wow just hilarious. how can someone claim something is a fact when the individual in question says it never was? is clarke being called a liar?

  2. beasley beasley says:

thats the way it sounds Blake,he just got caught fudgeing a story.

  3. UPDATE (10:59 p.m.): KNWA’s executive sports producer, Jason Carroll, responded to Clarke’s statement via Twitter Monday night.

Amazing how things can get spun to look good for the university. Sources on Clarke are very strong. Let the spin job continue ”

UPDATE (11:26 p.m.): KNWA sports reporter Pat Doney, who reported through anonymous sources that Clarke was considering a transfer, also joined the fray Monday night.

Biggest surprise of the night: the U of A wanting it to look like Rotnei WASN’T considering transfer. Oh wait, that’s not shocking at all.

  4. Captain Reality Captain Reality says:

Well, someone is “stretching” the truth. Is it the basketball player who has been reputed to be a paragon of virtue or someone “breaking” the big story???????

  5. I dont think Rotnei lied, thats not in his character. If you pay attention, he chose his words carefully so as not to be caught in a direct lie.

I do believe this administration obviously doesnt want news spreading around that players are considering transferring, because that looks bad for any program, but especially for John Pelphrey’s program.

If there was no truth to it, WHY DID JOHN PELPHREY REFUSE TO ANSWER Brandon Marcello’s question about Rotnei transferring on Saturday night??

Anyways, aside from all the drama and apparent deception from this administration, glad to have you back Rotnei! Look forward to seeing great things from you next year.

  6. belpa zhog belpa zhog says:

I will take Rotnie Clarke’s word anytime over that of a sportcaster who wants to “break the news” without the benefit of a tape recording.
Also, John Pelphrey is right to refuse to answer Brandon Marcello without getting all the facts from Clarke. Brandon Marcello is not “entitled” to a response to his question. He may have the right to ask it, but Pel also has the right to refuse him.

  7. thats true belpa, but the timing of this is interesting, considering that it was not until AFTER Pel met with Rotnei that this announcement came out that he was staying.

  8. Hogfan in SWLA Hogfan in SWLA says:

And with one accord HOG NATION breathed a sigh of relief knowing one of their own had chosen to remain noble and true to the cause.

  9. BigHogFan BigHogFan says:

This kind of stuff goes on at every university across the nation right after the season’s end. Usually with bench players, but it sometimes happens with average players and starters too. So this is not that big of deal. Pat Dummy is just doing his job.

  10. Hawglaw Hawglaw says:

Everyone just has to realise that recruiting changes as often as a huming bird flaps its wings.

  11. Hawglaw Hawglaw says:

    oops wrong thread.

  12. dwp007 dwp007 says:

Let us get on with some recruiting news. Has anyone heard anything recently about Ricardo Ratcliffe? Combined with Clarke and his buddy, Powell, he would be a HUGE missing piece to the puzzle.

  13. Blake Blake says:

I would say that Pelphrey did not know if there was any truth to it because he had not spoken to Rot. That very well could be why Rot drove to Hot Springs to attend the state championships with Pel so he would know the truth.

And then they had their already scheduled meeting and talked about everything. Any competitor will be frustrated when you have a tough season like the Hogs did. But when Clarke says “it has never been my intention to transfer” I think it is fairly clear.

  14. Razorback Roger in Florida Razorback Roger in Florida says:

Heyyy…has anyone been able to substantiate the rumor that a 60 year old short, fat guy that can shoot the lights out is being recruited to play shooting guard at Arkansas. Seems that this guy is very talented and never went to college. He is talking to the coaches at Arkansas.
Reports are that he is in excellent shape and wants to play and the coaches want him to try out or walk on.

  15. tahoehog tahoehog says:

Glad Clarke is staying but no matter where the truth lies it’s just another suggestion, along with the coaching shuffle, that all is not well in Pel’s program… and this little drama won’t help in recruiting the premier players which Pel desperately needs to have any chance of keeping his job beyond 2011-2012.

  16. I heard that Pelphrey likes the 60 year old fat guys! (i kid, but you will notice that the only guy he fired on his staff was the young one that made the least salary)

  17. dwp007 dwp007 says:

Many thanks, Peyton. There was a post last night which said that Dudley D. was quoted as saying that Ratcliffe was canceling the remainder of his recruiting visits and would quite possibly be a Razorback – joining his friend, Powell.

It would outstanding to somehow get this very talented kid on board, though I haven’t seen anything else on it.

  18. Dudley Dawson was misguided when he said that according to Richard Davenport dwp. Go look at the recruiting tidbits thread.

Ratliffe intends to visit several other schools, including Alabama I believe, and he already lives in Florida, where he has probably taken numerous unofficial visits.

We must not fall into a positive groupthink circle @#$@# here, but we should feel decently good about Ratliffe only because of
    #1, Immediate playing time and
    #2, Marshawn Powell

Keep in mind though, Ratliffe does have other friends besides Marshawn Powell that play elsewhere.

  19. dwp007 dwp007 says:

Well said, Peyton, and I appreciate the reference. It sounds like we still have a decent shot at Ratcliffe, in reading some of Richard Davenport’s commentary. Man, this kid could be a force, from everything being said and written.

  20. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

PHFTW, get a clue. Ratliffe already visited Alabama. He went straight to Alabama after he left Fayetteville. You’re wanting so bad for Pelphrey to fail that you don’t even have the common knowledge of big-time recruits’ visits.

  21. cdavidson Richard Davenport says:

Like I said earlier, recruiting changes hour by hour and even minute by minute. I seriously doubt Dudley was misguided. Ricardo could change his mind and not take any visits.

    ===================
Mr. P, thanks for the vote of confidence. You appear to have your own view of my statements which are quite disconnected from reality. I have never said I want Pelphrey to fail, in fact i have said the complete opposite.

Secondly, I knew that Ratliffe was scheduled to visit Alabama after his Arkansas trip back to Florida but wasnt sure on the timeline.

I am surprised that you jump at twisting my words when you yourself have been the victim of many such attacks re: your statements on Bobby Petrino’s recruiting.

  24. Richard, I know that you wouldn’t speak ill of another recruiting guru and I respect that about you. I trust your text messages though.

  25. MC MC says:

Thanks RC for staying. Razorbacks need your leadership and character. Maybe Jeff Long needs to transfer. Got to wonder about his evaluation process. And who holds evalaution meetings on a Sunday.

  26. GonzoHog GonzoHog says:

I think we have a very good shot to land R. Ratliffe.
Juco players only have 2 seasons to make their mark, so with M. Washington leaving, Ratliffe knows he has a starting position just waiting for him at Arkansas. He also knows he would complete a very good recruiting class of versatile athletes.
He’s already played with M. Powell in high school. (only one class apart)
With the strength and versatility he brings inside, combind with M. Waith and an experienced M. Powell, and a very good group of guards to rotate next season, how could he not be very interested?

  27. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

Got to wonder how far from reality fans are when your team went thru a crazy coaching hire/resign/hire just three years ago after being turned down by multiple coaches and now they’re demanding a coach be fired. You got to think outside world thinks we are fools.

  28. MR P. I think you could be completely wrong regarding a lot of the outside world, if you ask regular people who are not blowhard ESPN commentators. Many probably think we are comfortable with mediocrity and hurting our recruiting for keeping him around so long.

    EVIDENCE DOCKET #1.

FROM AN OK STATE MESSAGE BOARD REGARDING ROTNEI TRANSFER:

    Re: Rotnei Clarke to Transfer?
    ————————–

That would be awesome if he came here, since he and Keiton are already friends. Finding a place for him on the roster might be challenging, but his experience would be a huge selling point.

IMO, he should have just come here in the first place. Some kids go play somewhere because the coach will convince them that they can start immediately and be a star. Unfortunately, being the ONLY star surrounded by mediocrity is often not what those kids were looking for.

Pelphrey was the shizz his first year at Arkansas. Not so much anymore.

  29. Besides Mr P, since when did you care so greatly about what the “outside world” thinks of whats going on in Arkansas anyways. Smacks of hypocrisy.

  30. Blake Blake says:

The outside world certainly does not think highly of many Razorback fans with the planes, hiring and firings, taking out ads in the newspaper, and so on.

If I am being completely honest I think that certain outlets of the media in Arkansas report more negatively than any other programs in states I have been around. It could be because Hog fans beg for the scoop so much. I don’t really know. But the places I have lived everywhere else always tries to keep things positive with their coaches and team, and just reports the bad things when they absolutely have to if ever.

I dunno I think some of you may know what I am trying to say here. Maybe not. Arkansas is its own little universe. Sometimes it is great, sometimes it makes you say WTH was that all about? We have had more cringing WTH are they thinking moments than most everyone else in our sports the past decade.

  31. GonzoHog GonzoHog says:

Give it up Peyton. Using an OSU board for evidence of what the “outside world” thinks about the UofA, is like asking one of your enemies to say good things about you.
What were they supposed to say? What are they supposed to know?

I’ve been to those boards before. OSU fans are like OU and Texas fans.
    They hate the SEC.
Did you read some of the retarded comments they made after they lost their prize DT recruit to the Hogs on NSD? Great reference.

  32. Blake Blake says:

Most of the bigger outside programs think Arkansas is nothing compared to them, and they down play the tradition Arkansas has.

OSU fans would likely tell you they have a better basketball and football tradition than Arkansas. I am almost positive of that.

  33. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

LOL using an Ok State grads opinion to back up your argument. Amazing.

  34. My point exactly Mr P, since when do you care about outside opinion. Hypocritical to say the least.

  35. I dont care whether you guys think OSU fans are objective or not. No fans are. That is still an “outside opinion.”

Now that you are throwing a hissy fit about this particular outsiders opinion, I dont want to see your garbage about being so worried about what different outsiders may hypothetically think of Arkansas fans who are impatient with Pelphrey.

    Point made.

  36. Yeah we are complete “fools” in your words Mr P, because we hate that the program is sinking to a new low even though it has been down over the past decade. You are the unreasonable one here.

You can stop demonizing the opposition now. How about come up with some legitimate arguments where you don’t have to stoop to name calling? Perhaps too difficult?

  37. Omaha Hog Omaha Hog says:

I think Jeff Peterson is going to be a nice contributor next year. Most people forget about him. I really hope we get Rat.

  38. Blake Blake says:

I think we need a commitment or some type of recruiting good news to get everyone on to new subjects.

Have any of you looked down the offers list at the large amount of top talent we have offered by Petrino and Co. so far for 2011?

The unfortunate thing is that we will miss out on a ton of them, but we are getting more interest from more highly regarded players right now. If many of them go the waiting until NSD route I think or chances increase as long as we have the big season we are all expecting.

It would also be awesome if we could get early commits out of Cook, Frazier, and the states top talent. That could open the flood gates.

On the basketball front it is all about Ratliffe right now. We need more stories about how Arkansas needs him out there.

The 2011 class like Richard and everyone has been saying for some time now Pelphrey has been working tirelessly on and he has done everything so far that he can do to give us the best opportunity to sign those talented in state players.

  39. Blake Blake says:

Omaha I agree. Peterson seems like a high IQ and talent player. He has been around the college game long enough to have very good experience. He has good size and he was a very good player for Iowa.

Hopefully he helps push the PG competition. I think much like Petrino something Pelphrey is going to benefit from with the new players coming in is an increase in competition.

Waithe, Scott, Wade, and hopefully Ratliffe all would push competition to a new level. When a player has to worry about losing his starting job, or better yet understands that he can go 100% all the time and when he is tired as a teammate that can come in and do the same job, and keep the rotation going you have yourself a team.

Last year and this year the Hogs did not have that. Pelphrey did work on gaining players experience and developing his bench this year. He tried to give Bryant, Johnson, and Nobles minutes that he felt they could handle or in situations they could learn and help the team. Unfortunately there were a number of situations where he had to use them when they were more of a liability. But he had no choice. You live and you learn.

I may just be being optimistic, but I have a gut feeling that the Hogs are going to make a major step forward next season. I thought they would be a little better this year and they appeared to be once they got Fortson back, but then the collapse happened.

It is tough being an Arkansas basketball fan, but my interest is never going to waiver. Who else would a root for?

    NOBODY!

  40. Matt Matt says:

Best thing to do is support our program. PH, I don’t agree with firing Pel, I see our program making huge strides over the coming year. I don’t know why you are bent on doom and destruction. Well, I was that same way when Frank fired Nolan, while everyone else strongly felt that our program would be in better shape without him, I knew our program would completely tank. I’m sure you were one of them. If you were, I know then that I’m right in my support of Pel and you are wrong.
This time next year, I will allow you back on the bandwagon. There won’t be any hard feelings, will there?
    Go Hogs!

  41. Razorback Roger in Florida Razorback Roger in Florida says:

Personally, I think those hootiee tootie “Big Programs” are a bunch of elite snobs. I haven’t watched them for year now. In fact, the basketball stuff is all they have got. Back then, John Thompson and his ilk got way overexposed and I left college basketball. While it is nice to be a fan, I think we sometimes over emphasize all these sports and forget the more important things in life.

  42. lol Matt, first of all, Mr. P twisted my discussion of ratliffe’s recruiting into another debate about Pelphrey.

obviously pelphrey is going to be here next year. Is that the right decision? No. but what i say wont change that fact.

Jeff Long has basically staked his job on keeping an unpopular coach, so they will both be held responsible for next year.

i dont even have to justify my support of the program to people like you who dont understand any complexities of support.

and you would do well to not make assumptions about where I stand on the firing of Nolan richardson.

  43. Blake Blake says:

    NOLAN was a SAINT!

*waiting to see what that starts*

  44. Blake Blake says:

    U Are Probably ____

I don’t think I would ever root for them in any official fashion, but I will certainly be on the edge of my seat screaming for them tonight.

  45. Blake Blake says:

That was supposed to be “official” fashion. Quote unquote.

  46. Matt Matt says:

PH, I like you. Just wanted to see what my jibberish would pull.

  47. dwp007 dwp007 says:

PEL needs one more year to flip this thing around. The past two years, with the 6 graduating seniors [and losing Beverly] combined with the early departures and suspensions of this season have been a complete aberration of many, many, years gone past.

Living out of State, I haven’t had an opportunity to catch but a few of the games. One of the consistent complaints about Pelphrey, however, seems to be that players don’t look at or listen to him and, seemingly, he does nothing about it. Well, it’s hard to get in a kid’s face and pull him off the court, when you have little or no depth backing him up.

I really expect next year to be totally different. If it in indeed has been a problem, Pel should be able to quickly regain and take control of this team. With the incoming recruits and Peterson kid, when a player doesn’t follow instructions, he will hopefully get some extended pine time – starting with Courtney Fortson.

It’s great news to have Rot back and I would love to see Ratcliffe in the mix.

  48. glad to hear it Matt, sometimes I think its just me and Hogendazs here

  49. GonzoHog GonzoHog says:

I like you too Peyton. Your always good for a laugh or two.

  50. GonzoHog GonzoHog says:

Does calling someone a “biatch” classify as name calling, or is that just something the priveledged get away with?

  51. Blake Blake says:

Hey enough with the love connection…back to fighting. Biatches

  52. I still stand by that statement Gonzo, until you retract your statements that are damaging to the reputation of the entire state of Arkansas.

  53. Aaron H Aaron H says:

So glad Rotnei is coming back!

I don’t care what the OSU fans think about Arkansas or where Rotnei should be. Nevertheless, I do care about the tone Arkansas fans set because that does affect our recruiting. I like Coach Pel and hope he ends up being successful here at Arkansas, and I will support him until he is no longer the coach. The point at which he moves on, I will cease to support him and will be positive about the next coach.

I think we would be better off if we would ease up on the negativity, especially on a recruiting board.

  54. Aaron I think the best thing is to stop talking about basketball altogether and focus on what Arkansas is excited about —> Petrino and Arkansas football 2010!!!

  55. Pork Chop Pork Chop says:

Have you guys nothing better to do with your time than talk about a non story? Throw a frisbee.

  56. your mom goes to college your mom goes to college says:

For those of you who can listen to Bo’s show, Rotnei’s dad is scheduled to be a guest tomorrow.

  57. BigHogFan BigHogFan says:

It is a good thing Rot is coming back, but I see his minutes dropping next year…Along with Fortson’s…I’m sure Rot has taken notice of the talent Coach P is bringing in (Peterson,Scott,Wade)…. There will be tremendous competition in our Back court….. Starting now!

On a different note, I think Nobles and Delvon Johnson looked much improved over the last two games. They could be ready for big things next year.

  58. BigHogFan BigHogFan says:

We could use another commit on the football board, but I’m worried that after this upcoming season there won’t be enough spots left on the Petrino train for all the guys that want to be HOGS, and go to (more) BCS bowls :)

  59. Alabama_Hog Alabama_Hog says:

Hey Payton, don’t forget about the Diamond Hogs. I’m real excited about our chances to go to Omaha. But I agree, nothing is as exciting as the potiential of our team this fall.

  60. BigHogFan BigHogFan says:

So…Peyton how do you feel about the trade, and your upcoming move to Cleveland? LOL…

  61. Ron in Germany Ron in Germany says:

  63. Ron in Germany Ron in Germany says:

    Big Boi,

Every spring, schools search for legitimate post players to beef up their front lines. This spring, junior college prospect Ricardo Ratliffe of Ocala (Fla.) Central Florida C.C. has become a prime recruiting target after averaging 27 points and 12.5 rebounds per game.

Ratliffe recently visited Arkansas and Alabama – two schools that are at the top of his list.

“The visits were about the same,” Ratliffe told Rivals.com. “We basically did the exact same things on the trips. I wasn’t able to see a game at Alabama, but I did watch practice. I spent time with both teams. Both are good schools and in nice college towns. Really, no visit is going to be a bad visit.”

In no hurry to make a decision, Ratliffe also plans to visit Missouri, Cincinnati and Clemson before he signs in April.

Claiming all five schools are even at this point, Ratliffe will be thinking beyond college when he picks a school.

“I want to play where my skills can develop,” he said. “I’d like to be an NBA pick by my junior year. I don’t want to play like I have chains on me. I can do more than most big men. If I shoot a (3-pointer) and miss, and the coach takes me out then I’ll know that I chose the wrong school.”

  64. thats almost a sin to charge for reading the rest of an article that short. interesting that Ratliffe wants to be able to shoot the three. I don’t think Pelphrey looks highly on that…..

  65. he says nothing in this report that leads me to expect him to pick arkansas soon. disappointing.

  66. Ron in Germany Ron in Germany says:

The aricle was alot longer but I was only asked about Ratliffe.

  67. dwp007 dwp007 says:

That was an interesting read. It sounds like Arkansas is still very much in the hunt. Having a buddy, Marshawn Powell, already at the UA and knowing that he would have an immediate impact, like Powell, could possibly favor the Razorbacks involving Ratcliffe’s decison. Thanks for sharing, Ron. ;)

Has anyone heard anything on the search for a new assistant? Are there any more staff changes expected?

    ———————————————————–

Miss State’s problem was a weak non-conference schedule along with some bad losses. If they had played teams with a higher RPI, they would have made it easily. That should be a lesson to any team in the future, fill your nonconference slate with cupcakes and you’re gonna be in the NIT, even with 23 wins.

  79. Blake Blake says:

Winthrop was a good team too. I think that tells people that there is some good basketball being played down in the small southern conferences. Unfortunately to be able to fund their programs they have to play all over the country against major teams and get pummeled and ruin their overall records like UAPB starting 0-11.

College basketball is changing some for some small and mid major conferences, but I don’t think it is going to change for the SWACs of the college basketball world.

  80. Rotnei Clarke’s dad interviewed today, good stuff, very illuminating. It just goes to show fans are not the only ones frustrated with the direction of the program.
