkansasrazorbacks.com has the media conference with Petrino up and the Roster and depth chart.
Looking at the 40 times that some of the Hogs ran handheld it looks like some of these guys really have gotten faster.
Childs has a 4.37 next to his name. Can you say What What?
If Childs can run a 4.37 – 4.41 at 6’3 220 and if he improves from an a very impressive Soph. season he`ll be considered of top prospect for the draft.
Ramon Broadway – 4.28
Lance Ray – 4.30
Jarius Wright – 4.35
Ronnie Wingo – 4.36
Darius Winston – 4.37
Knile Davis – 4.37
Greg Childs 4.37
Cobi Hamilton – 4.4
Rudell Crim – 4.49
D.J. Williams – 4.5
I’m most excited about Knile Davis – 4.37! Oustide of Dennis Johnson, Davis looks to be the the most naturally gifted RB.
SPEED, BABY, SPEED! Now that’s what I’ve been talking about!
Holy shit!! we have 7 guys sub 4.4 that’s impressive…
You can’t coach speed…Or size…Some of those boys are pretty big to be running like that…Sounds like Wingo is the man though…Petrino loves this guy.
Wingo is listed #1 on the depth chart. Petrino has a lot of or or or.
But he has Wingo up top. Davis next. Green third. And Johnson last.
Petrino even talked about Hamilton being a surprise to him that he is so good at running track and the 200 meters because he said he has a slow start and is not even close to being the best 40 speed runner on the team as the list shows you.
Broadway and Crim are listed as our #1 CB and among those fastest players on the team.
I think those two have been putting in some serious work during the offseason and it sounds like Petrino truly is impressed with our players hard work.
I personally think Petrino is all about the business and a straight shooter. If he is impressed with the players offseason progress I think we all have a lot to be excited about.
Without a doubt we have some guys that can flat out motor, but we need performance out of them to go along with that speed.
I watched Ramon Broadway quite a bit in high school when he was at Evangel and he was always one of the best athletes on the field and very explosive when he had he football, but he also made great breaks on the football at DB. I feel he could be a shut down corner for us if he quits gambling as much as he does. I think he has learned that he can’t do that in the SEC and will not have the fire department on standby as much as he did last year for getting burned when he bit on the ball fake and got beat deep. Also, he has that extra year of being able to read a QB at this level and read the WR and get a jump on that hitch pattern. He has already become very good at blowing up the WR screen on his side so that should be a strength for him and force the opposing QB to have to try to beat him deep and, like I said, if he has learned to not bite on that first move or ball fake, he has the speed to run with the WR and beat him to the football.
Rudell Crim has good speed and he also brings a little nastiness with him when he gets to the football. He is going to make some WR’s not want to catch the football and that in and of itself can be as good as good coverage at times. A WR that is not committed to the football and starts short arming his catches is useless and that is the way we want them!
Cobi Hamilton really came along toward the end of last season and is going to be a major weapon for us in our deep game this year. With Wright, Adams and Childs running the short to intermediate routes, Hamilton is going to torch some people downfield. I really like this team and really believe we are going to make some noise this season. WPS!!!
lew
guys im surprised DJ Williams is that fast! he doesnt look like it when he is trucking over defenders on the field
