better now than in Oct or something. good practice time for backups too.
Dang. Doesn’t really change my expectations for the season. Luckily it wasn’t his throwing arm or anything. I think he’ll be fine.
Amen to RJ and Andrew.
Good post about it by Chris Low. I like Chris, I don’t know why so many others don’t. He gives the Razorbacks props often.
http://espn.go.com/blog/sec/post/_/id/9042/malletts-break-not-a-terrible-break
That was a good article by Low. This will give Ryan plenty of time to study film, and it sure is better happening now than later on. Only a minor set back. I can not wait for fall!
I hate to see this happen, though as mentioned above, better now than next year. It should present a real opportunity, however, to develop some quality depth with the Razorback’s future quarterbacks – a very talented Tyler Wilson and Brandon Mitchell.
Also Jacoby Walker is going through Spring practice. Mallett of course is the big time Heisman candidate star. But Wilson, Mitchell and Walker aren’t too shabby behind him. Plus, they add mobility to the run/pass option that Petrino likes. Gonna be an interesting Spring.
I personally think that this will be good for our football team, not that I’m glad that Ryan is hurt, cause I’m definately not…but, I think that Tyler and whoever the number three is, getting all of those extra snaps and experience will only make us a better team.
This could be a blessing in disguise because now we get to find out who our number 2 will be with the battle between Mitchell and Wilson
im bummed. i was really hoping mallet would get to work on short routes and crossing routes this spring. for whatever reason he really struggles with those throws.
oh well i hope he figures it out this summer.
look forward to seeing wilson mitchell and walker as well
We would have found out who the number 2 was regardless. I don’t find this as a blessing in any form. We should be concerned. It’s not a given that Ryan will come back perfect this summer. This is bad news. Period.
he needs to work on the mental part of the game….maybe watching and coaching the others can help him
MRP is right on. I don’t care how good the player is everyone needs spring practice. Ryan still has many opportunities for improvement and having your starting QB miss spring ball does not make you a better football team. Watch film all you want there is no substitute for being on the field. I’m concerned.
Hope RM has a full recovery. Broken bones are always bad news, but I don’t think the sky is falling! It’s Feb., not July! Plenty of time to get through this injury and bounce back before fall camp.
Any word on how he broke it?
Sure beats him tearing an ACL in the RED/WHITE game doesn’t it?
I’m sure it wasn’t in Ballet class.
I hope he keeps hos weight in check and doesn’t end up at 280+ this summer. Also, the film room should be his best friend between now and then.
*his
This is bad news. Number 1 issue on Mallet is footwork. His inconsistent footwork directly leads to his erratic throws. He can make the most of this situation with some extensive film study. I still say we might see Mallett two more seasons. I for one wouldn’t be shocked if there is an NFL lockout for 2011. If they do like hockey there would be no draft…NFL owners don’t cut new deals in lockouts so he might be around for 2011. Expect to see many of the Jrs next season stay in school and not sign with an agent if no CBA is signed.
Sorry, he might be around for 2012.
at least mallett is a statue in the pocket, he doesnt need to run around all the time.
How exactly did he break his foot?
I had surgery on my foot. He should be ready closer to go in 3 months.
spring ball is more for younger players fighting for the opportunity to get practice time come fall. Wont hurt Mallet’s performance next year. The things he needs to work on can be hashed out in film room anyway.
MikeATL, not all breaks are the same…

Tyler, Chris Lowe is a “bandwagon guy” who jumped head on to the Ole Miss bandwagon last year, but then again, so did most of ESPN. Now he is jumping on to the Arkansas bandwagon.
He needed to work on his footwork.
ive seen mallett make some pretty damn good throws off of his back foot… just saying
I’m sure you’ve seen him make some terrible throws too.
Makes you wonder if this is correcting a pre-existing condition.
I agree…Mallett already has “slow” feet. This can only hurt. I do agree he has plenty of time to heal, but the practice he’ll miss wouldve been crucial to his improvement as a QB and our chances to become a force in the SEC…
that long touchdown throw against Florida comes to mind. WoW! I thought that was a sure pick when I saw him throw that off his back foot, but it was perfectly on target.
Theres plenty of room for improvement. Ask the NFL.
sure theres room for improvement, but come on guys. when was the last time an Arkansas QB threw 30 touchdowns and only 7 interceptions?
we should be fine, mallett has the will to recover quickly.
It’s not his will I’m concerned about. It’s those tiny bones in his foot. I’m not knocking Ryan, but look what he did against the best teams we faced.
I agree with MRP on this. Mallett still has alot of learning to do on the field. There will be some conditioning issues. I believe Mallett needs to work on his accuracy and touch. Footwork will help there. You can’t work on footwork in a cast.
There are alot of things you can learn in the film room but accuracy and touch are learned on the field.
Ron in Germany, are you saying you are making a deal with the devil?
I think this is more serious than most people want to believe.
Ryan’s feet are the most important part of his accuracy. He still needed a lot of work on using his feet to set up his shorter throws, instead of simply relying on his arm strength to always bail him out.
At 6’7″, his body is still raw at this stage, concerning his mobility and overall throwing consistantcy.
If this is going to be his breakout season, he needs to be on his feet making those needed correction.
Confidence is everything. We don’t need Ryan going into fall practce with a confidence problem. I’m very concerned.
Man, does this kid have some bad luck in the off-season or what?
At least it’s not his planting foot
I will say I have to agree with Simple Fan. This could turn out to be a blessing in disguise.
If I were one of the backup QBs right now, looking for an opportunity to make my mark on this team, this would be it.
If this doesn’t motivate them to go all out, leading up to the spring game, nothing will.
I garantee you, SEC defenses will be licking their chops to make a hit on Ryan Mallett this season. Make no mistake, he’ll be the #1 target in the SEC for those guys.
Remember what happened to a very mobile Colt McCoy in the NC game?
Alabama’s Marcel Darius was only a Soph. when he made that hit.
Don’t think he won’t have that in the back of his mind when he enters RRS this fall. He’s looking to go pro after his Jr. season too.
The point I’m trying to make here, is that the more improvement our backups stride for right now, the better off we’ll be later on.
If Ryan just happens to go down during the regular season, we’d better have someone capable of stepping into that role.
yes Gonzo, but this is the year we need everything to align right.
i want to be good in future too, but we need to take every opportunity we have to win as many games as possible with Mallett this season and this schedule, there may be a dropoff in win totals the year after he leaves
Conditioning is my only real concern. He may have room for improvement, but there isn’t a player out there looking to get in (or already in) the NFL that doesn’t have room for improvement. The physical tools are there, and he can already make all the throws…film study will only help his decision making, which was the biggest thing he needed to work on this offseason, IMO. The games mrp allude to from last season weren’t all on him. There were plenty of things that jumped out to me(defense)in those games, and they weighed much heavier in the W/L column than Ryan’s performance.
Stay on the stationary bike and swimming pool Ryan. Continue to be a vocal leader on the sidelines this spring, and we wish you a speedy recovery!
It wasn’t the defense in the Alabama and LSU games. Guys, it’s not a given that he fully recovers by this summer. I’m hopeful he does, but let’s not blow this broken foot off like it’s a papercut.
Peyton,
I have no idea what your point is. So your saying the backups stepping up their game this spring isn’t important?
No one is talking about a paper cut here that I have read.
Quote Chicken Little, “The sky is falling. The sky is falling”!!!!!
I really don’t think this is the end of the world. Mallet is no doubt an incredible QB. He was 5* guy out of high school, is a Heisman candidate, and last year his numbers were insane (except when he faced a real SEC defense and on the road). His rehab time will definitely cut into his much needed footwork development and timing; however, one of his biggest problems last year was reading quality defenses…at times, he was so mentally unprepared that he would always resort back to the 100 mph fast ball (either too deep or too harder on the intermidate routes). Confidence is obtained from not just playing against good competition, but from knowing what defenses are going to do in certain situations…ala Peyton Manning. Manning is a stud QB and is one of the most naturally gifted players ever. However, that guy not only spends hours and hours in the film room, but he is always looking at the game film after any particular series. Mallet needs to spend the next few months becoming a student of the game. If he makes the most out of this opportunity, come August he will definitely be a more complete QB…In the meantime, Wilson and Mitchell will get awesome reps and experience…Thus, giving us two quality back-ups for our 2010 National Championship run.
Ron in Germany, are you saying you are making a deal with the devil?

———————————————-
Whats your point ?
We can all study film enough to read every defense there ever was, but that’s not going to make any of us a Heisman caliber QB. Yes, he needs to be in the film room but you’re kidding yourself if you don’t think this hurts his development.
Don’t get me wrong, I do think it hurts his development. However, you are grossly under-estimating film study. Sure anyone can study film, but ‘students of the game’ study film to increase their reaction time to certain situations the defenses present. Thus, improving their confidence to deliver certain throws. Mallet definitely needs this, instead of relying on his fastball when he’s confused…
LOL I don’t Ryan lacks any confidence in delivering certain throws.
Gonzo im just saying this is our year.
All I’m saying is that Ryan wasn’t the only one responsible for those losses and that defense jumps out as contributing factor in most of those. You can cherry pick whatever games you want, but if he even makes it back to where he was physically last season and can improve his checks and decision making, he will improve. I disagree also with your assesment of what makes a “Heisman caliber QB”. Manning is not the most gifted athlete, but he puts in more time with off field preparation than most and it IS why he has success.
I think we will see a greater focus on the running game this spring with the additions we made on the coaching staff as apposed to last year. Everyone will be fearing our passing attack, but we will put away many games because of an improved running attack next season, imo.
When he’s confused, he throws the fastball. If he was confident he would throw a more catchable ball.
His weakness isn’t reading defenses. He only threw 7 picks. His weakness was throwing a catchable ball. I’m not saying he doesn’t need film study. I’m saying he needs to work on his footwork and can’t because of this injury.
I think we’re all starting to get off-track here.
First of all, the only point I’m trying to make, is Ryan needs to be executing throws this spring and already be carrying momentum into the fall.
Coming back to practice in the middle of June won’t help his confidence with accuracy by any stretch of the imagination. He needs his feet underneath him first.
He didn’t improve during last season by mending a broken foot and watching film. He did it by watching film, getting his reps and learning from his mistakes in games.
There’s no substitute for practice/repetition and conditioning.
I also think the fastball comes with confusion which developes from not knowing what to do if certain situations happen; he therefore gets nervous and pulls the trigger. He will gain confidence when he knows what to expect and what to do when certain situations occur; this comes with film sudy and looking back at when and why he panicked and then figuring out what he should have done instead of firing the typical fastball. This can be solved with a lot of now available film time and some different options that Petrino can develope and explain to him, but certainly not more repetitive foot work.
You have to give those SEC defenses some credit, and not put all the blame on Mallett.
No way in the world does this help us. Mallett’s arm is not a question, but he badly needs improvement in his footwork, short passing game and to some degree in his decision making. No amount of watching film helps out there.
Hey Kajon,
You new on the blog? Gonna be here long?
Or did you just drop in just this once to agree with MrP?
I agree, Peyton. I’ve said all along the improvement of our O-line this season will determine how good Ryan’s going to be.
If their improvement is very little, his improvement will be very little. Same goes for the RBs.
We make way too much out of Ryan’s God given talents. If they’re not put to good use consistantly, what good are they?
I’ve been around since Richard started this, OK. Just don’t comment much.
I disagreed with much MRP. had to say, but here lately he makes more sense than most others.
When was the last time you commented or have you ever commented before this time?
I have commented a few times before but don’t really remember exactly when the last time was or what it was about.
My main interest in this site is the info by Richard. He’s the best.
You’re exactly right, Gonzohog.
Kajon, he thinks you’re me. Everytime anyone ever agrees with me he thinks I made them up.
Guys, get a grip on it. We don’t have a choice in this. Mallett injured his leg. That’s the facts.
Now how does Petrino make the most of this unfortunate situation? I trust Petrino to practice backup QBs best. I count on Petrino to have Mallett in the film room or where ever.
But we can’t moan and groan over spilt milk and get anywhere. The questions for the coaches are being answered as some on here cry that the sky is falling.
Get a grip people. Accept reality and move on in the best way possible. Trust the coaches and other players.
So you didn’t just sign up for that one comment? Oooookay?
He has accused me of the same thing Kajon, many times. Funny thing is OKOFCOURSE is nowhere to be found when i post comments that disagree with MR P.
He is kind of a conspiracy theorist and his logic is derived from that mind set. Pay him no mind.
It may take me a while but I’ll figure this out. I’m good at puzzles!!!
By the way Peyton you popped up just like kajon. HERE HE COMES TO SAVE THE DAY!!!!!
I would have thought more on this board would understand the benefit of the mental game as it relates to sports. Any “extra” time spent studying film and CBPs system is time well spent. Remember the summer freethrow experiment from several years ago?
Don’t get me wrong, having and developing physical tools is very important…however, you can’t discount the value of developing the mental aspect of the game. Ryan Leaf
Since Ryan M. can’t fully participate in the physical development this spring, he has an opportunity to up his game in other areas. Unless something goes terribly wrong with his recovery, I just don’t see his physical tools degrading to a point of concern, just MO.
Good Point WPSGHG,
I know I’ve already said this before but I’m trying to make friends now. I have alienated a lot of people here and I need some references when I write a new book on how to make friends and influence people.
Good show OKOFCOURSE, delightful humorous comment about your new book.
You have a much better sense of humor that many of the other posters that some claim you really are. I think your humor stands alone.
Thanks HonestAbeHog,
I needed that. By the way does anyone miss RazorRandy besides me? I wish Richard would invite him back or am I alone on this?
I think everyone is so spoiled by RMs big arm that they forget we have some quality guys behind RM. Sure we all would rather RM get the most out of the off season, but it ain’t gonna happen for him. He’s gonna miss the spring and that’s just the way it is. Sucks for sure, but it’s not the end of the world. Wilson can still stretch the field. Not like RM to be sure. I trust CBP to use his offense to the best of his players abilities. If the best guy is better at short passes then he’ll find a way to get the ball out on short passes. I’m also onboard with the folks banking on an improved run game. I really believe that run game will be on point and efficient this season. If RM isn’t ready come September, TW or BM will take over and do just fine. They were going to have to get some gametime sooner or later anyway. Again, I’m def hoping that RM is 110% come September. I’m also hoping he didn’t waste his NFL opportunity. Best of luck to you RM on a speedy and full recovery. GO HOGS!!!!!!
Guys we are 7 months away from football season. I know this injury isn’t great but even if it takes the full 4 months to recover he still has 3 months to work on getting into shape and fine tuning his game. He will miss spring ball but will have plenty of time to prep for the fall. It isn’t like you are trying to fix everything like the trainers are with Tebow going into the combines.
good comments Charles “Stark.
I’m not sure how important spring ball is for Ryan’s development at this point after 2-3 years under Petrino’s tutelage.
Spring ball is however, very important for the development of they younger players. It is something that can separate the wheat from the chaff.
FYI, Ronnie Brewer traded to Memphis. Welcome home, Ronnie! Sort of.
I’ve been looking at past blog titles and have found one of my few comments. It’s posted Feb.12 @ 1:25PM under “Punter wants to Prove Himself”.
BTW I’ve been a Hog Fan much longer than MRP. Probably before he was born. The first Razorback autograph I ever got was from Clyde Scott in his senior year.
I apologize; I went back and read that post and I not only do I remember it but totally agree with what you said about the Baylor Coach, Grant Teaff. They in deed did play dirty!!!
Hey guys looks like some good talk going on today.
Take a look at my Ryan Mallet injury reaction story.
I am with you guys. I think this could be a blessing in disguise in some ways, but you hate to have it happen.
My question is: How will this affect the Spring game attendance?
For any of you who were going are you still planning on attending the spring game? I think this makes the spring game more intriguing for me and I know I will be in the stands watching the future Hogs QB’s! I want to see how Wilson, Mitchell and Walker will be fun to watch. My early pick is that Mitchell ends up running the 1st team offense (and that in no way is a knock on Wilson, I think they will both be good QB’s for us).
What say ye?
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
What I meant was:
“I want to see how Wilson, Mitchell and Walker will look come Spring game”
WOW, that wasn’t even close….*FAIL*
Proof-reading is our friends which reminds me kids “Don’t do crack….”
I am right there with you. I think this will be a great chance for the QB race to start heating up early for 2011, and I also think it is going to be Mitchell. The coaches just always say such good things about him, and his size and athleticism is unbelievable.
But to answer your question I think it will likely lower the attendance a little bit, because a lot of people want to see Mallett.
Hopefully the weather is better at the spring game this year, and more people come out. This could be the Hogs year and the fans need to be right there every step up the way rocking the house!
i really dont think it will lower attendance at all. people have already seen mallett and know how good he is, they will be interested in seeing more about his backups.
JMO, and TBOOT
The coaches wanted to spend more time on the running game and this makes it easier. The new O-line coach can really work on run blocking without everybody saying, we have the best QB in the country why aren’t we useing him more.
I am sorry Mallet is hurt and won’t get the benefit of spring practice; however, I think the extra study will help him. The main thing he needs to learn is to take what the defense gives him and not force the ball down the field when he has wide open short receivers. The whole organization needs to learn that you have to attempt running plays to develope a running game.
I will be at the spring game again this year and I hope to see a much improved defense.
Everyone seems to be focusing only on Mallet’s development, but I’m just as concerned with how it will effect our receivers. With the strength of his arm, a received has to spend a lot of time learning how to catch his passes. Spring practice would have greatly helped our receivers get better at catching his passes. Now they spend all spring catching from Wilson and Mitchell, then back to Mallet’s passing the fall. At the same time I agree with others that there is a silver lining in that the backups get the reps in the spring.
good point, LAHog
Real good point, LAHog.
Without Mallet last year our season would have been about the same as the previous year. His talents improved our teams offense enough to overcome problems on defense in most games except those games against the better defenses. This set back will hurt our offensive passing game, but for this team to become what all of want and thats to win the big games we have to improve on defense and especially in our running game. Third down stats will improve along with controlling the clock. Just a decent running game and good defense to go along with our passing game would make us awesome.
LAHog’s point is a great one, but I believe that aspect will only have an impact on the new arrival receivers. Not to overly downplay it, but the receivers that are used to his throws shouldn’t have a big problem. Hopefully, once he is back to health he’ll have time to work on making his throws a little more catchable for everyone (on our team!!).
Having said that, sometimes you just have zip it and hope your guy can make the play. It’s nice to have his ability to do that going for us.
