I wouldn’t be suprised if I end up posting by myself on here tonight. Well atleast I wont lose an argument…but then again won’t win one either. :)

    C’mon HOGS!!!

  2. joshua joshua says:

wow, 4 minutes into the game and ONE post :)

  3. PeytonHillisFTW PeytonHillisFTW says:

Georgia is like 0-8 on the road, but i think they win this game.

  4. joshua joshua says:

    What do ya think, joshua?

  5. joshua joshua says:

Well, joshua, too early to tell.

  6. OldRazorback OldRazorback says:

Think we could squeeze out one or two rebounds this game?

  7. PeytonHillisFTW PeytonHillisFTW says:

Message to Mike Washington — dont take a million charges and risk fouling out
Message to Marshawn Powell — go to the bucket strong and quickly
Message to Rotnei Clarke — do some more three-faints and drive to the basket moves to open up the three
Message to entire team — act like you know how to play defense

  8. Marcus Marcus says:

geez, they already look like they’d rather be somewhere else. I really hate this team. they got no heart. they act like it doesn’t matter to them. Corliss weeps.

  9. OldRazorback OldRazorback says:

Looks like this is gonna be one more embarrassing defeat. What’s new?

  10. PeytonHillisFTW PeytonHillisFTW says:

and we all know what courtney needs to do — dont turn the ball over!

  11. Marcus Marcus says:

12:43 into the game and Hogs are down 10 already to Georgia. this is beyond pathetic. and to think Jeff Long believes Pel is the right guy for the job? that makes me question Long’s ability as an AD.

  12. PeytonHillisFTW PeytonHillisFTW says:

this is really embarassing at this point

  13. joshua joshua says:

Ugh, why do I always get my hopes up?

    C’MON HOGS!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. OldRazorback OldRazorback says:

First three games today have at least been competitive. This Arkansas team is an embarrassment to Razorbackers everywhere.

  15. OKOFCOURSE OKOFCOURSE says:

Yeah, get a hair cut and keep his mouth piece in.

  16. joshua joshua says:

that move be Welsh was the UGLIEST BASKETBALL MOVE I’ve ever seen!

  17. OKOFCOURSE OKOFCOURSE says:

No matter who our coach is Mark Fox is going to be trouble.

True…but that one was uglier than the normal ugly :)

  20. OKOFCOURSE OKOFCOURSE says:

I missed it. I hope it comes up on the high light video.

  21. joshua joshua says:

Man, Powell tryies to “doopty-doo” when he drives to the hoop. He needs to get mad at the rim and go strong!

  22. PeytonHillisFTW PeytonHillisFTW says:

leslie gets his own rebound on the foul shot….unbelievable

  23. joshua joshua says:

Nobels can freakin’ play some DEFENSE!

  24. OldRazorback OldRazorback says:

Nobles is playing a good game. He’s better than Fortson.

  25. OldRazorback OldRazorback says:

I’m confused…what’s happening? Will it continue?

  26. PeytonHillisFTW PeytonHillisFTW says:

lol nobles and britt know how to play defense

  27. joshua joshua says:

he is tonight so far anyway

  28. OKOFCOURSE OKOFCOURSE says:

Was that “missed” free throw by Leslie planned?

thnx, but I don’t have Cox

  32. OldRazorback OldRazorback says:

    I don’t have Cox either.

  33. joshua joshua says:

something must be weird with my computer b/c I’ve tried and it won’t let me on. Oh well, I’ll have TV access by the second half anyway. thanks though

  34. PeytonHillisFTW PeytonHillisFTW says:

lol @ fortson passing it to the ref, first turnover

  35. OldRazorback OldRazorback says:

Wish Pel would put Ratliffe in the game!

  36. OldRazorback OldRazorback says:

    and Todd Day

  37. OldRazorback OldRazorback says:

    37-32 with 52 seconds

  38. joshua joshua says:

I heard Andrew Lang could still block some shots, maybe he could help

  39. yellcohog yellcohog says:

Whats the score anybody and how much time left.

  40. joshua joshua says:

What? Do I hear some “Cannon Whitby” chants from the crowd in Nashville?

  41. OldRazorback OldRazorback says:

    40-32 halftime

  42. OldRazorback OldRazorback says:

In the final minute of first half, Clark missed a 3-pointer, Mcphee(?) didn’t.

  43. yellcohog yellcohog says:

    Who’s winning

  44. PeytonHillisFTW PeytonHillisFTW says:

fitting way to end the first half

  45. OKOFCOURSE OKOFCOURSE says:

    Take a wild guess, yellcohog!!!

  46. belpa zhog belpa zhog says:

Pel truly has no defense for 3 pointers. Unless Pel address this issue of defending the other teams 3 point shots, we are not going anywhere. One player can beat this team. How come other teams can defend and contest our 3 pointers and WE WON’T DEFEND AND CONTEST THEIR 3 POINTERS.

  47. OKOFCOURSE OKOFCOURSE says:

They have more than one player who can hit the 3 and we only have one….well none now!!!

  48. Boubalos Boubalos says:

I was going to ask who was the one. For the last 7 or 8 games Clarke is making about 15%.

  49. belpa zhog belpa zhog says:

The team continues to play without fundamentals. No block out on free throws. Easy rebound and easy layup for the other team. I realy wish Pel opens practice to the public so we can see how they practice and what is being taught at practice. Unbelievable.

  50. OKOFCOURSE OKOFCOURSE says:

I say we just keep Clarke running around (not shooting) and we run their best defender to death.

  51. Hog n OKC Hog n OKC says:

Hmmm, watch the rest of the game or a Family Guy rerun? Family Guy it is!

  52. RazorRandy RazorRandy says:

Enjoy it, I hope they are experiencing “fair weather”.

  53. belpa zhog belpa zhog says:

It makes me wonder what Pel tells the team at half time. Even when we are ahead we tend to lose games. Now that we are behind, I am so worried I don’t feel like watching the 2nd half. Goodnight everybody.

  54. Matt Matt says:

I love the way the refs are letting Ga go over our backs.

  55. OldRazorback OldRazorback says:

Just showed that Hogs have a -5.5 rebound disadvantage. Seems like more.

  56. OKOFCOURSE OKOFCOURSE says:

At least our guys are standing around watching them rebound…..maybe they will learn something.

  57. OldRazorback OldRazorback says:

Lol! That’s the ONLY coaching they’re gonna get.

  58. OldRazorback OldRazorback says:

Hogs at definite disadvantage: no offense; no defense; no rebounding; NO COACH!!

  59. Hog n OKC Hog n OKC says:

Fair weather or whatever, I’ve got a nice parking spot on the hill with my name all over it. Save your “poker winnings” and maybe you can buy a bus ticket and come up and tailgate sometime. I hear Greyhound has some good deals these days.

  60. Matt Matt says:

At least the fouls are now being called.

  61. OldRazorback OldRazorback says:

I agree Hog n OKC, I too am an alumni, a foundation contributor, and a season ticket holder. I can bitch and moan all I want to. I’ve paid for that right not only with money, but by being an avid Hog fan for over forty years. SO THERE!

  62. Matt Matt says:

OldR, with the best case in recruiting and players returning next year, what record do you think Pel can deliver?

  63. Boubalos Boubalos says:

If they get Ratliff, they will go to the NCAA.

  64. RazorRandy RazorRandy says:

    Thought you were watching cartoons.

  65. OldRazorback OldRazorback says:

    I don’t anticipate much improvement. I hope I’m wrong.

  66. OldRazorback OldRazorback says:

I hope Ratliffe becomes a Hog, but still think we’ll be on the small side inside.

  67. OldRazorback OldRazorback says:

    WOW! We’re within 3!

  68. OldRazorback OldRazorback says:

    Didn’t last long.

  69. Boubalos Boubalos says:

I say most of the improvement next year will be in Rickey Scott.

  70. OldRazorback OldRazorback says:

I’d love to have at least one more game to watch this year. Come on HOGS!

  71. OldRazorback OldRazorback says:

Scott should help alot, but we need an “aircraft carrier” in the middle!

  72. PeytonHillisFTW PeytonHillisFTW says:

    ARkansas -10 rebound tonight

  74. RazorRandy RazorRandy says:

I agree OldRazorback, but Ratliffe would be enough to get us dancing.

  75. OldRazorback OldRazorback says:

Ga has 17 offensive rebounds? Are you kidding?

  76. OldRazorback OldRazorback says:

Yes Sir! This old man loves to dance!

  77. OldRazorback OldRazorback says:

Well, as in the big dance that is.

  78. Boubalos Boubalos says:

Well that was Washington’s last game. He certainly can’t play NBA.

  79. OldRazorback OldRazorback says:

We’ve got em right where we want em!

  80. OldRazorback OldRazorback says:

    Welsh is killin us.

  81. Boubalos Boubalos says:

Maybe the greatest improvement next year will be not having Welsh.

  82. OldRazorback OldRazorback says:

Guess I’ll go to Baum tomorrow and watch the diamond hogs.

  83. Hog n OKC Hog n OKC says:

Let us all look on the bright side. We won’t have to endure watching Welsh next year!!!

  84. OldRazorback OldRazorback says:

    If a kid can’t make free throws, he isn’t a D-1 player!

  85. Matt Matt says:

Hard to believe that if we had only made a handful of the inside gimmees and freethrows we would be winning right now.

  86. PeytonHillisFTW PeytonHillisFTW says:

    we suck. thanks pel

  87. OKOFCOURSE OKOFCOURSE says:

Does anyone know if Family Guy was any good or not?

  88. Hog n OKC Hog n OKC says:

I can’t wait to get up there and watch some baseball. Radio truly doesn’t do it justice. We do have a beautiful stadium and should be very proud of it especially after seeing other collegiate ballparks. If any of you folks haven’t been, you should really try to go.

  89. hatman7663 hatman7663 says:

c’mon peyton, it’s not ENTIRELY pels fault that this years hogs suk. youth played a minor role as well.

next year will be much improved if you subscribe to the addition by subtraction way of thinking – ANY team WITHOUT stefan welsh will be better!

  90. Hog n OKC Hog n OKC says:

It was hilarious. Peter and the guys were the A-Team.

  91. Hog n OKC Hog n OKC says:

I chose laughter over frustration tonight.

  92. OKOFCOURSE OKOFCOURSE says:

Pel’s got some tall shooting guards coming in and some size, especially if we get Ratcliff, and besides his number is handing in Rupp Arena because he was a member of that group called the …….hmmm….the un….UUUUgh….Hell, I forgot.

  93. hatman7663 hatman7663 says:

tall shooting guards will be a plus, maybe provide a little perimitter defense – something the current crop of sub 6′ guards are incapable of doing consistently. maybe we’ll make the NIT next year.

  94. joshua joshua says:

youth played a minor role as well.

Sorry, but that’s just not true. College basketball is young now. Juniors are old guys and good seniors are rare. Most teams are young. We had lots of fresh. and sophs. light us up this year. Youth is no longer an excuse.

Our problem was lack of depth, no leadership, no creativity on offense, and an inability of our coaching staff to make adjustments…oh, and Welsh…actually scrap everything I said and just blame it all on Welsh.

    Good night, guys

  95. your mom goes to college your mom goes to college says:

Ugh…glad that’s over. Also glad I’m a college hoops fan and not just a Razorback fan. I’ll still enjoy watching games the rest of the weekend and the next 3 weekends. Let’s Go Duke!

BTW, when the Hogs are not a factor, do any of you have a specific team you root for?

  96. poch punt poch punt says:

Would hate to play Connecticut women

  97. joshua joshua says:

If Hogs are not in it? I pull for Duke.

Ok, good night again…I mean it this time.

  98. OKOFCOURSE OKOFCOURSE says:

Not me I would foul out after 5 minutes posting up.

  99. J R J R says:

I feel like I’ve been in the dentist’s office since November and have had an on going root canal with no pain killer. I’m glad the season’s over. I don’t think I can take anymore. I’ve stuck with Pel all year, but I’ve seen enough now to know that he is not the man for the job. Message to Jeff Long: Replace him now with a high profile coach or we lose most if not all this great high school talent in the class of 2011. If not, 2010 and beyond will be more trips to the dentist. Ouch!

I’m confused, was that you screwing with me that evening? I don’t keep up like you guys with parking spots “with my name all over it”. As far as “poker winnings” go, my only point was that you seemed to be my good luck charm that day. Every time you insulted me, I won. I love it! I wasn’t going to play tonight but I gonna put this to the test. Nice to hear from you. Keep it coming so I can let you know if you truly are my leprechaun.

  101. Matt Matt says:

If Ratliff is in, we roll through 54 wins over the next two years.
    Mark it down!

  102. cane cane says:

Davidson was my team but Curry and I left the same year and now it hurts to watch. At least the razorbacks have athletes who can run and jump. I hope Madden and Mickelson watch and say, “man, if I came I could make a difference.”

  103. RazorRandy RazorRandy says:

Oh, and by the way, maybe you can start a news letter or web site to share your Greyhound bus research with. I personally don’t need it but, hey, since you’ve put in the time…..

  104. bigdaddy d bigdaddy d says:

Hey guys, most of you know me…and i never thought that i’d be the one on here taking up for stefan welsh…but, the kid came to arkansas to play basketball for the razorbacks. he had other options, but he wanted to be a hog. he doesn’t always make good decisions, but he does play hard, and i wish him the best of luck in his life, and i want to say thank you to all the kids that are graduating.

on another note…the only coach that i can think of, that would be worth risking losing this next recruiting class for would be Mike Anderson, and i don’t think he would come to Arkansas. give Pel another year, and see if he can sign these in state studs, and if he doesn’t, then drop him like a jevon snead pass!

Final thought: Is it me, or do the referees hate Courtney Fortson. He drives the lane, gets clobbered, and no foul is called. He gets great postition on his player, causes him to charge into him, no foul is called. Is it because he seems to be a little thuggish, or what?

  105. HOGen-Dazs HOGen-Dazs says:

If Ratliff is in, we roll through 54 wins over the next two years.
    Mark it down!
    ********************************************************************

And what if he’s not in??

  106. Hog n OKC Hog n OKC says:

LOL! I do think we have better all around talent on the way but they will still be freshmen in need of coaching. I hope Pel proves me wrong but I saw no progress at all throughout this year to lead me to believe he can get this program back on track. Fortson came in and won some games for us but then the opponents schemed against him and we were right back where we started. However, I will be back as a basketball season ticket holder next year to go along with football. It’s only to support my university and the athletes. The basketball ticket sales have hurt the athletic program over the last several years.

  107. daniel H daniel H says:

Oh I saw progress, then I saw regress

  108. cane cane says:

powell went sort of quiet tonight. i wonder if his statement of leadership wasn’t a little presumptuous on his part in terms of team camaraderie.

  109. OKOFCOURSE OKOFCOURSE says:

I agree bigdaddy d what you posted on Stefan Welsh and I take back what I’ve said about him during the games. He did cause some turnovers tonight with his tormenting defense and he always gives 100%. I should have remained silent, well unposted but I do wish him good luck and I bet everyone else does also.

  110. Hog n OKC Hog n OKC says:

    RazorRandy,
No it wasn’t me making fun of you that night but it was entertaining nonetheless. All jokes aside, you do seem like a fun guy to have a few beers with and play a few hands. I’m a horrible poker player but do enjoy it. My wife is actually a pretty good player but has given up on my poker playing abilities. I have pretty severe ADHD and it really shines through in a poker game. I’m that annoying guy who’s always asking if it’s my play.

  111. Hog n OKC Hog n OKC says:

Welsh was also a factor in getting Powell I believe. Of course we wish him well and hope he has success in life. Go put that college education to work Mr. Welsh.

  112. RazorRandy RazorRandy says:

Hog n OKC, since I posted that, I realized who it was. Sorry for my confusion. Yes, it would be fun to have a few beers. Let’s leave the cards out of it. I live in Austin and plan on making a trip to The Hill in the fall. Maybe I can take you up on the tailgating offer when I come. I want to do a trip on the White River to coincide with coming over to watch The Hogs.

  113. CaliforniaHog CaliforniaHog says:

So, this is how the season ends.If you are a Razorback fan and are not ashamed at the performance of his group then there is something wrong with you. Save all of the excuses, (the team is young, no discipline among players, lack of focus, poor coaching) you know its time out for all of these excuses. Why don’t we just admit that the program is in a serious mess? we need a new and strong minded staff who is able to take the talent we have on hand and use it to the best of its ability to win and I just don’t see Coach Pel doing that. It’s time to wake up Razorback nation, the football team is back on track now lets focus on restructoring the BB team!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  114. Ron in Germany Ron in Germany says:

If we could get these 2 players we could win it all. Enjoy ! ! !

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2evawTJgu6E

  115. RazorRandy RazorRandy says:

And what do you suggest AD CaliforniaHog?

  116. CaliforniaHog CaliforniaHog says:

Coach Pel should step down because he has allowed this team to slip 6 straight times after previously winning 7 out of 8? there is something wrong here and I think we as fans are entitled to a better performance by our beloved razorback BB team. we need a coach who can recruit the right players that will help us first compete in the SEC on a high level and better compete on a national level. its been done before and it can be done now if the administration is willing to take that step, but as it stands now, the razorbacks are in a real mess!!!!!!

  117. tahoehog tahoehog says:

Pathetic… I’ve seen better teams at the Y. Pel needs to go be an assistant somewhere… he’s not Div 1 head coach material at this point in his career.

  118. GonzoHog GonzoHog says:

“Coach Pel should step down because he has allowed this team to slip 6 straight times after previously winning 7 out of 8?”
    —————————————————
Seems like a fair enough assessment.

“we need a coach who can recruit the right players”
    —————————————————
Hmmm… and here all this time I thought we had better players coming in?

“its been done before and it can be done now if the administaration is willing to take that step”
    ———————————————
OK, so who’s stepping here, the administration or Pel?

  119. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

Let’s hire and fire coaches every 3 years. That’s real smart!

  120. poch punt poch punt says:

Wally Hall lamented our lack of team play, which to a degree I agree with. What no one wants to admit is, if you break down this team player by player the talent level is not there. Fortson makes some foolish decisions more out of necessity than being selfish. Who besides him is able to break down the man guarding them. NONE Our lack of athletisism is disheartning. All the teamwork in the world won’t somehow transform a bad shooter into making open 15 footers. There are a lot of poor teams in the SEC. We can probably now lay claim to being the worst. Our new recruits better be miracle workers right away.

  121. GonzoHog GonzoHog says:

Just by having 2 liabilities graduate this season, while replacing them with better talent, should go a long way next season.
Maybe now the real talent on this team can take over and give them an identity with better leadership.

  122. Matt Matt says:

Poch, just by mentioning Wally’s name, you lost cred w/me.

I also want to throw in the possible leadership and settling effect that Peterson could very well bring to the table next season. Whether Fortson is back or not, we have the potential to be in very good shape at PF with Peterson and (more mature)Nobles. Fortson won’t have to try to do too much, like he felt he needed to this season. Johnson, Bryant and Powell will be bigger and stronger for next season. You throw in 6-3 to 6-4 combo guards and our perimeter D should improve. With Waithe and possibly Ratliff, I can see a measurable improvement with regard to consistent rebounding and interior defense, not to mention improving offensively. There is just too much “upside” with bringing back Pel. I see more good and bad with bringing him back.
    JMO

  123. Matt Matt says:

I also see the potential for R. Clark to be a backup for the rest of his career. Being the Alex Dillard type. Important during different “runs” during a game by shooting the three. I really like rotnei, but he offers virtually nothing else besides 3pt shooting.
I look for the new guards take his minutes.

  124. belpa zhog belpa zhog says:

The season is over. Arkansas needs a big man. A true center. And to attract a true center, Pel has to fire one of his assistants to make room for the likes of Joe Kline who can mentor and inspire “bigs”. There is no one in the current staff that can inspire and mentor “bigs”. If anything else, Arkansas can forget about practicing shooting the ball or dribbling. They need to concentrate on “blocking out” and “timely” passing. And get a coach or assistant who can and will defend and contest 3 point shooters.

  125. belpa zhog belpa zhog says:

Please let us not bash Welch, Washington or any player because we can never tell if a potential recruit reads these postings and find out that Razorback fans are haters. It is one thing to hate to lose but another to hate a player for bad decision and execution or bad play.
So please, fellow hog fans. No hate postings please. Do not excuse hate for being “passionate”. I have been quilty myself and now the season is over. Stop the hate.

  126. I dont buy the youth excuses, etc, etc.

The bottom line is Pel had all his pieces in place towards the end of the year, Washington eventually got healthy, he had “depth” enough to rotate 10 players in the Georgia game.

But how did we end the year? 1-8.

    1-8 people!!

  127. sorry, 1-7!!!

i believe the six losses in a row was the worst run ever for Arkansas basketball. Man, Pelphrey must be pointing this program in the right direction!

  128. we dont “hate” welsh, we marvel at his poor decisionmaking in his senior year, and far from discouraging Arkansas recruits, it should serve as an example to them of how not to improve.

and its not all Welsh’s fault, a lot of it has to do with Coach pel’s responsibility to get these upperclassmen improved over the years.

like someone else mentioned, we seem to have no real developer of big men, who helps them finish strong in their fundamentals near the basket. I saw multiple attempts of passing inside to the post this year, but our big men almost always were positioned too far away from the basket, so they had to kick it back out, or take an off-balance prayer of a turn-around jump shot. frustrating.

the only real big man play appeared to be the screen-slip-run-to-the-basket, which opposing teams figured out quickly by the end of the year.

  129. Matt Matt says:

The 1st game of this season R.Clark and J.Farmer combined for
    79 pts, 14 rebs, 11 assists!
    Verses:
4 pts, 0 rebs, 0 assists in the last game of the season!

  130. jack abbott jack abbott says:

Jeff Long is the one who can make the right move now. If not, HOGS are stuck in BB bottom for the foreseeable future. According to Arkansas Democrat Gazette the current coach is making $1.245 million per year. Add another half mil to that and we can get half of the top 25 team coaches interested in taking over this train wreck.

  131. Ima Hawg Ima Hawg says:

I really don’t see where the program is headed after 3 years. HOPING that some new talent will magically change the program in the face of NO direction, NO coaching up, NO sense of identity. Pel doesn’t even do a good job of selling the program to the fans and giving us some hope even if it is false hope. He belongs in the Sunbelt. We need a big time coach and a big time staff with big time winning ambitions!

  132. Jeff Long, please end our suffering.

  133. Blake Blake says:

    Not going to happen.

  134. Matt Matt says:

    Gotta have next season.
At the end of last season I gave NCAA predictions for this year. BUT that was based on a healthy Washington playing like a stud; having one of the best up and coming small forwards in the SEC in Jason Henry(27pt, 14 rebs verses SC); having a steady no-frills power forward in Sanchez; along with having Fortson for the ENTIRE season.
Every one of those were altered to a great extent, thus no post season.
Pel desearves our support for another full year, if not more.

  135. Blake Blake says:

Petterson, Wade, and Scott will completely change the look of our guard play. Clarke and Fortson will either find their spot in there or get knocked out. Britt and Nobles likely fit in more right now because of their defensive prowess than those other two. Next seasons guard play could be really good.

Waithe is going to be like a Robert Horry type of guy for us. I have seen some people say a Todd Day, but he is not near as lanky as Day.

Ratliffe is the piece that we need.

Lets just face it guys. Some of it was because of suspensions and some because of injuries but we just did not have the talent this year. We were way too short on the perimeter and next season that will change dramatically. We never had two big bodies healthy at the same time it seemed like. Wash with his back issues and Sanchez out all year with his feet.

Bryant is a pogo stick and I liked his progress, but he was a typical freshman that was not ready. Farmer and Johnson were a bit disappointing as Juco transfers, but they did show flashes and next year is it for them so they click or they don’t. Hopefully they do. Nobles I really liked. He hit a wall for a bit there, but he is a tough kid and I like his D. He played a lot better near the end when given a chance.

On paper if we get Ratliffe we will have the pieces to be a a very good team. If next year it does not happen, people will be going crazy but even then Long will likely stand behind Pel as long as we were a lot better than this year.

The inner workings of this program have been a mess for some time. Long is trying to give Pel a good amount of time to get that done. His players are just not about to be upperclassmen, and so lets see what we get.

He is not going to be fired. I don’t know how many times people want Long to proclaim that, but he will keep doing it if he has to. Some people have been saying awful things about Washington and Welsh and I think it is a little out of hand. These guys played hard and gave it all they had. They are Razorbacks, and I understand they didn’t do great things in a Hog uniform, but Razorback fans are better than that.

Man the new age has brought a lot of things. Lame ass skinny jeans, stupid freakin hipster looks, kids with attitudes that are pale as a ghost because they would rather play with electronics in the house than go out and have a good time, and worst of all Razorback fans that take it too far and personally against players and coaches when they struggle and lose.

  136. Big Boi Big Boi says:

Jeff Long, please end our suffering.

    By PeytonHillisFTW on Mar 12, 2010 @ 11:11am

Keeping CJP around could be the beginning of the end for Jeff Long. I would guess 30-35% of the ppl are starting to lose faith in both CJP and Long.(IMO)

  137. Blake, we did have two big men healthy and performing well in 2 recent games — ole miss and Georgia, and we lost both. Pelphrey said Washington was feeling better for those games than all year.

  138. Blake Blake says:

Ok lets take a look at something: Baseball team goes to CWS, Golf team finishes second in the nation at the NCAA championships by one stroke on the final hole (amazing shot by A&M player if you didn’t see it), Track is still great and just won an SEC Indoor championship, Football is on the rise under Bobby Petrino, our smaller sports are also rocking and rolling well, and basketball is struggling.

What am I missing hear that is saying Long is doing awful? Come on. Have some perspective.

Losing sucks, and the Hogs basketball team sucks right now. We all get it. The memo is officially received by everyone, but Long and Pelphrey are doing what they believe they need to do to get the program to the level of these other athletics at Arkansas. The state and university deserve it, and well I guess the fans do. I guess..not with how many have started to act of the recent years.

It is a fact. Punaneism is taking over the fan base. You like that?

My post above said what I think about the Arkansas basketball program. I watched everygame that 360 had on, and every game had my hopes up so I know exactly how frustrating it is. But when the AD says this is my guy, and his guy is bringing in the necessary talent in 2010 and has the necessary talent in 2011 all right at his finger tips. Come on… 1 + 1 = ?

  139. Blake Blake says:

Peyton we had two big healthy men for a few games. I said it seemed like we never did.

So we had two. How many big healthy inside players did most of our opposition typically have?

  140. Jeff Long says its also a lot about academic progress when it comes to keeping Pelphrey, which is ironic considering the extremely high turnover rate under Pelphrey.

  141. Blake Blake says:

Pelphrey had to take some risks. It is all well understood and documented.

Now he has been at the UofA an adequate amount of time to have real relationships on the recruiting trail. Just look at the talent level showing offers and interest in the Hogs for 2011 and what we grabbed in 2010.

On the academics Long clearly knows more about what Pel has done and required of his kids than we do. The transfers and the dismissals for academics and other reasons may have looked bad or like a revolving door, but clearly Long agreed with Pel’s decisions on those kids.

  142. Firehouse Firehouse says:

History repeats itself and this team is carbon copy of Stan Heath’s team that quit on him and stopped listening to him closing with losing streak and refusing to play in the NIT. What followed was two promising but mediocre seasons and firing for fan apathy and low attendance.

  143. dakid87 dakid87 says:

Honestly the hogs would of won more games if all the suspensions wouldn’t had happen. Honestly I think Coach P is doing a good job. This year teams lacked leadership and everybody knew that. I honestly think the team will be better next year as long as any off court problems don’t surface. But for the most parts I think this year shows what the future holds for us and its bright. We held 1st place in the west for a little while. I think we push for that and championship next season. That’s my honest opinion.

  144. Blake Blake says:

That is one way to see it Firehouse, and the one that seems to have become the popular view.

I hope Pelphrey and the top kids interested in Arkansas prove everyone wrong. Of course hopefully a bitter fan base does not hurt his chances of landing said top talent. It luckily did not effect our early signing period of Waithe, Scott, and Wade. But it could effect Ratliffe. I sure as hell hope it doesn’t though, because we need him badly.

Ross is already committed for 2011. I guess what I am missing here is that Ross is like a Frazier type recruit for the 2011 basketball class, but Pel is getting no love for having him already committed so early. Whats up with that? Can Pel do no right in peoples minds?

  145. Blake Blake says:

dakid87 nice to see another hopeful perspective.

I unfortunately called for us to win the West when we had the lead with Bama, LSU, and Auburn coming up. Sucks we didn’t get that done. We should have, but the kids wheels just came off.

I already proclaimed that I think we win the West next season, and I am sticking by that. I will enjoy hearing what is thought of the team and Pel when that happens next season.

  146. Big Boi Big Boi says:

Ok lets take a look at something: Baseball team goes to CWS, Golf team finishes second in the nation at the NCAA championships by one stroke on the final hole (amazing shot by A&M player if you didn’t see it), Track is still great and just won an SEC Indoor championship, Football is on the rise under Bobby Petrino, our smaller sports are also rocking and rolling well, and basketball is struggling.

    By Blake on Mar 12, 2010 @ 11:40am

Blake, Baseball is doing good because of Coach Dave Van Horn not Jeff Long. And no one care about Golf, Track or gymnastics. If Jeff Long keeps CJP and he misses on all the Arkansas kids(Ross wants to be Hawg whoever the coach is) and we finish next year with 16-19 wins Mr. Long won’t be a popular man(He’ll be the next chancellor White). And isn’t Jeff Long rumored to be interested in taking the Michigan AD job? It’s the AD’s job to evaluate each program after it’s season is over. Not to give blind support to a struggling coach. If 40% of Bud Walton was empty for senior day that should be all Jeff Long needs to see to back off his 2 more years at least statement.

  147. “Of course hopefully a bitter fan base does not hurt his chances of landing said top talent.”

–Hopefully our underperforming coach doesn’t hurt his own chances of landing top talent.

  148. I don’t believe good recruits, like good coaches, don’t shy away from fan bases with high expectations that accompany their honored traditions.

It would be nice for a reminder of that fact. These days we are more embarassed of our program than proud of it.

  149. Blake Blake says:

Big Boi Ross has said that he would uncommit and possibly not be a Hog if Pelphrey was fired so I have no idea where you based that statement from.

Peyton AKA the man I know as three names and only one is real…If the Pelphrey does not get it turned around with the upcoming talent I will also say he should be fired. But not yet. He has not been given the time given the state of the program. Yes, we should expect more and I think people remind everyone of the fact on a regular basis around here. No reminder needed is what I am saying.

We suck right now, and are in no way part of the college basketball landscape. I get that, but things can change quickly.

I will say it again. The Razorbacks win the SEC West next season and show solid improvement. That is with or without Ratliffe. With him we could rise higher than many people understand.

  150. Hog in OKC Hog in OKC says:

We should agree that as far as basketball goes the SEC is and has been horrible for the past few seasons and we still can’t make the dance. I choose to be an optimist as far as next season goes but if the X’s and O’s don’t improve, then what? How long are we going to wait? Just the fact that our kids looked totally lost and out of sync even towards the end of the season is something we just can’t ignore. Either these kids don’t mesh well together or our coaching can’t get them to buy what they are sellin. Either way, something has to change and change fast. Now we are bringing in some FRESHMEN that are going to immediately impact our chances and improve us so much. I hope so but I just don’t see it happening.

  151. Hog in OKC Hog in OKC says:

Nothing has led me to believe that Pelphrey and his staff have the ability to take these 18 year old kids coming in and coach them up to where they need to be in order to make us a contender. I would like someone to show me facts that will change my mind.

  152. dakid87 dakid87 says:

No problem blake. Half of the people on here saying fire him but the minute we was winning they were saying keep him. When we win the west next year and reach the ncaa tournament they will yell for an extension for him. Watch and see.

  153. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

Just bringing in competition will help immediately. Guys like Fortson won’t be able to play recklessly because Pel will be able to pull him. We have the junior transfer and 2 highly rated guards coming in. This team lacked depth big-time. We just need one more piece of the puzzle to sign with us.

  154. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

Going from 2 wins in the SEC to 7 doesn’t show you improvement?
Funny, I bet you think Petrino and the football team really improved going from 2-6 to 3-5.

  155. dwp007 dwp007 says:

For the time being, I am also sticking with Pel and believe he has a plan on where this team needs to go, with the right kind of players.

To begin with, the year itself came on the heels of losing numerous players through dismissals and early departures post 2009, followed by extended suspensions this season. The obvious lack of depth eventually developed somewhat over the course of the season and should pay major dividends next year. The incoming recruits look solid, though landing Ricardo Ratcliffe would be huge.

I would like to see some staff changes, however, and expect the Razorbacks to once again be on the rise next season with much better play and many more wins. Anything less than 20 wins and an NCAA bid would be very disappointing, if not totally unacceptable.

  156. Blake Blake says:

MRP thank you for making those points again.

I have said that time and time again but it does not seem to resonate for some reason.

  157. Blake I was in your court when Arkansas started the SEC season so well, because I assumed that they could keep building on that success and show overall improvement at the end of the year.

Instead what i saw was a total implosion to end the season, in spite of having all the pieces in place (minus a healthy Washington for several games). I saw a closing performance to the season that was even worse than last year, and thats saying something.

  158. Mr P dont even try to compare this to football, it doesnt resonate because it doesnt apply.

Everyone knows Arkansas played one of the hardest schedules in the nation in Petrino’s second year and most expert analysts said the schedule was so tough that Arkansas could improve a lot and still have the same win-loss total.

In basketball the opposite is true. Arkansas plays in a weak division.

  159. Blake Blake says:

I know exactly where you are coming from, but I still think Pel will get it done and that he will end up being a great coach at Arkansas.

I see a large deep group of guards next year that the Hogs will be able to rotate and keep bigger players on the perimeter with, and added size all over the court.

I see young players becoming upperclassmen, and others with one year under their belt.

Much like MRP I see the Hogs won 5 more conference games this year, and we all know it should been like 7 or 8 more but they blew some games.

And I see the competition level rising with the incoming players. They will not be relied upon solely, but Pel can look at Fortson and say you only need to score 8 points a game to be effective. Get your teammates involved more and stop forcing things. He can get 6-8 out of Nobles. Probably 6-8 out of Petterson. Wade and Scott will be able to drop at least that much. Clarke will get more open looks. Waithe can but the ball in the basket. Powell can fill it up. Ratliffe can really fill it up if we can land him.

Then you have the Farmer, Bryant, Johnson, Britt, and Sanchez’ of the team that just need to improve and show better understanding of what we are doing and to chip in. I still think Farmer could become a big time threat for us, but he cannot keep turning it on and off. It has to stay on, and luckily if he is off we will have more bodies to sub there.

  160. Hog in OKC Hog in OKC says:

Sure 7 wins in a horrible conference is some improvement I suppose. As I have said before, I hope Pelphrey succeeds because I do believe in what he stands for but it just doesn’t seem like the teaching of fundamentals has been there. The same guys making the same mistakes over and over and over. I am renewing my season tickets for basketball next season which I let go of back in the Stan Heath days for the simple fact that I do support Pelphrey and what he is doing. I just hope we get results or else we’ll be starting all over AGAIN!! I’ll support my university and foundation regardless but I know there are many out there that will not and the entire athletic program will suffer.

  161. Blake Blake says:

Hog in OKC I understand what you are saying, and you showing support is what it is all about.

If only there were about 20,000 more yous out of the millions of Hog fans. That is what is sad. We can’t even get 20,000 fans to come support the team and university through their struggles. That makes fixing a bad situation even tougher for Pel. People just don’t seem to get that side of things.

  162. Blake Blake says:

Essential what Long is saying time and time again is that he understands the fans perspective, but that with all due respect and he is saying with all due respect, that those fans wouldn’t know their head from a hole in the ground.

I honestly get that vibe off him with how he keeps putting out the statements on Pel going nowhere.

He is our AD. He is a proven AD, and he has shown success in many areas. People in Arkansas just get pissed off too quickly these days, but him saying Pel is making the moves and doing what he needs to do behind the scenes tells me enough for now.

  163. Matt Matt says:

I’m still laying out a minimum of 54 wins over the coming two years.

  164. Matt Matt says:

I’m also the yahoo that predicted at least 19 wins for Nutt’s final 2 seasons, and boy I got hammered by most Hog fans. The vocal fans said no way will could Nutty win anymore than 12-14, but Lets see he won 10 one year and 8 another. I was able to put aside the hate and see the potential. That is exactly what I am doing here. I enjoyed the accusations of Koolade drinking.
    Go Hogs!

Hey Matt, where can I purchase those rose-colored glasses?

  167. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

The SEC West in 2008 and 2009 looked a lot similiar. Alabama was very good both years LSU did better in 2009. Ole Miss was down from 2008. Auburn slightly improved. Miss State slightly improved, yet we only won 1 more conference game. Nutt didn’t leave Petrino with much, but he left it better than he Heath did for Pel.

  168. “Nutt didn’t leave Petrino with much, but he left it better than he Heath did for Pel.

    By MRPRFCT on Mar 12, 2010 @ 1:52pm”

Oh really? I don’t see John Pelphrey getting back to the NCAA tourny with his players do you? He was able to with Heath’s players.

  169. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

Seriously? After the 6 seniors and Patrick Beverly, what did Heath leave Pelphrey? Washington is good. Welsh makes terrible decisions. Britt isn’t an SEC level talent. Sanchez is hurt and really didn’t play this year. There ya go, PHFTW. Are you going to try to argue that you can win with that?

  170. Big Boi Big Boi says:

Britt isn’t an SEC level talent. Sanchez is hurt and really didn’t play this year.

CJP signed Britt and Sanchez. This might be the first step to bring the Hawgs back to the top. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=4989802&campaign=rss&source=NCBHeadlines very excited about this!

  171. dakid87 dakid87 says:

Honestly to tell you the truth. Basketball and football are the same recruiting wise. Every top player wants to go to the most attractive schools. Right now arkansas is not in that list. Nowhere near that list. Arkansas is not like the elite schools. You get the truth with our coaches. We are not going to pay cash or get you a car to go to our school. They are going to tell you like it is. And that’s how it is going to be. We have alot of tradition but thats not what the pre-madonna players want to hear these days. If you go in and talk about championships then you thats where they are going. If you go in and say academics before a championship then you are automatically marked off the list.

  172. Blake Blake says:

Williamson at UCA has me very excited as well.

I am not going to lie. I hope he continues to progress as a coach and one day is the head man for the Razorbacks. I really do. I think recruits would love to play for someone like him.

He is the only player to win three different national championships in basketball: AAU, NCAA, and NBA. I read that somewhere today. I think an AR360 article.

He loves the Hogs, and kids would really relate to a guy like him with the experience he has. I believe he wants to be the head coach at Arkansas some day. Maybe if he makes it there he can talk Nolan into being an assistant coach for him. HAHA. Hey crazier things have happened…

  173. Blake Blake says:

Or maybe he could get Al Dillard to come work on three point shooting, Corey Beck to come work on point guard play, and Clint McDaniel to come work on pressure defense and forcing turnovers and making steals.

Of Corliss would handle working on the big men himself.

  174. Blake Blake says:

    Of course Corliss**

  175. Big Boi Big Boi says:

I think Corliss Williamson is Arkansas favorite native son. It would be great if he has success at UCA and could become the head man at Arkansas. He could reunite our fastly dividing fan base(IMO)

  176. Blake Blake says:

Yeah and think about how well an AAU, NCAA, and NBA champion could recruit.

    HELLO!

  177. Blake Blake says:

He needs some years at UCA of showing what he has though. Does anybody know how the Arkansas Baptist team has done under him?

  178. Big Boi Big Boi says:

I couldn’t agree more Blake. Do you know if Scotty Thurman is eligible to be a College assistant? I remember reading a couple years ago he was attending the UofA again. Could you Imagine Corliss as Head Coach and Scotty as his top assistant!

Can anyone honestly look at the job Pelphrey has done and think is capable of morphing somehow into a big time coach. I point you to Bob Knight’s comment early in the seaons on ESPN where he stated when you have a shooter like we do — how do you not set up an offense to get him open. Clark simply is not capable of creating open space between himself and his defender with a team offense set to make that happen. The problem is also Jeff Long. No history here of our once proud tradition. He does the easy thing and let’s Pel slide -FIRE THEM BOTH!!

You know, I’m just as much a Razorback fan as you, I grew up in this state and eventhough I moved to California, I will always be a hog for life because I’m originally from Texarkana, the home of the original Razorbacks, so don’t get it twisted. This is a sad performance by the hogs BB team. When I was a senior in high school, the hogs won the National Championship, prior to that the hogs were a top tier team nationally, no excuse, why cant we rekindle those days and times with a desire to be back on top like other Div. 1 teams who like to win. A REAL razorback fan would want this program to make tough decisions in the face of adversity to achieve success on the highest level, I mean just look at what Kentucky did? I know their coach has issues, but I know we would love to trade places with their team right now when you consider their record. We as RAZORBACKS fans should be outrage at the current leadership in place for the hogs BB team, if not than you have a problem. The hogs are in a mess and we should be outraged just like when Houston Nutt was at the helm and the football program was good but just couldn’t get over the hump due to a lack of balanced team. How soon we forget??????????????

  183. belpa zhog belpa zhog says:

MRPRFCT, I agree with you that Pel going from 2 SEC wins last year to 7 SEC wins this year is a BIG IMPROVEMENT. Yet we have postings here that says it is not an improvement. And we have Petrino lovers who want us to believe that Petrino going from 2 win, 6 losses to 3 wins, 5 losses, is a very huge and commendable improvement but dimissive of Pel’s improvements. We need to be fair and balanced in our assessment and we need to be factual.

  184. HOGen-Dazs HOGen-Dazs says:

Wow…once again the comparison to football. Unbelievable.

Just because it’s ridiculous to do this anyway…comparing the toughest division in BCS football to the weakest BCS division in basketball…I’ll just simply stick with basketball.

We sucked last year and we sucked this year…especially at the end of both years. The difference in 2 wins and 7 wins happens when…for one…all the other teams in your division suck for the most part. So there’s a better chance of winning ANY game in the SEC WEST.

But two…the West is worse this year than last year. Last year LSU was a very good team and the WEST sent TWO teams to the NCAA tournament. The WEST may not send ONE team this year. Right now Lunardi has both Ole Miss and Miss ST OUT.

So with LSU falling off the face of the earth and there being no real NCAA threat…and with Arkansas returning their best players…of course there was an increase in the win column. But it wasn’t because they made any real progress. You could look at the end of the year to see that. It’s because everybody else SUCKED!!

  185. PeytonHillisFTW PeytonHillisFTW says:

Miss State is the only SEC West team that made it past the second round of the SEC Tournament People!!!! And that was because they played Florida! The WEST IS SUPER WEAK.

“Wake up people! This stupid comparison between football and basketball has to stop.”

“Jim Harris gets it right in his arkansassports360 “Forty minutes of fail” article”.

That’s pretty stinkin weak, considering even Jim Harris understands “Forty minutes of hell” doesn’t exist without depth, experience, and leadership. Three things we temporarily don’t have.
Come on Dazs! I thought you came from a coaching family? Surely even you would disagree with that kind of garbage? I guess not.

Even the dumbest of dumb should be able to see improvement this season over last.
Even if LSU is much weaker, we still won multiple road games against Georgia and Ole Miss. We didn’t win a road game in 2 years before that, and you can’t say those teams were worse than they was last season. Hell, they’re probably better.
Georgia is very young, but a team on the rise, and Ole Miss got their PG back after an ACL injury before last season.
We also blew out a very talented SC squad at home this season. Something we wouldn’t have done last season. And even with our good teams in the past, we’ve never had that much sucsess in Tuscaloosa or Starksville, but we still played well enough overall to possibly win those games, or at least put ourselves in position. Even in those losses, we were still competitive.

The bottom line is our front court was ineffective and inconsistant in several games this season.
Was this the coaches fault? Well let’s see; Powell is a very talented Freshman, but still learning.
Washington is talented, but selfish, has no heart, and posesses absolutely no leadership skills.(For the confused, this means he doesn’t contribute the basic necessities for improved team cemistry) Sanchez is….well hell, he doesn’t play does he?

We could go on and on, but some people will just never get it.
With or without CJP, we weren’t going to be that good, but still improved with the experience we had coming back at the guard positions.
I don’t get where some of you guys are coming from. All I know is that I don’t wear rose colored glasses and I’m smart enough to read between the lines when need be.

In your post you conveniently cherry picked wins instead of including the horrible defeats. You also are very good at making excuses using the players as your skapegoat instead of anything that Pel might be at fault for doing.

You did not reference ONE single thing in your statement that Pel did wrong this season after his team…for the second straight year has had a losing record and no postseason play. TWO YEARS. Yet you couldn’t find yourself to come up with even ONE problem that might be Pel’s???????????????????????????????????????????????/

That in itself is extremely funny since you also referenced “rose colored glasses”.

Now see Gonzo I just retorted your post nice and easy. And I didn’t even have to call you the “dumbest of dumb” to make my point either.

  189. Paul Edwards Paul Edwards says:

Pel doesn’t do wrong – he doesn’t do anything.

His coaching style is put the guys on the court and hope for the best. If they players can figure a way to win, they win. If not, they lost.

    A REAL coach, please.
