BRAD HEFLEY
TE – FR – 6-4 –250 – Joplin, Mo. (Joplin Senior HS)

Petrino’s Take: “He is a tight end/defensive end, he played both. When we actually started recruiting him he was a middle linebacker and a tight end, a very good football player. He’s gotten big. Again, we had Brad in camp. He spent a lot of time down here, he’s been to a lot of our meetings and he’s come to as many home games as he could. He’s just a guy I think that has endless potential.”

This is one of the kids in this recruiting class I see as very under-rated.
Scout had him rated as a 3 star MLB recruit. I also remember reading an article about Hefley once that mentioned his only knock as a MLB was that he sometimes over-pursued the ball carrier because he is such an aggresive football player.
At 6’4″, 250 lbs., I think this kid could be another Jake Bequette with a couple of good years in the weight room.

  2. PK PK says:

i agree gonzo…i think he has run into the same problem much of the AR kids have in that he is from a small town/school so the recruiting services will refuse to rank him above a 3*

I will say that i think many of the kids we signed that are LB/DE types will give BP and co many sleepless nights about just where to play them. Though I believe hefley and chris smith and potentially gaston depending on how much weight he puts on during his RS year could end up at DE…but imagine those 3 plus J Lake at LB..that is some serious length and size.

  3. SOUTHARKHOGFAN SOUTHARKHOGFAN says:

Yeah Gonzo, Everything I read and video I watch on him is great. He is a good old fashion hardnosed, gritty, physical, get your hands dirty throwback type with great measurables. Like Ron in Jord…oops…..Germany said, every team needs a few FOOTBALL players! He will surely find a place on this team and be an assett. I think he could be very underrated also. Very happy to have him on the team, he seems to be sold out to the Hogs.

  4. Blake Blake says:

I also think he is going to be a DL. I am excited about all the players we got that project to the Dline: Chris Smith, Brad Hefley, Jeremiah Jackson, Calvin Barnett, Byran Jones, LaCraig Brown, and Jatashun Beachum according to some folks.

I still think Beachum ends up on offense, but you just never know.

All these guys are big. Smith is a rush end with great size and speed that can make an impact right away.

Hefley is a versatile athlete that could end up on the offensive side.

Jackson is a big quick lineman that will likely spend time at end before gaining enough size to move inside, but from what I last heard he is a lean big man that has put on size over the year. 270 or so is pretty big for coming into the weight program with.

Word is Brown is in the mid 280s, so same thing there. He is going to be really big in no time!

Jones and Barnett have that rare blend of size and athleticism that makes top notch DT so hard to find. The fact we got two in this class is unbelievable and the main reason this DT haul is considered one of the top 5 in the nation.

Come September the Razorbacks defensive front line is going to look the part of a SEC bunch with depth to match. I am very excited about this, and can’t wait until Spring and Summer practices to get a look at everybody we have coming back and the new guys coming in.

    Woo Pig Sooie!!

Hey Blake, I have been out of pocket for awhile. What is the address to your website? I would like to check it out.
    Thanks!

  6. Blake Blake says:

Let me know what you think SAHF.

Things are going so well for the Hogs on all fronts right now. I can’t wait until the baseball team gets going, I hope the basketball team continues to roll, I am excited about the golf team this year and their prospects of being solid again, and football needs to hurry up and get here.

Also I can’t wait to see all the new Nike gear the Hogs teams will be sporting next year.

  7. Razorback Roger in Florida Razorback Roger in Florida says:

From the get go, the first time I read about Hefley, I kept seeing hin as a middle linebacker with an attitude LOL….I still think that he can do that spot in a big way. But, that is up to the coaches not me.
He is a superb athlete, very much under rated. So glad to have him on our team.

  8. Blake…At the Razorback club event in Little Rock last, they listed Brown at 288.

Richard. Do you think they will leave Brown at end or will they move him inside to tackle?

  9. In the last comment I meant to say last thursday…sorry

  10. codehog codehog says:

example of a kid that looks like both parents :)

  11. Blake Blake says:

Yeah I remember seeing Petrino say that last week. I couldn’t remember if it was mid or upper 280s.

Just remember that Sheppard was not over 290 until this year. He was like 288 or just at 290 his junior year.

So this kid already has nearly that size, and Jackson is not terribly to far behind though he does have a way to go.

So that is three big big DL coming in that can completely change the look of our front line.

I can’t wait to see how these guys come in and push the players in front of them, and how the players on campus come back looking after another great offseason workout program with Veltkamp.

    Iron Hogs baby…Iron Hogs!

  15. GonzoHog GonzoHog says:

It’s good to know these recruits have good size, but I do have to wonder just what kind of size we’re actually talking about here.
“Big Tex” was said to be at 306 lbs. now, but is that solid weight or could that be a result of taking a couple of official visits and being feed well while being there?
In addition to that, I wonder just how much these kids are really paying attention to staying in shape, with all the recruiting attention they’ve been recieving since they last played a high school football game?

I’m not trying to derail anyone from being optimistic about our new young recruits, but I do believe we should be careful about getting too excited over their increased weights at this point.

Depends on how much bigger he gets. LaCraig has the frame to add more weight.

  17. debunker debunker says:

What impresses me is how athletic these guys are; they are big, tall, fast and can jump have great personalities are smart and have good character.

  18. cdavidson Richard Davenport says:

    I really like Brad’s future. He’s a slim 250 or so.

He’ll start out at tight end. He’s guy that can block and catch equally well.

    GonzoHog,
I am not sure about the others, but CBP said that LaCraig Brown was lifting weights when they arrived for a visit the week before signing day. I think Big Tex has a Charles Barkley/Oliver Miller type body and is really going to have to work hard to stay in playing shape.

  22. Blake Blake says:

The players are given a special diet and workout plan to follow by our staff. If they want to come in ready and to compete they will be following that to the T.

I remember last year something Richard posted about Brandon Mitchell, and how he was doing all of those things and then beyond with his personal workout goals. That is why I have been so high on him since the beginning.

We need all of our kids to want to work hard and put in the blood, sweat, and tears. That is what wins championships. If our kids work harder than big time recruits coming out of high school, then they have the opportunity to excel further on the field and in their lives.

  23. GonzoHog GonzoHog says:

I agree with you on Big Tex, oldhog.

    Richard,

Do you have any insight on Big Tex? I’m wondering if he’ll actually start out at RB with all the weight he’s recently gained?
I know he’s supposed to be a great athlete, but if he’s truly going to start out at RB and he’s currently weighing in at 306, how much weight would he have to lose to be effective?
With the depth we already have at RB, a redhirt year is looking more and more likely. Thoughts?

  24. Jerry Williams Jerry Williams says:

    Richard,

I don’t know if you have any idea or not, but in your opinion do you think Byran Jones and Barnett will qualify? Is there any kind of perception on the other guys in the class, as far as qualifying goes?

  25. fliphog fliphog says:

according to tex’s high school coach, arkansas wants him down to around 255lbs to play running back. he is on a diet and working out with the track coach

  26. GonzoHog GonzoHog says:

I’ll be rooting for him. He ran a 4.65-40 time at 265 lbs. in high school, so that makes perfect sense to me. Thanks fliphog.

  27. fliphog fliphog says:

more on tex: His high school coach said that at 255 -260 this guys speed and agility will be astounding. he sees him as a perfect fit to line up and run the wildhog like Mcfadden

  28. Big Boi Big Boi says:

Gonzo, The odds seem to be against Big Tex playing RB. If he is 306 he needs to lose 60 lbs and maintain his muscle. His redshirt year will determine his position. I hate to call him lazy cause I don`t know the kid and don`t want to insult him. But he let it known before his senior year he wanted to play RB in college and he didn`t get himself in shape. Coach Veltkamp is one of the best in the business I hope he can get the Big man where he wants to be. As for Brad Hefley he`ll start at TE but with Chris Cragg on campis and Demetrius Dean coming in two years I see him being moved to Defense(and he looks like an in-shape 250 from the pics). He could play DE, DT or LB. Most likely a 6`4 275ish DE(IMO)

  29. Big Boi Big Boi says:

Fliphog, Is just me or we the only team in the country that didn`t run the “wildhog” last year?

  30. fliphog fliphog says:

your right. I have often wondered if petrino does not run it because it is from the last regime or maybe we just do not have the personnel at this time.

  31. Matt Matt says:

Richard, at this point which Defensive players have to biggest hurdles academically?

I hear that there may be a couple guys that may have too much to overcome and will be in JC next season. Do you feel like both Jones and Barnett will be on campus next fall?

    thanks, Matt

  32. Simple Fan Simple Fan says:

Maybe we don’t run the wildhog because we don’t have need to run it. Our offensive numbers are pretty good without it and why would we take the ball out of Mallett’s hands

  33. PK PK says:

simple fan has the right of it…

why run the a gimmick offense (wildcat) if you can throw the ball like mallett to receivers like ours. Most teams that end up running the wildcat (like the Dmac/Felix hawgs) are one dimensional running offenses that need to create running lanes.

I personally can not wait to see what our new OL coach will come up with the improve our running game…oh the possiblities.

Also has anyone heard of any new 2010 BBall prospects looking harder at the hawgs now that we have shown to be on the upswing???

  34. Big Boi Big Boi says:

Simple Fan, That would be my guess. Keep the ball in Mallets hands. If we did run it I`d say let Dennis Johnson or Joe Adams line up at QB and let Wingo be the motion man(we wants to take everything outside anyway)

  43. tomt58 tomt58 says:

Personally I would like to see Brad at ML. I really like Jerry out on the edge, and I think we have some good DE comming back. Brad has the size to help secure that middle and stuff the run. He is tall with will cause some problems for quarterbacks to dump it to their TE over the middle. That is a play that hurt Arkansas several times last year.

  44. Ron in Germany Ron in Germany says:

Mitchell decided to walk on at Kansas St., turning down some offers from other smaller schools. Illinois had pulled his offer.
johnson is planning on pro baseball. He is sure to be drafted pretty high. Haskell will be going to one of the Kansas JUCOs, not sure which one.

  52. GonzoHog GonzoHog says:

I’ve been wondering about the possibility of B. Hefley winding up at MLB. I realize that with D.J. Williams and Ben Cleveland leaving after next season, we’ll have to take a good look at him as a TE, but with C. Gragg coming back, Uekman coming in and possibly D. Dean coming in 2011, I think he could very well end up at MLB or DE, depending on how much bigger he gets.
Considering he’s already 6’4″, carrying an in shape 250+, he’ll more than likely put on more muscle in the weight room.
I see him as a future TE or DE. Probably can’t go wrong with either one, depending on what our team needs are.

  53. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

Don’t forget Austin Tate at TE. I’d really love to see Hefley at DE.

  54. Ron in Germany Ron in Germany says:

I remember Petrino being quoted last summer as saying: We are only looking to sign 1 TE. I guess well see.

  55. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

I love that Pelphrey is our coach.

“There were standards of being a Razorback that weren’t met,” Pelphrey said. “I have tremendous respect and honor being the head coach here. I couldn’t be more happy for who I work for — Chancellor [David] Gearhart and [athletic director] Jeff Long. I just really appreciate them.”

  56. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

    And this quote

“I know who we’ve recruited, and I know how we’re going about it and what we place a value on,” Pelphrey said. “I understand the value of going to school and being a student-athlete and mastering those. We’ve got a great foundation to build on what the Razorbacks have done in the past.”

    MRPRFCT,

I do too! I think I was one of the first to defend Pelphrey a couple of weeks ago when several on this blog were calling for him to be fired. I think we have a guy that will build a solid winning program and do it the right way.

  59. poch punt poch punt says:

It’s nicee to have impact players out of highschool, but I believe a year of redshirting as many as possible pays bigger dividends for a team. Teams fortunate enough to recruit a five star usually feel compelled to play them immediately or risk loosing a year if the player pans out and elects to go pro. I don’t know all the redshirts coming in next year. Austin Tate looks like he could be a real good possession receiver. Hefley probably needs a year to identify postion.

  60. GonzoHog GonzoHog says:

MRPRFCT was right about Austin Tate. I had completely forgotten about him.
This is a good problem to have at that position. I like the chances of Brad Hefley winding up at DE.

I also like our 2 new “super athletes”, Daunte Carr and Jarrett Lake.
Carr could play either FS or SS, and with some added muscle, I like Lake’s chances of becoming a very good OLB.

The coaches definately went after longer and faster athletes this year.

  61. GonzoHog GonzoHog says:

Does anyone know how long Mike Washington looks to be out with a high ankle sprang? I hear those things usually take a few weeks.

  62. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

I like those two guys also, Gonzohog. I see Carr as a physical hitter in the Ken Hamlin mode. Jarrett Lake can be one of those LBs that can fly sideline-to-sideline.

  63. Ron in Germany Ron in Germany says:

Gonzo, I heard Pelphrey say today Washington got kicked in the shin. Not a high ankle sprain I first thought it was. He should be able to play sooner, rather than later.

  64. Ron in Germany Ron in Germany says:

I’m headed for bed guys. Later !

  65. GonzoHog GonzoHog says:

That’s good news on Washington. We need all the depth we can get going down the SEC stretch.

I also think LSU will give us their best shot come Wed. night. It always seems to happen that way when your on top of the div. this time of year.
We’ll have to fight our way to the end.

We did have a fantastic recruiting year last year and a lot of those guys were red shirted. That means they will be stepping up and will be ready to contribute. Austin Tate, Ryan Calendar,Darius Winston, Travis Swanson, David Gordon, Jerry Mitchell, Lance Ray, Brandon Mitchell,Colton Nash and Austin Moss. All these guys will make a difference. Some like Moss and Terrel Williams will most likely start.
Things are definately going in the right direction. Go Hogs Go !!

  70. joshua joshua says:

I, too, like the idea of redshirting as many as possible. That gives them a year for Veltkamp to get ahold of them and to learn CBP’s system and style.

I’m just not sure that I would have gone out and announced my desire to redshirt as many players in this class as possible like CBP did. Granted, he’s a great D1 coach and I’m at home on a cheap computer. But these days many of the so called “top recruits” are primarily wanting Playing Time and they want it early. I thought that we might have weakened our chances with some of the “big dog” recruits when CBP made that statement on TV.

Having said that, I’m really looking forward to seeing the players we did get step on the field and play like a bunch of wild razorback hogs!!!

  71. GonzoHog GonzoHog says:

I’m looking forward to seeing what some of these redshirts can do too.
Our depth and experience on the defensive side of the ball should be much improved.
Travis Swanson had already turned into a beast before he signed with last year’s class.
Ryan Calendar has the size and athletic ability to be a good DE with some added muscle weight.
Austin Moss has good instincts and was already well coached from being a coaches son. He’ll get better in the weight room too.
The same goes for Terrell Williams. He just needs to get bigger.
Lance Ray was a 4.3-40 guy that muscled up to 207 before he reshirted last year.
Darius Winston and David Gordon should be ready to step up a notch in their 2nd season.

    I’m excited about our future!

Ole Miss is ranked no. 17, Arkansas is ranked 48. That’s a pretty big gap for one player. I know they had a couple graded at 6, but I’m starting to get pretty excited about the big uglies that we recruited with this class. Who cares if Courtney Gatson was a 3 star recruit? Big Boi,

Thanks for the link you posted last night.

I noticed something interesting I wasn’t aware of. Curtis Luper, who I had never heard of before until now, is getting credit for landing M. Dyer.
I was under the impression all this time that Gus Malzahn was his lead recruiter.
I guess you learn something new every day.

  91. GonzoHog GonzoHog says:

    Firehouse,

Let’s all hope Weston’s bloodlines kick into high gear. If they do, I think our future at punter will be just fine.
Sometimes, walkons turn out to be the best weapons.

  92. Matt Matt says:

Bottom line if we had not pull two DTs at the last minute, our class would have been considered a complete failure. There would have not been a SINGLE positive writeup one this class. Defensive line was above and beyond the most critical position and he hit HRs on the last day. Well, turns out Calvin was actually in the bag way before Jones was. That is the funny thing about it.
    Go Hogs!

  93. GonzoHog GonzoHog says:

    Blake,

Thanks for the links. I think most of our best recruits are a little under-rated.
I don’t know what’s up with the recruiting services this year, but when you look at our recruits individual profiles, then compare them to other individual profiles from classes ranked higher, there doesn’t seem to be very much difference at all.

Like I’ve mentioned before, I can see where Scout, Rivals and ESPN’s evaluators are spot on with their top 15 to 20 recruits, but after that, it starts to get really fuzzy. They all look pretty much the same to me.

  94. Big Boi Big Boi says:

Gonzo, I agree after the top 20-50 or so recruits in the country there isn`t much difference in the next 200. Players in the bigger markets usaly get the benefit of doubt over the other kids(money). And with Arkansas class this year we had a bunch of ATH. I feel if these kids high school positions would have projected into where they`d play in college they would have been ranked higher.

Mississippi ST just hired Manny Diaz from Middle Tenn ST to be D-Coordinator. He also Hired Chris Wlson from Oklahoma to be CO-D Coordinator. Being from NE Ark I do watch some Sun-Belt football(I know its not even close to SEC) and Manny Diaz is a coach on the rise. Dan Mullen is really going to make some noise at Miss St in the next couple of years. Here is a link to the hire

  100. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

Yea, I’ve been reading where Walt Williams, president and CEO of Pinnacle Preps, is steering kids to Auburn. He apparently played for Malzahn. He “found” Kiehl Frazier at West Fork as a 9th grader. There are pictures of him with Mosley, Frazier, Harvill at a Jordan-Hare locker room.

  101. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

oh, and Malzahn is in the photo too.

  102. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

And guess who his featured prospect is on his website? michael dyer

  103. MikeATL MikeATL says:

Frazier and Harvill……. future Aubies. I wouldn’t waste time on them.

  104. Blake Blake says:

Guys. I wouldn’t start the lets not recruit these guys they are going to Auburn nonsense again.

Frazier has talked about how much he likes the Hogs and Coach McGee on record. He has a very good relationship, and just a month ago his father came on here and set that straight as well with some people that were talking the same mess.

The Hogs need to land this kid if you ask me. I know we have Allen committed, but Frazier is very important as well. They both got early offers and they are both very very much wanted.

Also remember that Byran Jones was in a picture with Dyer and Mosley wearing an Auburn jersey on their Facebook pages, but he is a Hog now!

  105. Hog Fan Hog Fan says:

Everyone keeps talking about this Walt guy getting on message boards and badmouthing petrino. I have yet to find out what actually happened. Can someone shed some light on the circumstance and if it happened like they say, why is this guy still allowed around our program?

  106. bob l bob l says:

Frazier seems to be a pretty big Hog fan, and Petrino is a great QB coach. I say he’ll be a Hog.

  107. Blake Blake says:

I don’t know that he is allowed around our program. I have heard all kinds of things that I do not know if they are true or not about this guy.

Most of the bad mouthing of him that I have seen was on Hogville.

If anyone knows anything certain or has links let me know. Otherwise I am just going to assume he is a recruit promoter that is unliked, but I think he is the only big one in Arkansas.

If people don’t like him then somebody needs to start their own promotion service and try to win the kids over to not go to this guy.

  108. ron johnson ron johnson says:

Blake , very, very good point about frazier and harvill!!!! We want them to be
future HOGS! Arkansas has a lot of super ath for 2011=we need to get all we
can–anyone that reads this site should never read negative things about oneself==
it does make a difference even if we are not a coach–WE ARE HOG FANS!!!

  109. GonzoHog GonzoHog says:

Doesn’t this “promotion” thing fall under the same catagory as what the N.C. State student did, concerning the basketball recruitment of John Wall?
Didn’t he basically promote for John Wall to commit to N.C. State?

The NCAA then pushed/handcuffed/threatened the school to shut him and his promotion website down, claiming it was going against NCAA rules of recruiting conduct.

Is it just me missing somthing or is this the exact same thing?

  110. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

Shiloh Christian has already been reprimanded by the AAA because of Walt Williams.

  111. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

Walt Williams played for Gus Malzahn. He loves him! He accompanies players on unofficial visits. He went to Notre Dame with Frazier to watch them play USC AND to a junior day event at Auburn.

  112. Hog Fan Hog Fan says:

I’d still be interested in hearing what Walt said on the message boards about Petrino. He was on the Rivals board last night trying to ask forgiveness from the fans on that site and they hammered him.

  113. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

Now I know why Petrino stayed away from Dyer. Walt Williams is Dyer’s “agent”.

  114. GonzoHog GonzoHog says:

    MRPRFCT,

Please explain what you mean by Shiloh being reprimanded.
What did Walt Williams do? This is all new stuff to me.

  115. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

He brought other schools’ athletes to Shiloh’s field to film them for his website. That’s a violation.

  116. Matt Matt says:

I would STILL like to know where Jones and Barnett stand academically.
Does anyone have any idea if either one has a passing core average to this point and if either has taken act/sat and if so are they even close to qualifying?
Give me some sort of idea! A percentage, a quess!
    Thank you!

  117. WE arent getting both Frazier and Allen, IMO. Because we will probably recruit even more QBs out of state.

They dont want to sit on the bench for 4 years.

  118. Matt, I would give it a rest. Stop F’ing worrying about their academics. Its useless. Its up to U of A Academic advisors to figure that out.

  119. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

There’s competition at all the big-time schools.

  120. Mr P, kids are willing to take the risk of competing for starting jobs at top 5 programs like USC. They are not as willing to do that at Arkansas, and I don’t blame them.

We have a healthy level of competition already, even if we only get one of those guys – Frazier or Allen.

  121. Wastehog Wastehog says:

My opinion on dealing with PP and the players they repersent is, deal with the players directly and keep away from PP and there repersentives.

The reason I’m leary has nothing to do with Walt but simply that if we start winning big the NCAA, SEC and the Big SIX in the SEC will be looking at us under a mircoscope to find infractions.

Do you think for a moment that these old timer of the SEC want Arkansas to become a National Power? I would hate for Arkansas to be used as a scapegoat for the first investagation the NCAA makes and the ruling and infractions that go along with that when they decide to pull the plug on these agencies(agents).

  122. GonzoHog GonzoHog says:

Interesting MRPRFCT. I’ll be keeping tabs on that storey. Thanks for the info.

  123. Matt Matt says:

Peyton there could end up being a huge difference between the two and we may not have the best one(commited). I would treat KF like we have NO QBs on scholi. You can’t be defeatest in recruiting.

And I won’t stop asking about our best two recruits we pulled in on the last day of recruiting. Some of you that are so giddy about this class haven’t even thought about “what if neither have a core of over 2.2 and have standing test scores of 15″. It would be pretty much a waste of time to have signed either one of them if they are miles from qualifying.
I’ve seen grades/tests of many of our other signees but haven’t seen much if anything on Jones/Barnett.

  124. Wastehog Wastehog says:

PW, That is a big problem with perception. Thinking that going to a top 5 program is an automatic entry into the NFL. I’ll bet that the percentages of former four and five star athletes that fail to make the NFL from a top five program is much greater the the one or two that start at a lower teir program. You see them all over NFL rosters and the reason is you get exposure for being a star not riding the bench. The exposure at Arkansas as a star is much greater than riding the bench at USCw. The problem is perception and I know some kids get it. Some never will.

  125. Razorback Roger in Florida Razorback Roger in Florida says:

OYE… too early to think about 1011 schollies in such depth…we need stories on what is happening now at the U of A…ie…training, time trials, prospective depth charts etc. IMO

  126. GonzoHog GonzoHog says:

I couldn’t agree more, Wastehog. Good point.
Hopefully, CBP is doing just that, because something tells me he’s a lot smater than to get caught up in all that jazz.

Remember the mess with the Alabama coaches and Tenessee’s Phil Fulmer?
They were P.O.’d that ‘ol “Fat Phil” had something to say about the way they recruited top DT Albert Means (I think that’s right) out of Memphis.
Memphis has been a strong recruiting stomping ground for Tennessee in years past.

  127. I don’t disagree wastehog, im just saying the QB competition at Arkansas is getting increasingly crowded.

  128. Ima Hawg Ima Hawg says:

MRP, I’m glad you have awakened to the situation with Dyer and involving Shiloh. This is why insiders in High School football in Arkansas have such a hard time with what is going on at the private schools. They are being used as prep schools. It may not be illegal but it sure is on the gray edges and worth some scrutiny. These guys have “handlers” that act much like an agent. And, there has to be some financial benefit, implied or otherwise, for the handler.

  129. RKV RKV says:

If you beleive in the *s Kiehl will be higher rated than anybody we have on campus or committed.

  130. BigHogFan BigHogFan says:

Arkansas is in no way “crowded” at QB. We have four QB’s on the roster, and it will not be a surprise when Mallett leaves after this season.

That will leave just…Tyler Wilson, Brandon Mitchell, and Jacoby Walker (who could very well switch positions.) We could definitely use Frazier & Allen. C’mon down Kiehl!!

Tyler will be the only one with game experience…

Mallett was the #1 ranked QB coming out of highschool when he signed with Michigan. How can Kiehl be higher than that?

  132. Blake Blake says:

no he wont be as highly ranked as Mallett or Winston. but thats not the point. the point is he needs to be a Hog!

  133. RKV RKV says:

Mallett was #2 behind Clausen but BP has already said there is no chance of him coming back for his senior year so I did not include him.

  134. Wastehog Wastehog says:

I agree BHF and under CBP how many time will a QB start more than two years before going pro. Thats what you see with the great QB’s, they don’t need four or five years to prove themselves and the NFL teams are always looking for new blood. We need a steady stream of high quailty QB to run Petrino’s system. In the case of Allen and Fraizer, one or both RS, one wins the starting job in the future then goes pro and the other takes over the next year. It wouldn’t be a five year deal for both but the weaker of the two could us the extra year to prepare himself.

  135. RKV RKV says:

According to Scout Kiehl is already the #6 QB in the country and who knows what will happen this year.

  138. hasn’t kiehl frazier received a good deal more interest from schools nationwide than brandon allen?

  139. Hog Fan,
Clausen doesn’t have Arkansas’ receiving corps.

  140. Hog Fan Hog Fan says:

I’d still take Mallett over Clausen anyday. His attitude while directing the team and leadership is much stronger than Clausen. You can watch them while directing the team on the field and Mallett has much more command of the team over Clausen.

  141. Tyler Tyler says:

Clausen does have one of the best receivers in college football, Golden Tate (what a name), and some great younger ones

Here is rivals list of the SEC`s top recruiters.

    RIVALS.COM SEC RECRUITER OF YEAR
    STEVE ADDAZIO, FLORIDA
Florida offensive coordinator Steve Addazio had a big recruiting year for the Gators. Addazio had his hand in recruiting two five-star defensive tackles from the Northeast in Sharrif Floyd and Dominique Easley. Floyd and Easley are the nation’s top two defensive tackles. That he signed them from Pennsylvania and New York, respectively, made his feat more impressive. Addazio also helped Florida sign three four-star players in offensive tackles Ian Silberman and Chaz Green and safety Jonathan Dowling. Floyd, Easley, Silberman and Green are all members of the Rivals100. In addition, Addazio also recruited two quarterback prospects in three-star Trey Burton and two-star Tyler Murphy.
MORE RIVALS.COM TOP 10 RECRUITERS IN THE SEC
    RODNEY GARNER, GEORGIA
Year in and year out, Garner is one of the most consistently successful recruiters. This season was no different. The Bulldogs didn’t land their typical stellar class, but Gardner did his part to keep the Dawgs in the top 20. Garner pulled in Rivals100 recruits in defensive end T.J. Stripling and safety Alec Ogletree. Garner also signed four-star defensive tackle Mike Thornton and four-star running back Ken Malcome.
    CURTIS LUPER, AUBURN
Luper landed two five-star prospects for the Tigers: junior college QB Cameron Newton and RB prospect Michael Dyer from Arkansas. He helped the Tigers with Louisiana four-star athlete Trovon Reed, and three-star offensive tackle Ed Christian was Luper’s responsibility. Luper was also the primary mastermind behind “Tiger Prowl” and “Big Cat Weekend.” Those two recruiting events helped create a great buzz for Auburn.
    GARRICK MCGEE, ARKANSAS
Arkansas offensive coordinator Garrick McGee pulled a major surprise on National Signing Day by helping the Hogs land four-star defensive tackle Calvin Barnett. McGee also pulled in three three-star athletes in Jatashun Beachum, Eric Bennett, and Jarrett Lake. Linebacker Courtney Gaston, offensive lineman Denton Simek, and Jacoby Walker are three other three-star prospects who were recruited by McGee. All of his signees for the Hogs were out-of-state players.
    KIRBY SMART, ALABAMA
Defensive coordinator Kirby Smart had a super year recruiting for the Crimson Tide. In all, Smart helped recruit nine prospects to Tuscaloosa. The headliner, of course, is five-star cornerback DeMarcus Milliner. Smart also landed six four-star prospects in junior college defensive back Dequan Menzie, running back Corey Grant, defensive end Adrian Hubbard, safety Nick Perry, tight end Brian Vogler and athlete Blake Sims. Rounding out his group are two three-star prospects in offensive lineman Austin Shepherd and wide receiver Ronald Powell. In all, six of Smart’s recruits were from Georgia (Menzie played his high school football in Columbus, Ga.
    MELVIN SMITH, MISSISSIPPI STATE
Cornerback coach Melvin Smith had a great haul for the Bulldogs, signing seven prospects. Smith was responsible for three four-star prospects: offensive tackle Damien Robinson, athlete Michael Carr and defensive Kaleb Eulls. Smith also got linebacker Ferlando Bohanna, athlete Jay Hughes, cornerback Jamerson Love and defensive tackle Curtis Virges – all three-star prospects.
    SAL SUNSERI, ALABAMA
Sunseri helped sign four prospects for the Crimson Tide. He landed the nation’s No. 2 pro-style quarterback prospect in Phillip Sims from Virginia. He also went to Maryland to land four-star offensive lineman Arie Kouandjio and to North Carolina to get four-star defensive end Alfy Hill. Sunseri also landed three-star defensive end Wilson Love.
    TROOPER TAYLOR, AUBURN
Taylor had a big year for the Tigers. He went to Mississippi and landed five-star offensive line prospect Shon Coleman. Taylor went to Louisiana to sign four-star athlete Trovon Reed. Taylor helped Auburn get a big one on Signing Day in four-star defensive end Corey Lemonier. Taylor also got three from Georgia: four-star wide receiver Antonio Goodwin, three-star defensive back Demetruce McNeal and athlete Shaun Kitchens. Four-star defensive end Joel Bonomolo is a junior college transfer from California. Taylor also landed a big in-state commitment in four-star wide receiver Jeremy Richardson. Seven of Taylor’s eight prospects were from out of state.
    LANCE THOMPSON, TENNESSEE
Thompson and Jim Chaney were both instrumental in helping Tennessee keep its class mostly intact after Lane Kiffin left for USC. They both also played a huge role in Tennessee keeping all eight early enrolles. Thompson also recruited four-star prospects in running back Rajion Neal and offensive lineman Jawuan James. Athlete Marcques Dixon, defensive end Martaze Jackson, and linebacker John Propst are all three-star prospects who were recruited by Thompson.
    BRIAN WHITE, FLORIDA
Gators tight end coach Brian White helped UF sign five players with an average ranking of four stars. White landed the nation’s top prospect, five-star defensive end Ronald Powell from California. White also recruited three four-star prospects in cornerback Joshua Shaw, wide receiver Adrian Coxson and athlete Travon Van. White also landed tight end prospect Michael McFarland.

  144. i dont think Rivals is congratuling the Florida guy for signing a two-star, its just listing the ones he recruited, which incidently included 2 5-stars and 3 4-stars.

It’s not a stretch to say that one man may have outrecruited Arkansas’ entire coaching staff.

Anyone have info on LB Rob Hankins? He was just offered, I believe.

  148. BigHogFan BigHogFan says:

Scout did not list Travis Bodenstein.

  149. RKV RKV says:

He waits until after NSD and apoligizes to Arkansas fans on a site called Tiger Droppings. Sounds to me like he is just trying to draw attention to himself.

  150. MikeATL MikeATL says:

I don’t trust Walt Williams or anyone he’s involved with. His apology is nothing but damage control. His ethics are questionalbe. The NCAA needs to take a close look at him and his dealings with Malzahn. I bet his cellphone records would be very revealing. Hey Walt Williams, WHO you been calling, and WHEN?

  151. His cellphone records cant be accessed because he is not a state employee.

  152. But I do think someone should rent a plane to fly a “WALT WILLIAMS IS NO LONGER WELCOME IN ARKANSAS” banner at the next Auburn-Arkansas home game.

  154. RKV RKV says:

One thing that seems fishy is that he gets his picture taken with Kiehl At West Fork and the next year he’s at Shiloh.

  155. why is that fishy exactly RKV? isnt that his job?

Isn’t his job to promote players in an effort to improve their chances at a College scholarship? I’m pretty sure convincing a kid to transfer from a small public school to Shiloh is not?

  157. Tyler Tyler says:

Guys, just remember that recruits and their parents can read this

  158. RKV RKV says:

I’m not going to say anything else about this subject except I don’t beleive handlers or agents should be allowed around high school athletes. I know we are bordering a very touchy subject and I don’t want to open any wounds I’m sorry if I have already said too much, end of subject.

  159. hogfan1509 hogfan1509 says:

I imagine if anything illegal is suspected in any of Auburn’s recruiting several schools (including the Hogs) have already notified the NCAA, you can include Tenn (before the new guy) in that also! One thing about major college recruiting, as cutthroat as it is, if you get caught you will pay the price!

  160. You know RKV, speaking from personal experience about the opportunities I missed as a kid, I would encourage talented kids to switch to schools where their hopes at least have a chance of becoming reality.

Of course it is really a family decision.

  161. MikeATL MikeATL says:

Walt Williams should be reported to Michael Slive, if hasn’t already been.

  162. MikeATL MikeATL says:

Tyler, if I was a parent of a recruit, and read about Walt Williams and his dirty dealings, I would say thank you for letting me know about him.

He could cause nothing but problems for the recruit. As a parent I wouldn’t want my kid involved with him.

  163. ArmyHog ArmyHog says:

Has anyone seen Chris Low’s blog on ESPN where he hypes up FL, AL, and LSU for their great starts on the 2011 recruiting classes?

    http://espn.go.com/blog/sec

LSU deserves some praise for getting commitments from 6 ESPNU150WL guys, but he talks about how great FL and AL are for getting 2 ESPNU150WL commits already. I guess he didn’t notice that Arkansas AND KENTUCKY both have 2 ESPNU150WL commitments as well. The bias is killing me. I’m not going to claim that AR and KY are going to beat out AL or FL in the 2011 recruiting “rankings”, but to imply that they are so far ahead of everyone else when they’re not is less than genuine.

Okay, off my soap box and back to work.

  164. ArmyHog ArmyHog says:

Oh, one other thing I noticed…not a single SEC school has a 2011 commitment from an out-of-state player, except for TN who has one from NC (non-SEC state). There’s really not a story there. It’s just homestate kids committing early to their favorite schools.

  165. BigHogFan BigHogFan says:

All of LSU’s committs are from Lousianna.

  166. BigHogFan BigHogFan says:

ArmyHog I should have read your second post before commenting on your first one.

  167. Big Boi Big Boi says:

It`ll be Les`s last go around at LSU. They are falling fast LSU and Ole Miss are the only two teams in SEC West that are on their way down(IMO). People need to remember Gus wants to be a Head coach, and next year he`ll prolly get his shot and all this Auburn stealing our kids crap will go away.

  168. MikeATL MikeATL says:

Why would anyone want Malzahn as a head coach?

  169. Big Boi Big Boi says:

Hype and his Offenses have been tops in the country. I see him landing at an Indiana or Maryland.(thats the top jobs he could get)

  170. ArmyHog ArmyHog says:

I’ve always said that Less Miles is my favorite coach in the SEC and I’d be sad to see him go. You can almost always count on either winning the LSU game or being in it up until the end because of the horrible decisions he will make. He has done less with more talent than anyone in the country.

I agree that next year will be his last year, and I wouldn’t be surprised at all if Auburn has a big year and Gus gets the LSU job. If that happens, the Ark recruit stealing will go into overdrive. If history tells us anything, then Auburn would go downhill pretty fast when he leaves. Look at what happened to Tulsa.

I hate it when a school sells these kids a bill of goods and then pulls the bait and switch on them. Auburn got a great recruiting class thinking they will play in that explosive, Gus Malzahn offense, and, you can bank on it, that he’ll be gone in one to two years.

  171. ArmyHog ArmyHog says:

By the way, I’m just saying I wouldn’t be surprised if LSU hired him, not that I think it’ll happen. At any rate, he’ll be a head coach somewhere in the next two years…not running Auburn’s offense for this current recruiting class.

  172. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

With limited college coaching experience what kind of staff could Malzahn come up with?

  173. ArmyHog ArmyHog says:

That’s an excellent argument to say that he will be at a lower school first, but he’ll be a HC somewhere. LSU would be looking for a proven coach. Maybe someone from OK St.

Seriously, though. Does anyone really expect Malzahn to be at Auburn more than two years? He’s going to make Bobby Petrino look like a homesteader…and the media won’t say a negative word about it. Maybe he’ll get the Louisville job for a few years, then get an NFL gig, but come back to an SEC school after less than a year. And ESPN will say what a great coach he is because he moved up the ranks so quickly.

  174. MikeATL MikeATL says:

Malzahn is all hype. He needs to go back to high school coaching. That’s where he will have success with his gimmick plays.

  175. Big Boi Big Boi says:

MRPFCT, If he gets a job where the living conditions are nice and the school will pay for assistants he`ll get a staff. It won`t be an SEC school unless its Vandy and their are always Alumni and hold overs from what ever school it is. And he has guys from Tulsa that might be ready to move. Who knows but if you show someone the money they usally come after it.

  176. Andrew Andrew says:

Does anyone have a subscription to rivals here? I saw an article headline that listed the top 60 prospects in Arkansas. I was wondering if someone could post it here for everyone to read.

I think Malzahn should stay for a while. The SEC is the #1 conference in the country, and the assistants get paid very well for their proven accomplishments.
If Malzahn has a breakout season, he’ll get the money from AU before someone else can snatch him up.

Since the SEC is the nation’s showcase conference, Malzahn gets a lot of bigtime coaching exposure at AU. There’s really no reason to leave, at least for a while.

Maybe Les Miles should go after Malzahn and let him completely run his offense. Like HDN, he’d be much better off letting someone else share the decision making, and he’d still be close to Arkansas.

Hmmm…maybe I should just be quite.

  181. Tyler Tyler says:

I don’t think Chris Low is very biased, against Arkansas at least. He seems to have a man-crush on Ryan Mallet and was hyping up Greg Childs, Jarius Wright, Joe Adams, and even Tyler Wilson and Jim Youngblood before the season started. He mentioned Arkansas’ 2 commitments in an earlier article and he was praising Florida for having the #2 DT in the country already committed.

  182. blu3tick blu3tick says:

Yeah Chris low has some very good articles on Arkansas Army Hog…

Now I’m gonna go do some googling on this Walt thing…

  183. Ron in Germany Ron in Germany says:

Here is a nightmare senario. Mark Rickt loses his job and Bob Stoops goes to Georgia. Then Malzahn gets the Oklahoma HC job. Putting him right next door to us and our recruits. He would be able to assemble a staff just because it’s Oklahoma. Whew ! Somebody wake me up from this nightmare !

Only in his wildest dreams could malazhan run a football team or an offense like Bobby Petrino.

  185. Blake Blake says:

guys malzahn is not going to get a big time hc job right away. no way OU would hire him

  186. Blake Blake says:

look at coaches like Petrino and Strong and how they proved themselves before getting hc jobs and where they went. he will get a conf usa or big east chance. maybe

  187. HogFanTilIDie HogFanTilIDie says:

Malzhan needs to take a HC job with someone like Memphis or East Carolina and cut his teeth, learning to be a college head coach and 5 or 6 years from now he’ll be ready to try to make the move to big time college football.
