Hocker is about to board a plane in LA and plans to talk to John L. Smith tomorrow.

I don’t know much about this young man but as I was reading from some of your post earlier tonight sounds like it would be a pretty good pick up for the Hogs. I know the star ratings aren’t the biggest of issues but what star rating is he???
Richard, is he interested in the Hogs, after such a long wait on an offer?
Duh! CBP and staff lost Russ and we are scrambling to make this class an average class. I do hope Zack sees this as a sincere offer and not a “last minute desperate request to the prom” offer and takes it.
This shouldve been given months ago. Come on Zack!
That’s not a duh answer, Hocker should be upset it took so long to get offered, but he should then choose what he thinks is right.
Does he have offers from other colleges? any from SEC?
No, just Hawaii and A-State, and he might have one from UNC.
Man…I love Arkansas, but Hawaii would be tough to turn down.
Dalton, you are right – Hocker should be upset. I was just saying “Duh” as in Arkansas is desperate and we are scrambling to find anyone who will come here at the position of K/P.
OK, lol, I agree.
Richard, any idea on what way Hocker is feeling?

Didn’t get to talk to him. We traded text messages before he boarded the plane.
This one is really a toss-up. I can see why he wouldn’t, given that he hasn’t gotten any interest until after a previous recruit decommitted. I can also see why he would, given that he’s wanted to be a Hog (or at least that’s what I heard)
I guess we’ll see on 2-3-2010
Thanks Richard, hopefully we’ll here something soon.
I hope we get this young man. He deserves it. I sure hope Petrino learns a lesson in all of this.
Jesus, what arrogance. I hope CP continues to recruit exactly as he has thus far.
MRPRFCT, You have been asking for it for months now hope its not to late. It must be a great feeling to go and spend a weekend being gushed over in Hawaii to land back in the states and get the offer you wanted all along. If Zach turns it down(I don`t think he will) The kid from Jonesboro Weston Cox could be next. Hope Davidell Collins get Williams offer.
I’m very happy for Zach Hocker. The kid has a booming leg. If he comes to Arkansas we will no longer have to worry that every 3rd punt will be a shank.
Richard, Any Chance Davidell Collins gets an offer? And What happend with Paul Crawford thought we were close to landing him a month ago?
Jesus, what arrogance. I hope CP continues to recruit exactly as he has thus far.

What? Get off to a slow start evaluating (including guys in his backyard), get beat by middle of the pack Big 12 teams in the summer, and then have to scramble to fill slots a few days before signing day? You really want that?

Not entirely true. Wasn’t he recruited as a walk-on? Granted, the schollie is a much sweeter deal and I sincerely hope he takes it but I would imagine the coaching staff has not been giving him the cold shoulder up until now only to suddenly “show him some love” with an offer. They probably have been keeping the lines open with him in the event of a defector, i.e. Russ.
Then again, what do I know?
“You really want that?”
Oh absolutely. Watching you and your pals panty bunch your way into low earth orbit over the whims of 18 year olds is simply the icing on the cake.
CBP better be ready I have a feeling if Welch takes a closer look at USF and talks with that silver tongued fox Skip Holtz we`ll lose him as well.(Closer to home and the guaranty of being a WR/RB not a CB)
Wow…this staff is really grasping at straws…Were at 57th in the rankings and falling. As a season ticket holder, it’s very disappointing to see us losing good players and offering scholorships to kids that can barely get a ride at ASU.
We better have a superb season in 2010, or this will repeat again next year. I just wanna know what are we doing or not doing to keep these kids away….this is sad.
And no, the sky isnt falling….
Check out #’s 5 and 6.

If that’s your reason then you’re not much of a Hawg Fan. I’d rather see us recruit better where we are all happy.
pigpoo, thanks for the link. I love what it said about our kicker and Zach. Come on, Zach. Be a Hog!
MRPRFCT, Who would you like to see get the 5 or so offers if we miss on our main targets left?(Jones,Coleman,Robonson)
Hogfan100, I think cbp did a pretty good job evaluating players, considering last week 3 of our players got offers from Lsu, penn st, and texas.
2 of them aren’t our players anymore.
Big Boi, good question. Who would you like to see get offered?
I am so thankful he got the offer…now I hope this great kicker from Pope County becomes a Razorback.
The thing that gets me is if they can talk a player out of coming to Arkansas, why cant we get a player from LSU, Penn St, or Texas talked out of their commitment?
What does that say about our school and staff?
Elmo, it says that we are perceived as a middle-tier SEC team and that the Petrino name isn’t as nationally respected as we thought. A few good years on the field can change that however.
We need to do well next year. We need to be in the hunt for the SEC and we need to be in a New Year’s Bowl. We need Mallett to be in the Heisman race. We need to evaluate sooner than what we did this past year. We need to recruit these Arkansas kids hard and get them committed this summer. Then we can let the success of next season help us get the top out-of-state talent.
We as fans also have to shake the “crazy fanbase” reputation we got from HDNs last two years. That soap opera hurt us and that along with Petrino’s reputation of job-jumping is being used against us in recruiting. If Petrino sticks around I believe we can be that Top 15 team year in and year out.
As I said earlier tonight & Richard & I bhave talked about, Hocker is possibly the best overall kicker this state has seen in a long time & maybe, ever. I think CBP has seen him play at least the 2 Fayetteville-Russellville games during Zack’s Jr. & Sr. years. I bet the Fayetteville Bulldog fans will tell you he can do it all. And Petrino’s son [2 yrs ago] had to be the most frustrated person on the field, having to watch everything that came off Hocker’s foot, going over his head. And with our weight program, his future looks great. Hopefully, it’s not too late.
I would like to see Davidell Collins, Mitchell Roberts, Greg White, Anterio Sloan, Sean Watson and Tremondae Branch get the offers.(I think Roberts could turn into a DT project)
“If that’s your reason then you’re not much of a Hawg Fan.”
Gee, that really smarts, coming from a ‘fan’ like you…
“I’d rather see us recruit better where we are all happy.”
I seriously doubt you will ever be truly happy with the recruiting performance of any staff (not headed by you, that is).
“2 of them aren’t our players anymore.”
No fair cryin’ over spilt milk.
C’est la vie, C’est la guerre.
“We as fans also have to shake the “crazy fanbase” reputation…”
Heh-he, goood luck on that.
“We need to do well next year. We need to be in the hunt for the SEC and we need to be in a New Year’s Bowl. We need Mallett to be in the Heisman race. I sure hope Petrino’s paying you what this advice is worth. What’s that you say? You’re not getting paid? I feel better about Petrino: he obviously knows he needn’t pay anyone else for stuff he’s already figured out for himself.
Richard,
Why are they going after a 2nd kicker? What do they plan to do with Eduardo Camara and hocker?
MacAttak6,
Eduardo Camara will be for field goals and Zack Hocker for punts and kicking off.
I think everyone knows by now Zack Hocker has a very strong leg.
I don’t know CBP’s reasoning for offering William Russ first, but I’m sure he had a legitimate reason, just like Russ had his reasons for decommiting from the UofA and recommiting to Texas.
Sometimes things just don’t always work out as planned, but as far as CBP learning a lesson, Jay? You really need to quit smoking the mo-jo. Seriously.
Let’s all just hope Zack Hocker becomes a Hog.
Hocker–Is he a combo like Russ?–could be kicker or punter?
We have missed so badly on kickers past few years–we have got to get kick-offs at least to the goal line — punting was horrible. Almost cost us the bowl game.
All the negative nellies on this site need to get a grip. I guess Coach could use all of you as consultants to see how better to recruit, dear Lord!
El Dorado Flash,
from everything that’s been reported, Hocker and Russ are very much alike.
Both have super strong legs and can put the ball into the endzone consistantly.
Also, they both have really good hangtime with their booming punts.
I believe Eddie Camara will be the primary FG kicker.
I still hope and believe Alex Tejada can turn into an excellent FG kicker next season.
I don’t nessesarily believe Camara is being brought in to replace him, but to create competition at that position and develope another FG kicker for the future.
I seriously doubt you will ever be truly happy with the recruiting performance of any staff (not headed by you, that is).

I was here last year and you have always been negative.
our recruiting class blows
I agree. I didn’t post on the blog last year but always read and you were negative last year. In fact, your negativity is a small part of the reason I first posted on the blog this fall. How can you say the staff was slow about evaluating instate talent? They have known about Z.Hocker they just thought Russ was a better fit (as did Maimi, UNC, Texas, Vandy etc.) so they offered Russ. Hocker got his offer and for our sake I hope he is as begrudged as some of our fans are about instate recruiting.
The goal is to get the best players availabe regardless of where they are from. hopefully Hocker chooses the hogs. I’m sure he is excited and isn’t as spiteful as some of you posters.

You must have been posting under another name, but here is one thing I said about last year’s class:
Yea Ron, I can’t wait to see these guys wearing Razorback red.

I didn’t say I was posting. I was here last year and you have always been negative.
HogInBama, we have a great instate class next year. Other schools have offered some of those kids before we have. That should never happen. Coach Horton himself said it was important to recruit Arkansas. Do you agree that it’s easier to make Arkansas kids Razorbacks than it is to make out-of-state kids Razorbacks. I’m not saying offer the ones that aren’t good enough. I’m just saying evaluate these kids before Malzahn, Nutt, and Stoops do.
This site cracks me up. So many “self imposed experts” talking about how bad this class is. How can someone expect a subjective action to provide a definitive result? The “stars” are subjective ratings based on many different things. The only true result is to put the kid on the field and see what he can do. Look at Notre Dame. Some of the highest ranked classes over the last few years and they could only finish in the middle of the pack time after time.
Rather than rating a kids abilities based on some made up “star” rating, give them a chance on the field. I feel CBP is taking talent, not star ratings. Look at it without the “If we don’t get 5 stars then we are doomed” attitude and instead, let’s give the class a chance to develop. Go back in history and look at how many of your greatest pro players were 5 star recruits. There are plenty of 3 stars that are now hall of famers.
BTW…what in the world did a coach do before the ratings system came along? It wouldn’t surprise me if some on here can’t believe Bear Bryant, Frank Broyles, Darrell Royal, and others were able to win championships without the star ratings. I don’t believe the star measures heart and intangibles on a kid and that is an area one must have to be successful.
Oh yea, negative like saying we’d go 7-5 and to the Liberty Bowl because our defense was average and our OL needed to improve and our QB was young. I recall everyone wanted me banned for that one.
It doesn’t matter how much or what you know. You’re still an ass.
Now that’s negative!

Try this one on then. I am positive you’re an ass.
You are the one always saying “I just tell the facts.” Well, the fact is, you are what you are. An ass !
That’s fine. Sticks and stones ya know. I won’t stoop to that level however.
Richard, do you think Hocher will make that call?
Just curious how many of you so called “experts” donate to the scholarship fund, buy season tickets or even go to the games with a ticket you paid for?
Im watching some of the games from last year. Man, we’re gonna have an explosive offense.
I wanted you banned way before you ever made that statement, Radio Jay.
Your the one guy we all hate the most because of your undeniable arrogance.
Your comments are very informative at times, but you seem to think it’s all about you.
I just don’t know. I’ve been trying to figure out what your problem is longer than I even care to remember.
Gonzo, you post about me so much I think it is about me. Keep it on the Razorbacks like I do.
Jake Bequette is gonna have to get double-teamed.
oink2u2,
I do. I have. I will.
Gonzo, It’s always about him {Radio}
Jake Bequette, DD Jones, Alfred Davis, and a DE could be formidable DL. I wonder if Caleb Evans is ready to have a break-out year.
I know he has ran off several good posters. Portie, Ron in Germany, SouthArkHogFan, even Blake left for awhile. They all had more knowledge than Radio. Those are just the some of the names who have said they were leaving. God knows how many just left.
He’s trying to hurt the Arkansas Fan Base (which is the Arkansas Razorback’s strength), cripple our recruiting base (which is any program’s “life blood”, and cause friction between the fans and our coaches (which might prompt them, if they are successful here, to go somewhere else) because he’s not one of us but a spy for some other team always causing trouble. That’s the only logical reason for MrP and all his aliases because on one could be that negitive and/or stupid. You should come to my blog site at http://www.thoughts.com/OKOFCOURSE/blog log in and hit the favorites button and make comments during the Arkansas/Georgia game this Wednesday where MrP and all his other clones will be baned!!!!
The average player in this class is rated higher than in most classes, so I don’t know why some seem to think that we are “settling for less”. One of the reasons we are missing on more recruits is because we are aiming higher, which would seem to be what most of us want. And I couldn’t care any less what this class is ranked, because most every ranking system that I’ve ever seen was extremely flawed and mostly relied on subjectivity for a measuring stick. Anyone who believes that rivals knows our team needs better than our coaches is crazy, but rivals team ranking system relies on the notion that it does.
Hocker has no reason to be offended that he wasn’t the first choice, but every reason to be proud that he was offered a scholarship to his state’s flagship university. The notion that our coaches are supposed to offer every in-state player a scholarship first is crazy and incompatible with the goal of signing the best players available.
No one said that we should to offer every instate player.
You guys really need to get a life. You have commented all through the night. Do you not have jobs? Creeps…
Mississippi State hung with us for awhile. Does anyone suspect they’ll be better next year and could the MSU game be a “trap” game?
MRP instate recruiting is the life blood of programs ike Texas, Bama, UF, UGA. Arkansas produces some good players but not nearly enough to supply a winning SEC program or pacify the fans who feel like we should be taking 10-15 instate kids a year. My only argument was that instate kids who are certain to commit sometimes don’t get early offers in favor of the out of state kid who is a better fit for the program. You know how that works.
We now have a coach who won’t just take what he can get and go home. We are going toe to toe with some of the big boys and winning our fair share (ex. Wingo, DD, David Gordon, etc.) We win some and will lose maybe even more but I have confidence CBP will get what we need to grow as a program. At the end of the day that is the only thing that will keep his job. You can sign 25 instate kids every year and if you don’t win that means nothing.
After thinking about it I think the reason we weren’t as successful this year in recruiting (say what you will but this class is nothing compared to last year’s) is because 1. we didn’t have a strong instate class 2. we couldn’t use playing time as a selling point.
We didn’t do that bad this year in filling depth. If you break it down by position we only didn’t do well at DT, OL and IMO QB. We should get a bigtime QB every year. I suspect Walker won’t be a QB his entire stay at Arkansas.
we sure have a lot of know it all recruiters on this board. I believe the coaches know what they are doing. I really dont see where they are grasping at straws. Most of the recruits are ones that they offered first and early. You will get a few and lose a few. that is part of the game. I believe if all the ones complaining that never see film knew as much as they thought they did, they would be coaching in college instead of begging for players most have never seen play before.
Good morning! I Love the Hogs! It’s going to be a great week, the start of a great 2010 season! It won’t be perfect but we need to enjoy it. It’s the start of something big at UA!
Yes, Miss. St. could be a trap game.
Anyone have any new news on Scott Smith? What are the chances he ends up with the Hogs?

When we’re up to par with other bigtime programs, which won’t be real soon, we’ll get a bigtime QB every year.

oic, Thanks !
I will have to admit that BP could end up a genious with regard to the K/punter recruiting. Until Hawaii came along, there is no question BP liked Russ the best and made him top priority knowing that he could fall back on Hocker(tremendous fall back to have).
The La Tech, Tn Techs, Ark States and such are middies that don’t have much chance of beating us out, but “Johnney come lately” Rainbows offer a real change-up for a country kid.
BP was a genious up until recently – both Russ’ & Hockers last offer before NSD created a major detour. I can’t say that I wouldn’t have done it differently, except the instaters need to take a slightly bigger priority. If Jake can boom 70+% of the koffs out of the endzone, he would prove to be one of the most valuable players next season.
By the time we play MSU we should be 10-0, 9-1, or at worst 8-2. LSU should be pretty good and that game may be for the West division. MSU seems to always give us trouble, especially in Starksville. I’m glad they don’t have Anthony Dixon anymore.
Good morning, I see all the naysayers are already fired up and ready for the day!
MSU will be tough. Mullen has them heading in the right direction. Florida and, in particular, Same Ole Miss found out winning in Starkville is never easy. BP also has to show he can win on the road in the SEC.
B9, does that mean I can’t come to your little Ark-UGa party?
Jake Bequette is gonna be an All-American before he leaves Arkansas.
One thing for sure, by the time we play MSU we will have given Nutt the first of several yearly butt kickings! Egg bowl looks to be scrambled next year! MSU set to dominate Ole Piss and Ark set to dominate both! Go Hogs!
Considering MSU hasn’t got any QBs with proven passing ability, combined with the fact that Dixon is gone helps, but playing a tough defense on the road is what scares me.
All it would take is an INT, a fumbled snap and a blocked punt and we could find ourselves in some real trouble.
Anyone see Cara Capuano in HD? Has Jill Arrington retired?
Nah, those Miss boys will be whimps for years to come! However it is true that of the two Miss St is the one not to overlook! They are going to dominate Nutt, just watch!
So who fills in for Petrus’ spot? Who starts at RB?
Man, Ramon Broadway isn’t very fast. I doubt he starts next year.
It would certainly help if MSU continues to be one-dimensional (but expect Mullen to everything he can to mitigate that liability).
Hopefully this team continues to mature in the off season. We did an excellent job of taking care of the ball last year, and when miscues or big plays struck, the team didn’t hang their head nearly as much as they would have in the past.
I think we do a much better job on the road next year and teams who get to play us at home better watch out: they stand to have an even tougher row to hoe in 2010.
Z Thomas and Knile Davis
Minor problems upside those facing Nutt! He’s reached his top, nowhere to go but down! Hogs on the other hand are rising fast!
Lord, I need a drink, and…………………I don’t drink!
DVD, those were my guesses too. I really like how Knile runs the ball. Not a knock against Petrus, but Thomas may be an upgrade.
Smile, just trying to give BP a little respite from all the lessons being served up!
lol…ANOTHER kicker offer. good. lets get a top notch kicker
I doubt Broadway will start, however I feel our secondary will be the most improved unit on the whole team next year. Ruddell Crim, David Gordon, Darius Winston, and Isaac Madison will all be in the rotation in front of Broadway..IMO
Russ was payback for Cobi, pure and simple! I still think we came out ahead, especially if we can get Hocker!
BigHogFan, I believe that too.
We need another punter. We missed on our evaluation of Forester last year.
I agree for once with Mr. P, weak in-state class and inability to promise playing time cost us certainly a few players.
Thinking about the ones that hurt, mainly (IMO) it’s Scott Smith (who might end up a Razorback yet, in a long and winding road) and Russ. I’m sure Dyer would have been a great addition and added a lot of dazzle to the class rating, but we all know his playing time would have been severely limited for several years. We just have too many solid running backs.
If we can bring in B. Jones and McKnight, along with one big offensive lineman, I think this class will be stellar (meaning starry).
I JUST TEXTED MY FRIEND ZACH HOCKER HE SAID ITS BETWEEN ARKANSAS & ARK ST!!!!!!!
but i have know him for 16 years i think he will sign with the hogs
Russ was payback for Cobi, pure and simple! I still think we came out ahead, especially if we can get Hocker!
By hogfan1509 on Feb 1, 2010 @ 9:20am
——————————–
Why ? Cobi is from Texarkana and he was already commited to us when Texas offered.
Thanks RUSSELLVILLEBOI. Keep us posted.
Secondary was best unit on defense last year! They were tasked with covering top notch receivers and backing up the line play of our LBs and DL. I don’t know that our defensive front will be a team leader next year, but strongly feel that improvements will be made! Our opponents next year will definitely need to be more creative and take more chances to move the ball!
I really liked the way Issac Madison was playing before he injured his knee last pre-season. It seemed like he was ready for a solid season.
I hope he’s able to come back at full strength.
I believe the reason BP offered Russ first, was not just because he thought he was so much better, but rather he plays for a team LOADED with talent we are recruiting from NOW ON. He is trying to start
a trend of recruiting Northern La as well as Evangel. If he can
get multiple players on campus from LA it could open up a pipeline
to UA.
Cobi was wanted by Texas and we got in the way, reverse that with Russ this year!
This is my thoughts on why we don’t get the commits we want. BP tells a player the truth. And other coaches tell a player things to make him feel good. Which always sounds better than the truth.
Petrino needs to learn to make players feel good while telling the truth. Maybe hire a motivational speaker will help. IMHO
I’ll check back in later guys. Let’s all keep our fingers crossed for a Zack Hocker verbal commitment!
GO HOGS GO, BABY!!!!!
No way Mack Brown wanted to appear to lose to the Hogs at the last minute in back to back seasons! Russ got the royal treatment in Austin! Believe this, there are the elite teams and they know BP has a really good chance to unseat one of them in the next few years. They will use extra effort to lure BPs recruits and spread all the negativity possible to keep that from happening! Look for Texas, Ala, Fla and several others to be a thorn in the Hogs side in the future! It ;s the price you pay for wanting to be one of the big boys! Can we stand up to them and become one of them? I think with BP we have a really good shot!
