Junior college power forward Dwight McCombs of Moraine Valley Community College in Palos Hills, Ill., was featured in Friday’s recruiting column.
McCombs, 6-8, 240-pounds reports scholarship offers from Arkansas, Minnesota, Penn State, Missouri, Murray State, Middle Tennessee State and Texas –El Paso while receiving interest from Arizona State and Washington State.
He averaged about 23 points, 14 rebounds, and 4 block shots a game while earning first team Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference honors this season. McCombs played at Chicago Whitney Young high school and signed with Miami-Ohio in 2007 but transferred before playing his sophomore season.
Being from Chicago, McCombs is familiar with Arkansas guard Jemal Farmer and center Delvon Johnson, both of whom are from the Windy City.
“They’re both from the Chicago area,” said McCombs, who’s being recruited by assistant coach Isaac Brown. “So I’m going to talk to them and get a feel from them. I don’t they won’t lie to me because they’re from Chicago. I can get a good feel from them on how everything is.”
McCombs said he wants to see how the players interacts with the coaches while visiting
“Every college visit will be about the same,” McCombs said. “They always want to show you a good time. It’s really how the players feel about the coaches. When you’re playing for a coach, your family is pretty much your team. That’s who you’re going to spend the majority of your time with while you’re at the university”.
While college coaches are only allowed one phone call a week to prospects, recruits can call the coaches at any time.
“Ever since they’ve were in on me, I’ve been calling them,” McCombs said of Brown. “I’ve stayed in contact with him as much as I can.”

We were only planning on bringing in one more player. If we are offering this kid it probably means we are not getting Ratliffe or somebody else is leaving.
Probably the ladder.
we had a player unable to play all year due to health issues
What is the latest on Ratliffe? I know he’s taking all his visits. Any feeling from you Richard? Thanks!
I prefer Devonta Abron, the power forward from Dallas. This MCombs guy could just be a clone of Delvon Johnson, our # 21 on the team. If we get both Ratliff and Abron, were in the big dance for sure.
Abron is a 2011 recruit
Ratliffe is talented but he’s not our savior. i’ve seen him play several times and he’s a good player but he’s short. He’s listed at 6’8″ and he might be with his shoes on. There’s another guy on their team that’s 6’9″ and he looks alot taller. Anyway…Ratliffe is a 4 not a 5. He is a low post player but will be going up against taller Div 1 centers on the next level not Jucos.
Unless Pel tighten’s up the ship fundamentally and improves his system to get the most out of his players we could bring in Kareem Abdul Jabbar from 30 years ago and it still wouldn’t help.
O.k. o.k….Kareem would help. What’s he doing now?
Kareem is battling brain cancer.
Someone asked earlier what Corliss Williamson record was at Arkansas Baptist.
This year they went 21-7
Hate to hear about Kareem. He was a great ballplayer. And pilot if you’ve watched Airplane.
I think Williamson was an assistant for Ark Baptist wasn’t he Ron? Not the head coach?
Yes, he was hired in 2007 as an assistant.

Mccombs is much much better than Delvon. He would be a very solid pickup
We will land Ratliffe. And he may not be our savior, but we have to have him.
Corliss became head coach in 2009 at ark baptist!
I think Rand Chappel got a raw deal from UCA. Corliss was a great player but unproven as a head coach. Big risk, maybe he can recruit.
I’m wondering if either Micheal Sanchez is done with basketball or if we’re offering this scholorship as a backup plan for Ricardo Ratliffe?
It’s always good to have a plan B.
Traditional true centers are becoming a thing of the past. Most bigs now days are molded more towards the PF body type.
Teams these days like to run when given an opportunity, and coaches recruiting for the low post/inside positions seem to lean more toward the 6’8″/6’9″, 225 to 240 lb. athletic body types.
If you can find a 6’10″ to 7’0″ recruit that fits this mold, they’re rare.
