Arkansas Coach Bobby Petrino spoke to the media before he and his staff talked about the 2010 recruiting class to the Little Rock Razorback club Thursday night.

Petrino thinks the D-line signees bring more size, strength and speed to the defensive front . He talked about Arkansas being undersized over the last two years and  how the D-line class will add to the competition.

He thinks the 2011 in-state crop will be  a great class.

Arkansas will stay in North Florida with WR coach Kris Cinkovich in charge of area. Petrino said the Hogs will probably stay away from South Florida because of the travel difficulties of getting there from Fayetteville.

He said the Razorbacks will focus more on Texas with four coaches recruiting the state. San Antonio will be an area they hit more aggressively along with other parts of the state. Mississippi will be another place the Hogs plan to recruit harder.

Petrino said Arkansas will entertain several juniors this Saturday. He said the prospects will attend the Arkansas-Auburn basketball game.

    Appreciate the update Richard.
It looks like the coaches are getting all geared up for the 2011 in-staters.
I also like the fact they plan on hitting Texas and Miss. a little harder this year too.
I think Razorback recruiting is about to become really interesting.

    GO HOGS GO, BABY!!!!!

  3. razorpride89 razorpride89 says:

I’m thinking along the same lines as you, Gonzo. It seems the coaches are extremely serious & focused going after this next class.

RD, I hope you have a well-deserved vacation planned out in the next few weeks!

  4. RazorRandy RazorRandy says:

I would think they’ll be attacking the DFW area extremely hard with the Jerry World game there every year.

  5. RazorRandy RazorRandy says:

The fact that we will be kicking the crap out of a-and-m every year, right there in front of them, certainly bodes well.

  6. HogFanBrad HogFanBrad says:

I wonder if they are gonna offer that Harvill kid? The Lemming web-site has him listed in the 2011 “pre-season” top 100.

  7. RazorRandy RazorRandy says:

I really can’t get a feel for that guy. Obviously stronger than dirt, but he’ a little undersized, from what I understand. I’m really speaking out of the side of my head, as i don’t know what his potential is for different positions. What do you think? I’d love it if he gets an offer.

  8. HogFanBrad HogFanBrad says:

idk, maybe he’s not that good and I’m just intrigued by his ridiculous strength. Still, it seems there has to be a spot for a Herculean specimen like that somewhere. Possibly as a FB or LB/DE.

Well do you think if Joker Phillips was named the Ala coach tomorrow it wouldn’t effect Bamas w/l record next year? THe Vandy coach to Fla for that matter! Also, do you really thing if the entire Fla class went to Vandy instead they would be ranked no 1. Your delusional, the reality is that the major market teams enjoy edges other teams don’t! Yes they have good teams but the effort it takes to get there is much easier on them. Thats why all of them are the bigger more powerful schools in money, enrollment, booster riches/contacts, any way you want to look at it! If you don’t enjoy the thrill of a smaller school rising up and smiting them once in a while then you should consider becoming a fan of the big boys instead! Thats the easy way out, take it! For me, Root Hog or Die forever!

Great news Richard. I hope our fans pack Bud Walton Saturday to root the Hogs to a W.

    Exactly, Blake.

  13. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

6 known instate juniors offered so far and more to come. Not recruiting south Florida. Recruiting Texas harder. Sounds like Petrino is changing things up from what he did this past year.

Alabama isn’t anywhere near a major market. You are referring to television market right? I assume that since when folks say “major market” that’s what they mean. San Diego State is in a major market and a state loaded with blue chippers and they’re not very good. There are other examples of major market teams that are not very good.

Looks like the quarterback of say, three years from now will be Allen or Walker. Then again, Petrino may find another 5* out there in a year or two. In reviewing our on campus players at the moment, it looks like our cornerbacks and safties are good and strong for a couple more years. I think Winston next year will have the breakout year we all expect him to as well as Gordon. Now lets just get those running backs to chew up some yardage. By the way, who do you all think will be that feature back next year…Wingo or Davis or Johnson?

  31. Ron in Germany Ron in Germany says:

By the way, who do you all think will be that feature back next year…Wingo or Davis or Johnson?

By Razorback Roger in Florida on Feb 5, 2010 @ 8:08am
    ———————————————–

Davis is my guess. I just hope we are much improved in the running game. And let a RB find some rythum.

  32. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

I would guess Davis. He hits the hole hard(Wingo doesn’t), has good size(Johnson doesn’t), and runs hard and through tackles(Green doesn’t). Knile Davis would have been even more highly recruited had he not been injured.

  33. FBJunkie FBJunkie says:

I don’t know if we will have a feature back, but we must improve our run game next year. Our defense wasn’t good last year, but it wasn’t as horrible as a lot of people want to make it out to be. Many times our offense hurt our defense. Keeping a defense on the sidelines as much as possible makes a defense much better.

  34. hogfan1509 hogfan1509 says:

Just like the receivers I think BP will work very hard to keep all his RBs involved and working hard for playing time, feed the stud, you know!

  35. WPSGHG WPSGHG says:

I like the way Davis hits the hole. Much more Dmac-ish. Wingo reminds me of Cedric Cobbs…sometimes dances at the LOS too much. I bet he will gain more confidence through off-season workouts and up his play for 2010. I’ve always like DJ too. From what I hear, he doesn’t always bring it to practice. I think he will take the offseason a little more seriously this spring and try and establish himself. Everyone has averaged pretty good YPC. Should be an exciting group next season.

  36. GonzoHog GonzoHog says:

I agree with all of you about K. Davis possibly being our feature back.
I just hope he stays healthy enough to compete going into next fall.

    FBJunkie,

Your absolutely right about our offense sometimes hurting our defense.
Ryan Mallett can be the offenses best friend, while sometimes being the defenses worst enemy.
It’s good to go back onto the field with a lead, but it’s a heck of a lot better to do it with a little rest.
I’d like to see CBP instill a little more ball control into the offense. That all starts with R. Mallett not trying to always force the ball downfield for quik strikes.
Maybe with the improvement of the O-line and RBS, we’ll get there next season.

By Ron in Germany on Feb 4, 2010 @ 6:43pm

Blake, Lemming is very impressed with our class. He has talked about how he can tell the difference between a productive player at a small school vs a semi productive player in a large school. Even he gets it wrong sometimes.

By Ron in Germany on Feb 4, 2010 @ 6:49pm

He’s eating his way right onto the D line, just where we really want him. If he wants to run the ball he better lose about 50-60 lbs.

    By HogFanBrad on Feb 4, 2010 @ 6:50pm

Talked about Petrino recruiting system. Being National. Every year he see’s a marked improvement. Impressed with our DT’s. Every school is looking for great recruiters. Thinks Walker will be a good QB. He says Pkg deals are a good thing. They happen more than we know.

  40. Big Boi Big Boi says:

MRPRFCT, We are doing exactly what we need to do with 6 in-state offers and counting Darion Griswold, Wesleigh Foster, Brad Sherion, Travis Bodstein, Dylan Hale, Artez Brown, Kyle Coleman, Grady Ollison, Tommy Jacson, Mitch Hall, Isaac McCoy, Sam Harvill and Antino Cooksey should all get offers. I hope the next offer is to Artez Brown he is 6`1 almost 200lbs and might be the best RB in-state but will most likely be a CB the type of CB that you can put on an Island against the other teams # 1. If we can get into the Dallas/Fort Worth area and get most of these kids we can have a top 15 class.(IMO)

  41. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

I think if we close the state off and sign the top guys and get our share of Tulsa and Texas guys we’ll have a Top 10-15 class. I’m excited about the 2011 class and I believe Petrino will clean up this year.

  42. Ron in Germany Ron in Germany says:

    You’re welcome Redhog

  43. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

That’s why I don’t like Gus Malzah. And his system. He puts a lot of pressure on his own defense with the hurry-up no-huddle offense.

  44. ArmyHog ArmyHog says:

I posted this on another threat, but it is more relevant to this one…someone suggested that Brey Cook (OL from Har-Ber) might be a 5* recruit for 2011.

It looks like Brey Cook is interested in OU. If he is a 5* recruit and he goes to OU, that would look really bad on CBP to lose two 5*s in a row. Frazier is going to be a hard sell too. Hopefully they both love the HOGS as much as we do, and will want to be a part of building a championship caliber team here at home.

I would love to see Frazier and Brandon Allen both come to UA and create another QB U. Guys could line up on the depth chart and wait for their turn to lead the nation in passing and get a shot at the NFL (like Texas Tech and USC).

  45. hogfan1509 hogfan1509 says:

Glad to see Willy predicting good improvement in line play this year! SHows that he feels progress is being made, sounded like he felt one or two of the recruits will get playing time this fall also! Also, seems everyone including the coaches are predicting kickoffs for touchbacks! If only the punting game improves our special teams might be a real strenth for a change! I too agree that the offense needs to work hard on ball control, that will lessen the opponents time on offense and give the defense needed breaks! Sure looks like the Hogs have a real shot at a great season, can’t wait! Go Hogs!

  46. P Lee P Lee says:

Good point MrPrfct. We need to hit all the surrounding states North LA, West MS, Memphis area, DFW and East Texas and I’ve lived in North Florida. I know how fertile that area is. It’s Football 12 months out of the year. Go Hogs!

  47. ArmyHog ArmyHog says:

The thing that Malzahn’s system requires is incredible depth on the defensive side of the ball, since they are the field so much. I still remember the USC game (although I try to forget it). The offense would go out, throw a deep ball incomplete, try a gimmick play for a loss, throw a screen for a minimal gain, and punt. They would burn about 30 seconds off the clock and give the defense about 3 minutes to rest. I seriously felt sorry for our defensive players in the second half. They were hurting and embarassed, and Carroll was calling pass plays late in the 4th Qtr (was Kiffin the OC then?). Malzahn’s system didn’t work at Arkansas because we didn’t have the depth we needed at defense (and Nutt handcuffed him).

I hate to say it, but in the next couple of years, Auburn might have the kind of depth to make that system work. Don’t get me wrong though, I’d rather have CBP’s more reliable offensive system than Malzahn’s gimmicks.

  48. hogfan1509 hogfan1509 says:

Lets face it, with Allen being a coaches son and highly regarded luring a second QB into the fray next year is going to be a tough sell! I too hope we get both, but the top players want to play quickly and most are looking hard at where they will wind up! As for Cook, who knows at this point, at least we’ve got a year to work on him!

  49. ArmyHog ArmyHog says:

Ryan Mallett threw 30 TDs and 7 INTs. How can you fault him for ball control? CBP’s offense is predicated on the deep ball. You have to stretch the field and throw it deep on a regular basis (and run the ball up the middle) to make everything else work. Granted, there were a few times early in the year when he got greedy (UGA game) when he should have just gotten the 1st down, but later in the year, Ryan was as solid as I’ve seen at QB in a long time. If he can consistently use good footwork and not sail the ball occassionally, he could be the best QB the SEC has ever seen. He should easily pass for 4000 yards next season.

  50. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

Georgia signed 2 top 10 QBs a year ago. Guys like Frazier know there’s gonna be competition anywhere they go. Brandon Allen being Bobby Allen’s son shouldn’t matter because Petrino is going to play the best QB regardless.

  51. hogfan1509 hogfan1509 says:

Man I’ll take a td anyway I can get it! However, quick strikes do put pressure on your defense and give the opponent more time to respond. A few long time consuming drives would be nice for that reason.

  52. hogfan1509 hogfan1509 says:

I agree MRP, thats the way I’d like to see it play out also but you just don’t know how Frazier looks at it and what his options will be.

  53. GonzoHog GonzoHog says:

If Keihl Frazier commits to the Hogs, I hope he doesn’t have trouble handling the snap from under center.
A lot of so called fans are already writing off Tyler Wilson as the next starting QB because of that very thing.
They both come from a spread offense, just like Mitch Mustain did. Remember him? I believe he bobbled a few snaps back in the day.

  54. ArmyHog ArmyHog says:

Agree. But CBP calls plays with that in mind. You can’t go out every series and throw the long ball every other down. You mix it up and keep the defense guessing. Sometimes a playcaller thinks he can do anything and gets greedy though. CBP seems to be a very disciplined, methodical, calculating playcaller. There’s always room to second guess though.

The D gave up too many big plays last year, but I think that may be part of the philosophy (although there’s no excuse for just not tackling well). The thing that really kills us is when the other team puts together a ball controlling drive and wears down our D. That handcuffs our offense a little because it forces them to try to hold the ball a little longer and not strike quickly.

There’s a lot that goes into calling plays. Those guys earn every dollar they make.

  55. Blake Blake says:

Ron will you send me that email list of what I think it is?

  56. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

I’m sure Frazier is putting in extra reps taking a snap from center so he’s not the next Tyler Wilson.

  57. Ron in Germany Ron in Germany says:

I believe it is reciprocal. If our running game had been more productive last year we would not have had to rely on the passing game so much.

  58. ArmyHog ArmyHog says:

If he wants to play in the NFL, he should come to UA and learn how to play from under center.

  59. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

    Good point, Ron.

  60. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

We were in 3rd and long way too often last year.

  61. Ron in Germany Ron in Germany says:

    I sent you something Blake.

  62. Blake Blake says:

I personally think that we will see huge improvements in the running game this year. Chris Klenakis is going to prove to be a huge improvement as an OL coach if you ask me.

Look at what he did at Nevada, this past year in leading the SEC in rushing for the first time in NCAA history they produced three 1,000 yard rushers in a single season. DiZaM!

And I can guarantee you he and Horton are talking together and just smiling with all the talent they have in the backfield.

    Johnson, Davis, Wingo, and Green.

Then there are 3 or 4 other talented backs who have faded into the background some. Who knows if this offseason one of them goes Hog Wild and makes a charge forward.

  63. Hog in OKC Hog in OKC says:

Didn’t I see where Petrino has decided to keep Curtis on offense instead of switching him over to defense?

  64. Ron in Germany Ron in Germany says:

I just hope they all stick around so we can keep feeding them.

  65. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

I hope so. I love Curtis catching the ball out of the backfield.

  66. Big Boi Big Boi says:

Gonzo, Don`t be bitter about Tyler Wilson.lol He does still have a shot at QB. I don`t think it will be the center quarterback exchange that keeps him from playing. It`ll be Brandon Mitchell(experts on the hill say he is the QB of the future not Wilson) bigger, more mobile and better arm.(from what I hear)

  67. Blake Blake says:

Thanks Ron. I thought that’s what it was. I saw your earlier email.

    Thanks!

  68. Ron in Germany Ron in Germany says:

Curtis was switched late last year before the Liberty Bowl to DB

  69. Ron in Germany Ron in Germany says:

    You’re welcome Blake

  70. FBJunkie FBJunkie says:

My comment wasn’t a bash on QB play hurting the defense, it was the lack of being able to run effectively to keep our defense fresh. No matter how good a defense is, the more snaps an offense gets the better their chances of success. Just my opinion, but in the NC game Texas got their momentum going when Bama started getting conservative on offense causing their defense to be on the field too much.

  71. MikeATL MikeATL says:

Regarding running back, I always thought Davis had the look and moves of a true RB.

I’m curious to see if Big Tex gets a chance to run with the ball. In his video you can see he’s got the moves needed at RB, and he likes to hit people.

I honestly think if Michael Smith didn’t get injured we would have won at least one of the fives games we lost. Smith could have given us a 8-4 season or possibly 9-3. A good RB can make a major difference. Hopefully someone will step up this year.

  72. MikeATL MikeATL says:

Regarding QB, do you remember the discussion earlier this year with Kiehl’s father? I believe it was last month.

I read that during the days surrounding Mr. Frazier’s comments on this board, Kiehl Frazier was in Auburn visitng with Malzahn and Chizik.

Yes, not talking on the phone……… visiting in Auburn.

  73. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

It looks like Nutt’s gonna get Taylor Reed QB El Dorado and Jaalen Watkins RB Pulaski Robinson.

Who’s your expert source on the hill, regarding our QBs?

  75. GonzoHog GonzoHog says:

Isn’t Pulaski Robinson where D-Mac came from?

  76. Jeff Jeff says:

As a razorback fan living in Houston, I would be careful thinking the Hogs are going to own A&M every year. They are an up and coming young football team that just kicked our butts in recruiting. As a matter of fact don’t be shocked if they turn the tables on us as early as next year.

  77. WPSGHG WPSGHG says:

    Pulaski Oak Grove = Dmac

  78. GonzoHog GonzoHog says:

    Thanks WPSGHG. I remember now.

  79. HogFanBrad HogFanBrad says:

Between Nutt, Malzahn, Tubby, and the big boys i.e, FL, AL, OU, etc, we may have a hard time keeping a lot of these guys in-state, but a HOG will always be a HOG! It does look like CBP is getting a head start this year.

  80. Ethan Ethan says:

    Gonzo,
I’m friends with a couple of trainers for the football team. Petrino and Co. are very excited about Mitchell. Incredible athlete with a better arm than Wilson. I think both are great players but Mitchell will get the opportunity to compete for the backup job and Tyler will have his hands full holding him off.

  81. Big Boi Big Boi says:

Trey Biddy, Bo Mattingly. I pretty much think everyone but you think Mitchell is the future not Wilson. We`ll see after summer, spring ball might be to soon to move Mitchell ahead of Wilson (Mitchell`s injury)

  82. Big Boi Big Boi says:

MRPFCT, I hear Trevon Reed is the real deal at WR, and could be a college QB as well. When i made my list earlier of in-state kids that should get offers I forgot about Reed.

  83. GonzoHog GonzoHog says:

I don’t think kids these days put as much stock into staying in-state and playing for the home school like they used to do.
The more heavily recruited kids will go where they think they can fit in, play early and win championships.
The trust thing also plays a big role with some of these kids.
Being a great recruiter is sometimes more than just words. Sometimes it has a lot to do with who your recruiting for, rather than what you say.
If you can’t offer a bigtime recruit a chance for national exposure with the expectation of winning championships, it may not be enough.
More times than not, it won’t be.

With all that being said, I think our chances are good with the 2011 in-state recruits.
The UofA is exciting right now for this group.

    GO HOGS GO, BABY!!!!!

  84. hogfan1509 hogfan1509 says:

Say what you will, but I think BP’s already drawn a line in the sand with Frazier! If he wants to overly court the out of state teams I imagine thats where he will wind up. You just don’t need to invite discourse on your team if you know somes attitudes aren’t where they need to be. Not to say that thats whats happening, but I really doubt BP will chase the kid to NSD if thats what it is going to take! In state loyalty goes both ways!

  85. GonzoHog GonzoHog says:

    Big Boi,

It’s funny you mention Bo and Trey as ammunition for your argument concerning Mitchell.
I’ve seen evidence you disagree with their assesments of recruits more than you agree.

First of all, let me clear something up. Tyler Wilson isn’t my hometown hero, as you have suggested. I just know what he’s capable of throu first hand knowledge.
You, on the other hand, have first hand knowledge of niether.
I wish Mr. Mitchell all the best, just as I do Tyler Wilson.
I don’t make statements about TW just because of being biased. I say them them through actual and factual knowledge.
You, on the other hand, just make statements through what? “I have a source…” or “I have a couple of buddies…” or “I have a friend…”

    Give me a freakin break!

  86. Big Boi Big Boi says:

I think Frazier and OC Garrick McGee have a good relationship. And don`t forget Malzahn very will could be a head coach somewhere next year and not even at Auburn.

  87. oldhog oldhog says:

I think the fact that Frazier and Allen are buddies may sway him to be a hog; however, if he wants to go to school somewhere else let’s not bash him.

  88. Big Boi Big Boi says:

Gonzo, Thanks for attacking my opinions. And yes I`ve seen Tyler play against Texas, Mo ST and EMU. And have seen many Highlights on youtube of Mitchell.(only HS) If you hear anything about Mitchell from the media its always “QB of the future” And anytime you hear about Wilson it`s always about his fumbles.

  89. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

Overly court the outside teams? Where do you get this?

  90. Big Boi Big Boi says:

Does anyone have any info on why Mitchell Roberts didn`t sign? Could he being waiting on an Arkansas offer?

  91. GonzoHog GonzoHog says:

Thanks for the verification, Big Boi. That’s pretty much what I had thought.
I’m looking very forward to watching both Tyler Wilson and Brandon Mitchell excel as our future QBs.

  92. Blake Blake says:

Lets all hope Frazier comes to the Hill. I do not want to see him go anywhere else.

McGee is recruiting him and they have a good relationship so that bodes really well for our chances, and we should probably leave it at that.

The Hogs made a very early offer to him and made it clear he was wanted on the Hill. Just because we have Allen committed shouldn’t make him think he has to go somewhere else. Where he goes will likely have a ton of QBs on campus already and they will also be actively recruiting other QBs. That is just the nature of the game.

I remember his dad coming on to talk to us all just a few weeks ago, and he said nothing but good things about Kiehl’s recruitment with Arkansas. I think that is more than a good enough reason for us all to continue to hope he comes to the Hill and to stay positive. In the end if he does go somewhere else lets not question his character, he seems like a great young man.

  94. Ron in Germany Ron in Germany says:

I had to confirm this before I could post it:

The signing dates for basketball is April 14 thru May 19th.

  95. RKV RKV says:

One reason BP hired our new O-line coach was for his knowlege of the pistol formation. With the QBs we have on campus behind Mallet, and the ones we are recruiting, like Kiehl, he wants to make his O better suited to athletic QBs.

  96. Ron in Germany Ron in Germany says:

RKV, Where do you get yor info ? I respectfully have to disagree with you. Petrino did not bring in a new coach to install a new offense. He brought him in to improve the running game. Make no mistake. Petrino will run his own offense. IMHO

  97. BigHogFan BigHogFan says:

Chris Klenakis, our new O-line coach was the offensive coordinator for the Nevada wolfpack……In 2008, the Wolf Pack offense steamrolled over opposing defenses to the tune of a number of school records including total offense, most rushing yards and rushing touchdowns. In 2009, Klenakis and the offense eclipsed all those marks and the Wolf Pack had the number one ranked rushing offense in the nation, averaging 344.9 yards per game. They ran a lot of their offense out of the pistol formation, which Petrino wants to get more familiar with. He did use wrinkles of this formation this past season, but the main reason he brought in coach K, is to improve the running game.

  98. RKV RKV says:

At the PC when he announced his hiring he said he was very interested in learning more about his Pistol formation. He said we used it some this year but we call it the gun and call our shotgun the shot.

  99. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

Yea, we are going to use it, but not a total move to the pistol. I don’t see Petrino tying his hands with a system like that.

  100. Ron in Germany Ron in Germany says:

    What Petrino said was:

We run it some and we call it the Shot. When the RB is offset we call it the Gun. I agree we will run some “Shot” But Petrino runs a Pro offense. Not the Pistol.

That said: I believe the future of College football will be the pistol or spread. Too many HS QB’s are not learning to take a snap under center.

  101. BigHogFan BigHogFan says:

Certainly not, I think coach Petrino just has a hunger for football knowledge. He probably just wanted to pick coach K’s brain a little, and see what he could take from his system to improve on his own. We will use wrinkles of the “pistol” or “gun” again this year….Isn’t this where Mallet is in shotgun, and has a single running back to his side, with two tight ends?

  102. RKV RKV says:

Klenakis, like Malzan, wrote a book on this offence and the pistol formation is his method of improving a running game. BP will always run his offense but he is always looking at ways to improve it. He loves varying formations to give DCs more to worry about. His main intention is to be wide open early, use the passing game to open up a lead then pound it down their throut with the running game in the second half.

  103. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

The pistol is when a RB lines up directly behind the QB. The QB is not undress Center but instead a few yards back.

  104. Ron in Germany Ron in Germany says:

In order to be successful in the Pistol you have to have a QB who can run the ball. A Pro style QB won’t work on an everyday basis.

  105. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

LOL *under. Sorry, on the iPhone.

  106. BigHogFan BigHogFan says:

Thanks. I’m sure Petrino is trying to figure out how to throw the deep ball out of this formation :)

  107. Ron in Germany Ron in Germany says:

The pistol is when a RB lines up directly behind the QB. The QB is not undress Center but instead a few yards back.

    By MRPRFCT on Feb 5, 2010 @ 2:54pm
    ————————————

Correct ! The QB will line up 4 yards deep from center in the Pistol.

  108. BigHogFan BigHogFan says:

I like the “running back by committee” approach, and our stable of backs are set up for success this year.

  109. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

I’d like one of the runningbacks to be “the man”. Maybe not the entire season, but each game have one RB be the main ballcarrier.

  110. BigHogFan BigHogFan says:

So the QB is 4 yards behind scrimmage, and the running back is directly behind him…a yard or two. Me likes. Seems dangerous.

If our run blocking is improved, we could very well have the best offense in the country!!

  111. Blake Blake says:

I think BP likes to add new things to his already huge offensive playbook.

The Pistol or “Shot” will be integrated more over the coming years I am sure, but everything will be done in a balance. That is just the way BP is, but you can see how getting more of this formation in now is going to be great for us the coming years.

QBs like Mitchell, Wilson, Allen, Frazier, and Walker all have the ability to thrive in this formation.

  112. Misisipy Hog Misisipy Hog says:

I just love having a team that looks like they have a plan on how to get a reciever open. Instead of waiting until 3rd and 8 and trying the same route down the sideline. You know….. kinda like Ole miss did this year. QB gets up looking out his earhole after every 3rd down pass attempt. Yep I like it ! WPS !

  113. BigHogFan BigHogFan says:

I can’t argue with Davis. I know he broke an ankle in high school, then broke it again when he enrolled at the U of A early. This plagued him early last year, but he seemed to bounce back nicely. Maybe he’s the man. He was running hard towards the end of the year, but it seems like Wingo, and Green got better as the season went along as well.

  114. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

    Thanks Blake.

  115. RKV RKV says:

After Mallett all of our present QBs and all the ones we are recruiting are very athletic and could operate out many formations. BP loves to use packages of players for special situations.

  116. ArmyHog ArmyHog says:

This is killing me. When is the first game? I don’t know if I can wait until September.

Does anyone have a good idea of next year’s schedule? We have the SEC West plus SC, like always. Then we have UGA and Vandy from the East rotation. The annual A&M slaughter. Who are our other non-conf games? Anybody have dates, especially for the Bama game?

Man, I sure hope we can schedule our bye week for the 2nd week of the season again. That was great! not.

  117. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

Yea all the way to the Cotton Bowl. Let’s beat Nutt and Ole Miss before we say how bad they are shall we?

  118. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

Tennessee Tech, Louisiana-Monroe, Texas A&M, UTEP are the non-conference games. We drop Florida.

  119. Misisipy Hog Misisipy Hog says:

They were nothing compared to what they expected to be. Do you think their QB looked better under Nutt ? No…he looked like C Dick used to look. Confused and frustrated. I am sorry Mr p. I will go back in my corner …Geez.

  120. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

Brandon Allen is a pocket passer. Guys, Ryan Mallett is athletic. Ask Ron Crawford about Ryan on the basketball court. So he’s not as fast as Brandon Mitchell, but he’s still athletic. Let’s not deminish that.

  121. Misisipy Hog Misisipy Hog says:

I only said they looked bad on 3rd and long. ……wow. You really are a Nutt fan no doubt.

  122. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

Nutt doesn’t coach QBs so take that up with Kent Austin. They also lost Oher so that may have something to do with poor QB play. I’m not trying to defend Nutt, but we look silly taking potshots at him after he’s been gone for 2 years and they’ve beat us twice. Let’s focus on getting the Hogs better.

  123. ArmyHog ArmyHog says:

I would love to see all 4 guys rush for 700 yards each. Green gets all the TDs though because he’s the bruiser that runs people over at the goal line.

BTW, anyone notice that last year we went from being one of the worst red zone offenses in the country (2008) to one of the best (2009). In 2008, Michael Smith (God love him) just couldn’t punch through the wall at the goal line. This year (at least later in the year), Green figured out that all he had to do was lower his head and bull his way to pay dirt. That, along with the ever-present threat to pass it, equals TD almost everytime.

From top to bottom, I think we have the best WR corps in the SEC and the 2nd best RB stable (behind Bama). Oh, and of course, by far the best QB.

  124. Misisipy Hog Misisipy Hog says:

    Yes sir Mr P

  125. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

We didn’t look toO good on third down either did we? I’m not a Nutt fan, but come on let’s beat him before we say how bad he is.

  126. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

We have the best WR/TE group in the country.

  127. Blake Blake says:

Yeah Ryan has come a long ways from where he was athleticism wise coming out of HS.

And you are right Allen is classified as a pocket passer, but man his video looks like he is a lot more of a dual threat than people think.

    http://insider.espn.go.com/ncf/recruiting/tracker/player?recruitId=92811&action=login&appRedirect=http%3a%2f%2finsider.espn.go.com%2fncf%2frecruiting%2ftracker%2fplayer%3frecruitId%3d92811

  128. RKV RKV says:

Mallett is athletic but he doesn’t have the body type you would want to take a pounding in the running game. And in my opinion we have enough background on HDN that we should be able to bad mouth him if we want to, we shouldn’t have to beat him first.I’m not a Nutt hater like some but he’s a man he should be able to take it.

  129. Blake Blake says:

Oh and notice what formation they are running some in the highlights =)

  130. Big Boi Big Boi says:

I hope Dennis Johnson can turn into our feature back. Along with Knile Davis he and Johnson run between the tackels better then anyone on the team. Wingo just wants to run to the outside and Green runs into the backs of our OL more then he does the opposing team. Wingo does do very good on pass protection and swing passes. Green has his moments where he does run with his head-up and like a 260lb man. I know CBP loves the big back but the pure speed back seems to work in the SEC a lil beteer(IMO)

  131. Hog n OKC Hog n OKC says:

DJ is like a little bowling ball. You didn’t see the 1st guy bring him down toward the end of the year. He would initiate the contact.

  132. Blake Blake says:

Coach McGee, bring Frazier onto the Hill with Allen!!

    WPS!

  133. poch punt poch punt says:

To me Dennis Johnson seemed to be the best back at breaking tackles. I agree with Big Boi’s observation. I think it says alot for the program when we can speculate about which running back we each prefer. Injuries can always put a whole new light on the situation.

  134. Blake Blake says:

You guys seen Brad Shearin video?

    I found this one… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0KFD09lXHc

  135. Big Boi Big Boi says:

Does anyone think DE`Anthoney Curtis could turn into a WR? When he was in High School I remember a story about a Texas Tech camp he attended where Mike Leach claimed he had better hands then anyone he had on the team!

  136. Ron in Germany Ron in Germany says:

I am afraid Curtis is on the verge of falling thru the cracks.

  137. Blake Blake says:

Here is Harvill’s SO highlights. Unreal how strong this kid is. He is a world bench press record holder, and is only getting bigger by the day pushing that kind of weight.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oxzVPhrbY1s

  138. Big Boi Big Boi says:

Blake, I live in NE Ark and Brad Shearin can flat HIT. He is a lil shorter then what CBP wants in a LB but could fit in nicely at a MLB spot. If that 4.2 time in the 5-10-5 drill is correct that is amazing! To me OL, DL, CB and LB the 5-10-5 drill is a great measuring tool a lot better then a 40 time.(IMO)

  139. Big Boi Big Boi says:

Ron, It does seem that way. I hope he doesn`t turn into a another Brandon Holmes.(all the talent in the world and can`t find a spot)

  140. Piggin out Piggin out says:

Curtis is an acceptional athlete and seems like a good kid. Hope we can find a spot for him for his sake.

  141. Blake Blake says:

Yeah I hope Curtis has been working out hard, and talking with coaches about finding a place on the field.

They seem to really like him, but man we got depth at most of the areas you would think he could jump in.

    Safety is deep now.

LB is getting deeper, but he is short for that spot isn’t he?

    RB is really deep.

But you never know. He was only a sophomore this year. He could have a break out spring and blossom into the player everyone thought he was going to be.

  142. Hawgfan100 Hawgfan100 says:

    “Here is Harvill’s SO highlights.”

The spot where he simply crushes the entire opposing backfield, all three of them at the same time, made a BIG impression. Tell me this kid is getting a long look for the Hogs.

  143. hogfan1509 hogfan1509 says:

I think BP is developing a team loaded with talent to the point that no one has a position handed to him. It’s got to make a world of difference when you have to practice hard and perform when you get the opportunity to ever get a chance to play! I haven’t felt this excited about a team since Sports Illustrated pick the Hogs no 1 all those years ago! It just seems like the pieces are falling in place and we are going to be a team to reccon with for the next several years!

  144. Big Boi Big Boi says:

Richard, Do you have any info on why Mitchell Roberts hasn`t signed yet? Could the Hawgs still be in the mix?

  145. Elmo871 Elmo871 says:

I trust what BP is trying to do, but my question is why they wanna stay away from South Florida because of travel difficulties? Are you kidding? Its a plane ride away with a connection in DFW or Chicago. The regional recruiting doesn’t solve the problem. More concentration on MS? HDN and MSU are locking that place down along with Bama and Auburn. They have to fight with the rest of the SEC for these players.

Texas is one thing, but going in these schools back yard when we are the most westernly SEC school? Isn’t that what we went through this year? Now the kids in AR have to be pursued and reminded how they can have an impact. But were not gonna lock down the top 10 players.

I promise I’m not being negative, but we can’t have another 48th ranked class, no matter how it looked to others. It was still 48th. Ole Piss was 18th!

We were still near the bottom of the SEC. We will be right back here next year talking about this. I guarantee it.

My friend was at the event and said BP was not very inspiring. He said that BP looked like he was there and wanted to get out as soon as he could.

  146. RazorRandy RazorRandy says:

Take into consideration that he is “your friend”.

You can promise all you want, but you come across to me as one of the “Black Shroud of Doom” guys on here. Yep, I read it again. You are without question a “BSD” card holder.

  147. RazorRandy RazorRandy says:

    St. Elmos Fire Sale.

  148. RazorRandy RazorRandy says:

Thank Goodness for me and my fellow SSSS card holders to try to slow you guys down a little.

  149. RazorRandy RazorRandy says:

Now that I reread that, “slow you guys down a little”, sounds a little cruel. I am certain you guys are doing the best you can with what you’ve got.

    My apologies.

  150. Bigfoot Bigfoot says:

St. Elmo, I agree with the numbers game. When you add the *’s you get 48. But I think this class was a little better than that. The DTs and LB are better than their star rating.

As for territory, we have just got to hit Missouri. We got Wingo and Hefley. We had Rainey until grade problems. We did have a run on Lucas and Hill as WRa. There is good talent in that state and we need our share of it. I like that Tulsa is being recruited hard. I like to get in Texas, too. But the problem I am afraaid of is that the kids we need may be picked over by the horns, TAMU, TTech of the OK schools. That would mean that if we got quality, it would be in sleepers. These college coaches are too sharp as to leave many of these sleepers out there.

RD Thanks a million for your work,

  151. Gilmo Gilmo says:

    My two cents, FWIW.

There are two groups of people out there (no, not Nutt-huggers and Nutt-haters). There are those that live for the college football season, such as myself, and are very interested with what happens on and leading up to NSD.

Then there are those that love college football year round, which includes getting ultra-competitive during the height of the recruiting season. Those folks are the ones bemoaning our current recruiting class because A) we got “beat” by everyone in the SEC West, and B) our first game is still seven months away.

I like to wait and find out more about these young men before I start running down the whole class. The more I hear about them (and how CBP evaluated them), the more I like them. The more I hear about how subjective the stars system is (Herndon got 2 stars just because we offered a scholarship), the less stock I put in stars.

Could it be we are just spoiled by the past two classes, which had more high-star athletes? Is it possible that this class will have fewer busts that normal (and busts do occur, e.g. Gary Brashears) because of the high level of character that they possess (which the star system does not measure)? Do I like asking rhetorical questions?

I don’t post much. Only when I feel compelled to share. I like to read everyone’s comments (except for when the sniping occurs; very unpleasant reading regardless of who “hit” who first).

And I too would like to say “Thanks” to Richard. This was my primary source of info throughout the recruiting process.

    God bless y’all! Romans 8:28

  152. Big Boi Big Boi says:

Bigfoot, Missouri is a place we can get two or three kids every year. The university of Missouri is really starting to build a fence around there state tho. Dallas/Fort Worth, North Louisiana and Memphis are places we need to establish ourself. Elmo yes it will be hard beating out the Mississippi schools for their in-state kids, but South Florida has never been good for us. CBP does have some connections in N Florida but CPP did most of the recruiting their so him being gone I think that will hurt us in N FL.

  153. GonzoHog GonzoHog says:

I have no clue why giving up South Florida’s recruiting area would be a mistake.
Miami, Florida and Florida St. pretty much own the best connections down there, and easily have the best acsess to those schools.
SFU has also become a solid contender for some of the better recruits in that area as well. It’s pretty much in there own back yard.
The best players in that area have no reason to leave the state for a program like the UofA. They have all what they need right there.
It makes no sense to waste time and money on those recruits, especially when we have an outstanding class right here in our very own state this year.

The great state of Arkansas, along with Texas,(Dallas/FW and San Antonio areas) N. Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri and the Memphis area, are plenty good to key on for bigtime recruits.

I also don’t believe losing Paul Petrino to Illinois will have a major effect on our recruiting in the N. Florida area.
He was recruiting for his brother’s program all those years, so I have no reason to believe his brother won’t be able to accomplish the same job in that area.

  154. Elmo871 Elmo871 says:

Razor…GO FUCK YOURSELF! Your self righteous comments just go to show on how you think it is your right to be critical towards EVERYONE that comes on here.

The recruiting territories we seek after are already saturated by the other schools. We can’t even get all the good players from our own state. So, you have to go and think outside the box. Go where you never have before. Try harder. Look in Ohio, PA, VA, NY, and got to get into California and Colorado. There is so much talent there. If we don’t try everything we can we cannot get enough players. That’s all I’ve been saying all along. Not being negative, just stating facts. It was apparent that we didn’t get some things right.

By the way Razor….GO FUCK YOURSELF! ASSHOLE!

  155. Elmo871 Elmo871 says:

Sorry Richard, but I will not tolerate someone that continuously bad mouths me and the other posters because they don’t like what you post, when I never do anything to them. Nor do they even know me… Some of these guys that are on here constantly cause they dont have anything better to do need to get a life.

  156. GonzoHog GonzoHog says:

One of the reasons I like this blog is that it is relatively clean (unlike some others, e.g. woopig.net). This is a free country in which your 1st Amendment rights allow you to express yourself, Elmo871. But may I make a request? Please don’t use profanity. We can agree to disagree but if you continue, I guess I’ll have no choice but to not come here anymore.
