As long as there aren’t any new suspensions for this game, I’ll go with the Hogs to win.
blake stole my prediction of a 6 point win earlier, so I’m with you, blake.

  2. yellcohog yellcohog says:

I like our chances tonight. Pelphrey seemed pritty confident when asked about Florida earlier.

  3. belpazhog belpazhog says:

We have a chance to win and play a good game if the players stick to their roles in the team. No one on this team should be shooting 3 pointers except Rotnei Clarke. Welch, Fortson and Washington should not be shooting 3 pointers. I still need to see a play where a screen is set for Rotnei to take a shot. Get the ball inside to Washington and Powell. Go Hogs !!!

  4. hogfan1509 hogfan1509 says:

Anyone hear about 2 basketball players getting in trouble on Tuesday night and possibly suspended for tonights game. There’s a thread on hogville, but no-one is saying for-sure names (someone threw out Bryant & Fortson, but no guarantee) or what they did. Only bit of info is that 1 is a starter. Someone else said that both might play anyway and it might not be that serious of an issue.

Just seein if anyone had anything more in-depth.

Got this off another thread, hope it’s not true!

  5. Joe (not my real name) Joe (not my real name) says:

Belpazhog, I was wondering about the screen thing for Rotnei too. I asked someone real close to the program about this and this is their response. “We run a continual motion offense of which screens are not used in abundance for any particular player. We get open looks out of this type of offense and will use screens on the weakside.” Hope this helps.

  6. yellcohog yellcohog says:

They did’nt say anything about it on Drive Time sports, butIdid’nt get to listen to the whole show.

  7. razorpride89 razorpride89 says:

I’m glad its not true! Thanks hogfan!

  8. dwp007 dwp007 says:

I still don’t think the Razorbacks have the depth to hang with these guys – though they will next year ;) I was wrong about the Alabama game and REALLY hope to be wrong again, tonight. Gators win it, late.

  9. razorpride89 razorpride89 says:

Totally misread, hogfan. I’m in class on my phone and couldn’t read clearly..

  10. hogfan1509 hogfan1509 says:

Haven’t heard anything else, think it may be an unfounded rumor. On the game, I think the Hogs have a really good shot at the Gators tonight. We’re on a bit of an upswing and they’ve had some problems. I think the Hogs win by 5 in a hard fought game!

  11. arkcoachnwaiting arkcoachnwaiting says:

This is another sign of why Pelphrey isn’t the man for the job. If you have a shooter as special as Clarke running screens for him will only open up not only himself but other players. We have no screen the screener play at all in our half court sets. If Pel was a smart man at all he’d run a two man game on one side of the floor with a penetrate and pitch with Fortson and Clarke. Just give those two one side of the floor and go to work. That continual motion offense is going to force future SG recruits to run for the hills and not come play for us. IMO

  12. Piglett Piglett says:

Can we find a way to bench welsh!!

  13. Piglett Piglett says:

    DDRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

  14. Piglett Piglett says:

Florida looks bad!! We look bad!

  15. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

    I’d rather he just graduates.

  16. PeytonHillisFTW PeytonHillisFTW says:

can we get some defense please?

  17. Piglett Piglett says:

Fortson is not hustling back after he is hacked on the lay-ups! #11 is killing us!!

  18. RazorRandy RazorRandy says:

He must be too tired to after heaving all of those bricks.

  19. Piglett Piglett says:

    he and welsh….

  20. Piglett Piglett says:

    boom boom …firepower!

  21. TxHogFan59 TxHogFan59 says:

We are getting better. I think Pelphrey is doing the right thing off the court, but on the court, I’m just not sure. I hear about a good recruiting class coming in next year. But, do we have another group of kids coming in that constantly need Pelphrey to suspend them to get their attention? I want to think if we give him time we will get to the top again. I just don’t see the fundamentals. Too many turnovers, bad shots and bad defense. I really don’t want to be negative all the time. I am a hog fan through and through. I don’t have to have a national championship this year or next. I just want to get excited again that there is a Razorback game on TV and WANT to watch it. I’m SITTING here watching this game and I used to be WALKING THE FLOOR the whole game. My attitude is 180 degrees from what it used to be. If they win great, if they lose, oh well another loss. Tennessee had 4 players suspended and they still beat Kansas. We say, WELL we have a very short bench with all the players suspended. Just wait until we get them back. I’m still waiting……

  22. TxHogFan59 TxHogFan59 says:

Did everyone go to bed? I haven’t seen a post in awhile.

  23. belpazhog belpazhog says:

What happened to Nobles? Why is he not playing while Fortson is resting? I thought he is the backup to Fortson?

  24. TxHogFan59 TxHogFan59 says:

    Where is Clark?????

  25. Piglett Piglett says:

Any Jimmy Dykes fans out there?? I can’t stand him!!

  26. TxHogFan59 TxHogFan59 says:

I am a Jimmy Dykes fan.

  27. Piglett Piglett says:

Hello Clarke!! nice rebound and a sweet trey!

  28. Piglett Piglett says:

He sounds like one of those golf commentators who tell you what the guy did wrong AFTER the shot!

  29. Piglett Piglett says:

I like the student net hats!

  30. Piglett Piglett says:

    SHWWWWEEEETTTT!

  31. Matt Matt says:

Nolan would have benched half this team with the lazy defense these guys are playing. Pitiful.

  32. PeytonHillisFTW PeytonHillisFTW says:

Everyone remember, this is Pelphrey’s team now — all healthy and on the floor. If we cant win this game, we cant go .500 in SEC play. Depressing.

  33. Matt Matt says:

And YES I do mis Nolan R. I would take him back in a heartbeat.
Okay now, let me have it!

  34. PeytonHillisFTW PeytonHillisFTW says:

we have a few talented players but too many weak links, especially when Washington gets in foul trouble and our lazy defense

  35. PeytonHillisFTW PeytonHillisFTW says:

Walker getting wide open three pointers

  36. belpazhog belpazhog says:

Pelphrey has no answer or defense for a 5’11 guy. Pitiful.

  37. Matt Matt says:

It starts with their footwork. They get off balance to easily and are then “shaked and baked”.

  38. Piglett Piglett says:

Question…. When does spring ball start??

  39. PeytonHillisFTW PeytonHillisFTW says:

    46 secs to get 4 points…we lose

  40. PeytonHillisFTW PeytonHillisFTW says:

the arkansas basketball situation makes me wish football season got here even earlier

  41. dochog dochog says:

I am a UA grad from 88-93. I may be slightly biased because of the success of the basketball teams while I was there, but there are two comments that I feel compelled to make. First, I must not understand the concept of a motion offense that we supposedly run. I never see many people moving. Secondly, I am at a complete loss of words for how little athleticism and talent we have had the past few years, including the current team. When we play really good teams, it looks like an 8th grade team playing the varsity. It is so painful to see how far down this program is. The sad part is that I don’t really see much hope for improvement any time soon.

  42. Matt Matt says:

Fla players, heck players from every team we have played are so calm and relaxed. There is nothing relaxed are confident about our team and our play on either end of the court.

  43. Piglett Piglett says:

Farmer’s pass on the inbound after the timeout kicked us in the nutts!

  44. Matt Matt says:

Thank goodness for Van Horn and the boys of summer.

  45. PeytonHillisFTW PeytonHillisFTW says:

One more loss = more lost confidence in John Pelphrey.

We need to start putting feelers out for a new coach now considering the time it took us to find one last time around. We have players that a coach can come in and win with though

  46. Matt Matt says:

Will we win even 12 games this year???

  47. DIEHARDHOG DIEHARDHOG says:

Hog fans can only take so much of this

I like Pel, but he is not getting it done

Hope he figures it out, these guys are so spotty

  48. DIEHARDHOG DIEHARDHOG says:

my comment is awaiting moderation? what is that?

  49. dwp007 dwp007 says:

    No bench… no remedy.

  50. PeytonHillisFTW PeytonHillisFTW says:

John Pelphrey said he needed all his players healthy and playing (ie. not suspended).

Well they are, and we lose a game where we were only a 2 point underdog by double digits and we start off SEC play 1-2….brilliant.

  51. Matt Matt says:

Peyton I know this is completely unrealistic, but I would like to see what Nolan could do with this team, if he had a couple of weeks to prepare. If only Emeka Okafor had picked us instead of Uconn and Frank had retired earlier, things might have been different with our basketball program.

  52. PeytonHillisFTW PeytonHillisFTW says:

I know someone could come in and win with these players right now. I’m increasingly less convinced John Pelphrey is that guy. Fortson – Clarke – Washington – Powell, these are not scrub players.

I dont know why i keep watching these games and putting myself through this.

  53. JDHogSooooie JDHogSooooie says:

Sheesh, those turnovers and errant shots at the end were PATHETIC. Not saying the refs were bad the whole game (called it pretty even on both sides) but some of those fouls weren’t even close.

And I don’t know what it is, but it seems like EVERY team that plays us, can step on the court and shoot it from the ‘snout’ and make the dang 3. Our 3pt D sucks.

Hogs need some more bodies. Cox on the floor in late game situation = ….well, I don’t know what is equal to that….nothing good I guess.

  54. PeytonHillisFTW PeytonHillisFTW says:

Admittedly, that basketball coaching search had to be one of the biggest debacles in the history of coaching searches. WE pretty much all want or wanted Pelphrey to succeed obviously, but i guess that was unrealistic considering our choices of qualified coaches.

  55. PeytonHillisFTW PeytonHillisFTW says:

Despair is the only word i have for our basketball program right now. Pelphrey assured of 2 more years according to A.D. Jeff Long, and we have no replacement for Mike Washington. If we think we can win more games next year than this year, i think we are kidding ourselves.

How can we expect talented in-state talent to commit to Arkansas under these situations??? Isn’t it the time to act before things continue to spiral out of control?

  56. PeytonHillisFTW PeytonHillisFTW says:

    next comes Kentucky…..lol

  57. Wisconsin Hawg Wisconsin Hawg says:

I’m getting that Stan Heath kind of feeling…I hope Pelphrey can prove me wrong but I am losing confidence. I went to U of A when Eddie was finishing and Nolan came in. These last two young coaches just don’t seem to have what it takes to play on the big stage in the SEC…

    Go Piggies!

  58. hogfan1509 hogfan1509 says:

I know Long said two years but if attendance continues to drop and we don’t get several good wins from what is left of this season I imagine we;; be looking for a new coach in the off season. Pel’s a good guy but he just isn’t showing alot of goaching ability with this team! To me we don’t get beat so much as we beat ourselves! Anyway, tomorrows another day! Go Hogs!

  59. Jon Jon says:

Thanks for the recruiting updates. I think Arkansas is going to have a good class coming in. The nay-sayers have been at Petrino so far for this draft class, but I believe he will get these recruits in to tip top form.

    razorbackyak.blogspot.com

  60. joshua joshua says:

We lose so many close games because we only have one guy who can knock down an outside jumper from more than 17 feet. It seems that every other team I’ve watched this year has at least 3 or 4 (and sometimes 5) guys that you have to guard at the end of a game. We have one!

I actually think Pelphrey is a decent game manager. More often than not I like the way he subs (except for when he puts in Welsh). He calls time-outs at really good moments. He uses the “offense-for-defense” substitutions well among other things. However, I think he is not a very good “game-planner”, or “schemer” (is schemer a real word?).

It seems like we have one option on offense and when that first option doesn’t work then we fall apart. Also, when a teams counters what we’re doing, we don’t seem to be able to counter back with something else. That comes down to creativity and game-planning. Maybe we need Petrino as an assistant basketball coach. He can find weaknesses and exploit them!

I do like some of our incoming recruits and the “Big Three” from Arkansas in 2011 will be huge too. We really need to find a way to land them…I know, let’s hire one of their High School coaches as an assistant! Oh wait, that probably won’t work out either.

  61. dwp007 dwp007 says:

Look.. guys.. I hate this shi* as much as anyone. Yet, we have absolutely no bench – at least in a quality sort of way. It’s hard to play a pressing defense and NOT stand around, with no bench. That is all subject to change, next year, in terms of the talented recruits who have committed.

Pel clearly walked into a messy situation following Stan Heath and the one day coach, who wasn’t, from Creighton or wherever. He lost six seniors at the same time, in addition to Patrick Beverly.

This is going to be a difficult year. There’s just no getting around it. However, with the guys here and those coming in, next year should be totally different.

Given the glory days of past, I know it’s a hard thing to do, but be patient. By this time next year, Pel will have this program back on track. Though as frustrated as much as anyone, I truly believe that.

  62. PeytonHillisFTW PeytonHillisFTW says:

and who do we have coming in exactly?

  63. dwp007 dwp007 says:

“Early signees for next season include Rickey Scott and Mardracus Wade, both guards who have four-star ratings with at least one of the recruiting services, as well as Marvel Walthe, a 6-9 junior college player who is a big, strong small forward. They are working on a center.” – as per Wally Hall and several recruiting services.

    Bedtime for me.

    Go Hogs!

  64. Blake Blake says:

we have some bad azz players coming next year. two tall guards that can score and that are rated among the best defenders in the entire class in scott and wade. then waithe who is big time juco player with size and inside out game. then to close it out we will land either the no 1 juco player in the nation in ratliff or a 5 star hs player in coleman.

  65. DVD DVD says:

    4* Rickey Scott …..SG .. 6-3 . 195 – Irving, TX
    3* Mardracus Wade …SG .. 6-2 . 170 – Chatham, VA
    3* Marvell Waithe ..SF .. 6-9 . 216 – Tallahassee, FL JUCO

    And Possibly:

    4* Ricardo Ratliffe..PF .. 6-9 . 220 -(Central Florida)Ocala, FL JUCO

  66. Ron in Germany Ron in Germany says:

    4* Rickey Scott …. SG .. 6-3 . 195 – Irving, TX
    3* Mardracus Wade .. SG .. 6-2 . 170 – Chatham, VA
    3* Marvell Waithe .. SF .. 6-9 . 216 – Tallahassee, FL JUCO

    And Possibly:

    4* Ricardo Ratliffe..PF .. 6-9 . 220 -(Central Florida)Ocala, FL JUCO

  67. razorpride89 razorpride89 says:

Ratliffe would be a huge impact. I think a major selling point to him is immediate playing time, no doubt.

  68. mudhog mudhog says:

Somebody tell me why Marcus Britt all of a sudden think he’s a good shooter? IMO he’s not even skilled enough to ride the pine! I hear he plays pretty good defense but I see otherwise! He aint the only problem on this team but he sure aint helping!

I don’t care what anyone says, this year has to be Pelphrey’s last year! Out of our past 14 signees, 11 of them have been busts! We don’t need much more evidence than that to see that Pelphrey can’t recruit. Some say we have a pretty good class coming in next year but I think we’ve heard those words before. Just like we heard Jemal Farmer is one of the better players in the country! Really???

I would have a little sympathy for Pelphrey if he showed that he’s trying to rectify our recruiting woes by letting go of an assitant coach or two but he’s pretty much kept the same staff from day one! It looks like Pelphrey is satisfied with the results he’s getting out of the basketball program! Guys and Gals gather around, it’s time for a new head man of the University of Arkansas basketball program!!!

  69. poch punt poch punt says:

Just got home from game. Boys played hard. Washington’s foul trouble really hurt. Need just one player to step up other than Clark, Fortson, Washington, and Powell. Believe we are getting closer with each game. Have confidence with this team. Hate Thursday-Saturday format. Just not enough time between games. Florida will make some noise. Their pretty darn good.

  70. J. Newton J. Newton says:

Has anyone heard how mid-week trip went for dude from Olive Branch?

  71. Quinn Quinn says:

Long knows that it would be premature to pull the rug out from under Pelphrey just yet. We will see how this season pans out, then see how next year’s class contributes before we start freaking out. There were fewer empty seats tonight than any other game this year and the crowd was very into it at times, but we did not give it 100%, other than the student section. Give Donovan credit for calling timeouts every time the crowd began to roar. Our crowd has got to give this team a full game of support and we will have better chances to win. We put more energy into booing the refs than supporting the Razorbacks.

Has anyone heard anyting about Brandon Mitchell? I thought he was looking good early on, and he provided some much needed depth.

  72. Chog Chog says:

Dwp007 you must be confused. Pelphrey didn’t lose 6 seniors the year he got here. He took that team to the NCAA tournament and we won our 1st round game before getting blown out by UNC.

Also, can anybody please explain to me what mess Pelphrey walked into? He had a team that went to back to back NCAA tournaments? He then had 6 scholarships open up and didn’t use them wisely AT ALL. He didn’t have to use them all at once, but he darn sure tried!

I don’t get this at all with some people? Please do your research before you post this stuff. It doesn’t make any sense. Pelphrey didn’t walk into a mess he has created a mess for himself and it seems some folks are just flat out BLIND to it for some weird reason.

Arkansas is now 3-17 over the last 2 years in SEC play with HIS RECRUITS. I’m very confused with the excuse making by some people around here. Even if we go 500 in SEC play we will have back to back losing seasons.

  73. mudhog mudhog says:

Mitchell is going to focus on football!

  74. There are two things that bother me. Number one: We take too many bad shots. Fortson is the point guard–he should be distributing the ball and not shooting so much. He is not a good shooter. Neither is Welsh. The players on this team do not seem to know their role. When teh Bulls won their championships everyone knew his role. Cartwright was there to get rebounds and score garbage points. He knew not to take 15 shots a game. Rodman was there for rebounds. He knew not to take too many threes. Paxon was a three point artist. The offense went through Jordan or Pippen. Rotnei is the shooter and other players should work to get him his shots. Why is Welsh shooting 3′s? Number two: Why can’t we defend against the three? We are not playing smart. I don’t understand. Maybe those guys are doing the best they can and Pel is doing what he can with what he has to work with.

  75. razorpride89 razorpride89 says:

    Chog,

Time and time again it has been explained that yes, he did walk into a mess. If it wasn’t a mess, why did Heath get fired? Exactly. Pel came in & recruited 2 top 20 teams. The hogs would have been ok in Pel’s second year if they had not lost 89% of their scoring from year 1, which included the 6 seniors & 1 junior-to-be in the academically ineligible Patrick Beverly. (That’s probably what hurt the team most, losing Beverly) But, the recruits that were brought in were sour apples. They looked really good on the outside, but weren’t on the inside. The way these kids acted, which got them suspended, can not be blamed on Pel. A coach can not forsee how players are going to act when they get to one of the nations top party schools. So, when those players got suspened a countless number of times, they didn’t quite like the authority that was used and left the team.

So, as I said before, if you want to blame Pel for the players that he brought in being bad pick-ups, then I would love for you or anyone to join the Hogs as a consultant–so you can predict how 18 year old boys are going to act when they get to campus.

Thank you and I approve this message.

  76. razorpride89 razorpride89 says:

Are those facts good enough? Cuz I didn’t see any presented in yours, other than your boy Stan Heath’s recruits getting blown out by UNC in the tourney.

  77. RazorRandy RazorRandy says:

I don’t know. Clarke was involved in a car accident. He was sore or he would have made everything from everywhere. Word is that CJP caused the accident.

  78. PeytonHillisFTW PeytonHillisFTW says:

“Florida will make some noise. Their pretty darn good.

    ——————

Are you delusional? Florida was so good that they scored only 71 points against a lousy Arkansas defense, and only 28 in the first half.

Don’t kid yourself into thinking that Arkansas’ loss is excusable because Florida is better than their record indicates. I don’t mind logical optimism, but am sick of this delusional brand of optimism.

  79. PeytonHillisFTW PeytonHillisFTW says:

For those who are excited about next year’s class I would remind them of how things have gone with the past couple of classes.

Sure the incoming class may look good on paper, but how many of them have character issues we have yet to uncover? How many will be suspended for multiple games? How many will simply lack the drive to play D-1 College Basketball effectively? How many will end up transferring to other places?, Etc.

  80. RazorRandy RazorRandy says:

    Go, Jay jr., go!

  81. BAM BAM says:

Why is there such a dark cloud over this team?

  82. RazorRandy RazorRandy says:

I really hate to condone this, but you may want to go ahead and slit your wrists (both of them), don’t screw it up like anyone associated with The University of Arkansas might.

  83. poch punt poch punt says:

Combined with Washington’s foul problems and some of the match up problems in size we had with Florida was key to our rebounding problems. Clark was at times guarding player much bigger. We were forced to rotate defensive help and that caused problems rebounding. I reiterate, we are 100% improved from a month ago. Have patience, if we stay healthy and continue to compete we will be ok. I think the league is a lot better than their being credited. Britt played some good defense, he needs to relieve some of the offensive pressure being put on other players. Bryant might see more PT. I was at the game and felt we competed very well minus a few careless errors. Clark 35 min. Fortson 38 min. is asking a lot.

  84. PeytonHillisFTW PeytonHillisFTW says:

Randy, randy, randy. Ya see the difference between you and me is that I don’t feel compelled to slit my wrists because I know how to manage my expectations. It is interesting that you your mind would go there though, you may want to seek therapy.

  85. RazorRandy RazorRandy says:

It wasn’t my wrists I was refering to. I was refering to yours, so that hopefully none of us would have to listen to your DOOMSDAY BS anymore.

  86. RazorRandy RazorRandy says:

    *referring

  87. PeytonHillisFTW PeytonHillisFTW says:

Ok Randy, lets hear your prediction on how many wins Arkansas will have next year in basketball …

  88. PeytonHillisFTW PeytonHillisFTW says:

Also, Randy I would suggest that you not advise people who disagree with you to commit suicide. It makes you look like a real douchebag, just trying to help your public image here and give you a few hints.

  89. RazorRandy RazorRandy says:

Next year, while important to all of us, will not be the tell tale year for the program. As Mr. Long agrees, we need @ least 2 more years to right this ship (which had severe hull damage and was in danger of sinking into the abyss).

I agree with the approach to get it done the right way. I also believe CJP is the guy to do it. My comment to you and others is: grab a rope (to help secure a sail), or walk the plank! You impress me as a guy that likes to stand on a short board.

  90. RazorRandy RazorRandy says:

Who said anything about suicide? I only hoped that you would slice the tendons to keep you off of the keyboard. Wow, SUICIDE? sounds like YOU need therapy.

  91. RazorRandy RazorRandy says:

Oh, and by the way, if I ever feel like I need a consultant on my ‘public image’, be assured that you would never hear your phone going off.

I can’t believe that you would enter the conversation of ‘public image’.

  92. Boubalos Boubalos says:

    My two cents worth.
Arkansas is one player away from having a fairly good team. It is possible that Bryant might step up to be a player, maybe not.
Arkansas lost that game for two reasons, mental mistakes (they were atrocious) and rebounding. Perhaps both are attributed to coaching, but I have tried to coach “dumb” and it does not work very well.
Britt is a good defender but useless on offense.
These are not all Pelphery’s recruits. Washington and Welsh are from before he came. And the best thing to happen to this team is for the 4* Welsh to graduate. Washington will be hard to replace.
If we ger Ratliffe, the team will be far better next year than now. Remember we also get another very good guard, from this year’s redshirt.
And if we were lucky enough to get all three, or four of Arkansas top players in 2011, even I could coach that team to win most of its games for a couple of years.
From what I have seen this year, the biggest problems are lack of talent beyond 4 players and stupid mistakes by even a couple of those.

  93. razorpride89 razorpride89 says:

    Peyton,

I’d go for at least 22 wins and a trip to at the 2nd and maybe 3rd round of the tourney, next year. We are returning 4 starters and are only losing 2 players, only 1 of those are key (Washington).

And Florida is actually pretty decent. Weren’t they in the top 25 earlier this year?

  94. Ben Ben says:

    Razorpride,

This is my first post guys, but I follow this blog almost religously ha. I do believe Florida was ranked as high as 11 earlier this year.

  95. Matt Matt says:

This team gets a hot shooter (R.Clark for example) the others become “awe-struck” and relient on that player. You saw even Washington miss point blank layups. Clark was the only stud on the court and the others played like they would get in trouble if they involved themselves in the offense.
There are way to many examples of good coaches coming into a less than desirable situation and win right away or at least are winning big by year 2 or 3. I was a huge Pel fan, but if he ain’t got it, he ain’t got it.
I WANT NOLAN BACK WITH A PASSION!

  96. PeytonHillisFTW PeytonHillisFTW says:

Right Randy, like “slashing wrists” has no suicidal connotation whatsoever… we all know better than that.

Matt, you are correct that coaches come in and are back to winning within 2 or 3 years. But, how many of those coaches have had 10 (or more) different players over 2 years get suspended for doing somethin stupid, and then leave for being disciplined? Yeah, I know, not all 10 left, but 3 or 4 impact players have..Including Jason Henry, Brandon Moore, Montrell McDonald, and Patrick Beverly.

And the “I want Nolan back” is a broken record. It’s kinda like those gay “I miss Bill” (Clinton) bumper stickers you see on the road. It drives me nuts b/c it ain’t gonna happen!

  98. PeytonHillisFTW PeytonHillisFTW says:

Since when do preseason rankings matter more than a team’s performance?

Also, I would say if you honestly expect even making the Big Dance next year you will be the one preaching “DOOMSDAY” about midway through the year. As has been said, Washington is extremely difficult to replace, and the rest of our good players are undersized as compared to our competition. To expect a tournament experience is asking way too much of the incoming freshmen or transfers.

If we cant go .500 with this team that we have, with Michael Washington here, and yet we go to a tourny with freshman replacements next year? lol very logical.

  99. razorpride89 razorpride89 says:

And you can’t say you’re mad at Pel for disciplining the kids, can you? I mean, wasn’t Nolan all about discipline?

  100. Boubalos Boubalos says:

Well, I certainly have not seen the 40 minutes of hell. I watched the K State-Texas game and the K-Nebraska game; there was real movement from all four teams, but there was far better players than we have as well. I think the problem is in the players, and not Pel. If you remember, it took Nolan more than 2 years to get a team put together that could run and several years to put one together that could both shoot and press. As they say, you dance with the person who brung you. And although Pel’s first recruiting class looked really good on paper or Rivals and Scouts, all we have to show for that is two quite good guards. we have one really good “freshman forward” and one other person that should be playing forward. We do not have a center or anyone to come off the bench and be a threat. Until next year when we have some depth at guard and one or two more forwards, I really do not know what anyone would expect better than what we have.

  101. PeytonHillisFTW PeytonHillisFTW says:

razor, im not mad about the discipline, im upset that Pelphrey is recruiting kids of questionable character. the best basketball coaches like Chekevsky (sp.) (Duke Coach) know how to recruit talented players that are also great kids and even less talented players that have an unmatched passion for winning.

  102. Boubalos Boubalos says:

And how long did it take him to recruit a team at Duke to go to the NCAA? Success brings success. If Pelphrey had the record of success and recruiting, he likely would have passed over all those rejects too. Why were they still left and not recruited by Kentucky, Kansas, Duke, NC, or the Big East? And how does a coach know which players are going to go totally stupid when they get away from home?

  103. razorpride89 razorpride89 says:

    Peyton,

The discipline thing was for Matt, just making a point that Pel knows how to discipline. And there’s no way you can get a good sense of a kids character on the recruiting trail. You can’t predict how they’re going to act, no way.

Also, go check the AP poll on December 14 & 21. Florida was ranked #13 & then # 18–midseason. I guess you don’t keep up with the polls…

Washington may not be that hard to replace, seeing as how Powell is playing superior to him the past few weeks. And how can we not expect to go to the dance with 4 returning starters and the majority of our team returning? Don’t teams improve over the year?

    You don’t make sense!

  104. razorpride89 razorpride89 says:

And the reason the Duke coach gets good academic players is b/c Duke is an academic school. There’s no way the kids will make a passing grade in classes @ Duke, if they’re not at least somewhat smart.

I sure as hell don’t wanna take classes there.

You sir are the one not making sense. I knew that Florida’s preseason ranking was higher, which was my point exactly. The only reason they were ranked “#24 at one time” as you mentioned is because they started out with a high preseason ranking.

YOU: “And there’s no way you can get a good sense of a kids character on the recruiting trail. You can’t predict how they’re going to act, no way.”

Thats got to be about the stupidest thing i’ve heard here. A coach’s job is to do research, and there are multiple avenues of finding out about someone’s character — the primary one being getting information from the people they rub shoulders with day to day, peers and authority figures. If a kid has had discipline problems in the past it is a pretty easy thing to find out.

For some strange reason that does not surprise me.

  107. razorpride89 razorpride89 says:

    Peyton,

Please read this —–> Florida was ranked # 13 & #18 in consecutive weeks in the Associated Press Poll on December 14 & December 21. Those are mid-season dates, which means they were ranked during the season. When did I say they were ranked # 24?

Also, how do you know the kids had prior discipline problems before coming the the UofA? You don’t and I don’t. So, seeing that you don’t, makes my statement seem pretty smart.

  108. PeytonHillisFTW PeytonHillisFTW says:

    not really

you know its the coaches jobs not ours to evaluate character, and so far Pel appears to lack judgement in this department. if it was just one or two situations it would be excusable, but this is a constantly recurring theme under Pel’s tenure.

  111. Matt Matt says:

Fla = above average, but by no means are they good. I will pull for the Hogs to win every game. This is a year (maybe outside of Heath’s 1st year) that I have no confidence that we will win another conf game. Overall every team in the sec has been playing better BB than we have(the past 4 games). We caught Bama at home on a bad night(for them).
Nolan did a descent job on discipline. Didn’t he kick a felon off the team that Eddie took at Okie State. I forgot his name, but Nolan said he wasn’t going to put up with that $#(t on his team.

That is the reason Ga had to fire Felton. The guy kicked every Tom, Dick and Harry of his team. The problem is that he recruited many of the kids he, in turn, kicked off. The Bulldogs never got any traction and thus, outside of the SEC Champ, they were bottom feeders in the east.

  113. Big Boi Big Boi says:

CJP has made all the trouble for him self. His lack of talent evaluation and he`s poor system are the reason he is the most scrutinized person in the state. The games are getting closer but a loss is a loss his conference record is pathetic he needs to be fired!

  114. razorpride89 razorpride89 says:

Bruce Pearl must be a shi**y coach too, right? 4 players, all in the same car, 1 isolated incident. He should have seen it coming! He shouldn’t have brought those players on. If Pearl is such a good coach, why didn’t he see these problems when he brought Tyler Smith & Brian Williams in 3 or 4 years ago? Didn’t he forsee them doing this? Wasn’t he told by “the people they rub shoulders with day to day, peers and authority figures” that they would do this?

    Just made myself laugh.

  115. Quinn Quinn says:

Big Boi you are right, Fortson, Clark and Powell have absolutely no talent…. what a joke! JP has not made players go to a frat party and hook up with the same girl or hit the bong.

Sounds like you want someone like “Lame” Kiffen to coach our basketball team, someone who has no morals or ethical behavior and that will do whatever it takes to win.

I am personally proud of Pelphrey for sticking his neck out there and putting his job on the line to make sure things are done right. That is how you build a program, not by cutting corners. Some idiots were also calling for Nolan’s head after his first couple of years and look where we would be if that had happened.

  116. mudhog mudhog says:

I’m fed up with eveyone trying to compare Pelprey’s 1st couple of years to Nolan’s 1st couple of years! Let’s just face it, Pelphrey had it made his first year here whether you wanna believe it or not! Pelphrey didn’t get left with a mess! He got left with a pretty good team. As far as dicipline goes, when Nolan diciplined a player it worked, meaning he knew what buttons to push to get a player to play to their potetntial. It’s more to diciplining a player than just suspending them, to me JP doesn’t really scare you when he yells at a player. I remember watching Nolan through several games and all he had to do was look at a player and I could feel the intensity!

The team Pelphrey was left with was a senior laden team which meant pelphrey had a year, that’s right a YEAR, to recruit the kind of players he wanted to play for him! The expectations for the 2nd year was pretty clear in that everyone knew it would be a rebuilding year!

To everyone’s surprise the players that JP recruited his 1st season(2008)didn’t actually pan out. So okay, we can scratch that year, no problem. Our next recruting class(2009)we get a pretty good class on paper but when we started playing games this year it became evident that only 1 player can actually help us out. Jemal Farmer was suppose to be the headlining player along with Marshawn Powell. So I guess we’ll scatch last years class as well! How about another do-over JP?

I don’t care what anyone says, this year has to be Pelphrey’s last year! Out of our past 14 signees, 11 of them have been busts! We don’t need much more evidence than that to see that Pelphrey can’t recruit. Some say we have a pretty good class coming in next year but I think we’ve heard those words before.

  117. razorpride89 razorpride89 says:

    *yawn*

    It’s becoming repetitive.

  118. Chog Chog says:

Some of you will continue to be clueless just like the guy that responded to my post.

First, Stan did have a few problems with the team, but NOTHING like Pel is having. He also was above 500 3 years in to the gig. This excuse making is mind numbing.

Also, how ridiculous do you have to be to say that Pel brought in 2 top 20 classes and the kids were just bad kids. That is on the coach, are you kidding me?

If being 3-17 in 20 SEC games doesn’t slap reality in some of ya’lls faces nothing will. We are awful right now and all of these recruits that signed and left were Pelphrey’s recruits.

He is responsible for bringing in kids that have bad character and don’t go to class.

But yet some of ya’ll don’t want to blame that on Pelphrey? Are some of you just flat out clueless?

Heath actually got better with the Razorbacks. He also took us to back to back tourney appearances unlike Pelphrey he is going to give us BACK TO BACK losing seasons.

  119. Chog Chog says:

I just do not get some of you people AT ALL. Some guy in this blog literally said Pel can not be at fault or blame for his own recruits being bad, or sour apples?

You have to be an incompetent fool to recruit that many poor character guys in back to back classes.

How many other coaches screw up that bad and get a free pass? Not many, because you don’t hear about that many players leaving a program in 2 years like you have at Arkansas over the last 2.

The excuse making is beyong reasonable, IMO. There is nothing Pelphrey has done to improve this program.

We are at an all time low, yet people want to make EXCUSES that are completely FALSE and make no sense whatsoever.

Pephrey came in here had a senior team that Heath recruited and went to the NCAA’s. He had a FULL YEAR to recruit his guys and did, and then half of them left, just like the year before.

We are about to suffer back to back losing seasons, and back to back SEC losing seasons after finishing dead last with only 2 confernce wins.

Also, Mike Anderson lost a ton from his team last year, BASICALLY all of his leaders and look at Missour right now. They are top 15 in the country and lost most of their scoring from last year.

The excuse making about Heath is just stupid. Heath has been gone, and Heath actually Knows how to recruit. He just couldn’t win big enough, and couldn’t get Butts in the seats.

That’s why Stan was fired if some of you didn’t know. It wasn’t because there were “problems” like the guy that responded to me said. The attendance was down, and people were not happy with the product on the court. Yet, he went to back to back NCAA tournament games.

Now, you have people defending a guy that can’t even get over 500 with his own recruits because he can’t bring in guys that are capable of being STUDENT ATHLETES.

Who the hell do you blame this on, the kids? If you do, then you are clueless. These kids are recruits and given free rides to school. They get to go to school FOR FREE and play Ball.

A coach should know who they are going after and they should know if the kid would be good for the program. Well, Pel whiffed horribly and that’s why we are below 500 again.

Yet, people want to continue to make FALSE EXCUSES, that have no MERIT AT ALL.

Some people really believe he walked into a mess when NO FACTS SUPPORT THAT AT ALL.

This is also Pel’s 8th season as a HEAD coach in D1 basketall. In 8 seasons he only has 3 winning seasons. None of those winning seasons were with players he recruited out of high school either. The 3 winning seasons Pel has had are with other coaches players.

So, if we continue on this pattern, Pel will have another over all losing record and that would be 5 losing seasons in 8 tries.

But yet some of you just keep making up stuff to fit your agenda. I guarantee it’s getting very tired with some people.

  120. razorpride89 razorpride89 says:

    Chog,

I’ve given a number of facts and numbers supporting my arguement. I don’t see any in yours, that’s the real problem.

  121. razorpride89 razorpride89 says:

And Missouri isn’t anywhere near the top 15 according to the polls. Good research, Chog.

  122. Big Boi Big Boi says:

Quinn. We don`t pay CJP to get 3 average players (nobody on this team is first team all SEC) out of 16. I guess you like his style of play as will. I love the Hawgs I`m just not blinded by it.(Quinn,razorpride89)

  123. razorpride89 razorpride89 says:

And how is it not the kids faults for getting in trouble? Was CJP telling them to go get in trouble? You are an idiot. I don’t care what anybody else says, but you are one complete and utter idiot!

    Sorry Richard.

  124. Big Boi Big Boi says:

    *well* not will.lol

  125. razorpride89 razorpride89 says:

    Big Boi,

Isn’t there only 5 first team SEC players? Out of 12 teams, having 1 on that teams is a long shot.

  126. Blake Blake says:

Powell will certainly be a first team All-SEC Freshman.

I also would not be surprised to see Fortson or Clarke make an All SEC team this year.

It is the lack of quality shooters that is a problem. Wade, Scott, and Waithe are all good shooters and scorers. Welsh and Big Mike will be gone, and so the complexion of this team will change greatly. When the 2011 class comes in the Hogs will be sitting pretty and ready to be back at the top.

Unfortunately we will have to go through the pain of watching this team struggle this year, but they are competing and playing hard. I have not seen quit in this team or the staff.

They will put up a better SEC record than last season (not saying much I know).

I think if you are unable to bear the Hogs struggles then just focus on football. Before you know it the Hogs will be back. Pelphrey took a job nobody else wanted folks. That is a certified fact.

I cant stand watching Kentucky and other SEC teams we just to be bitter rivals with in basketball excel while we fail, but unfortunately for all of them the Hogs ARE coming back.

Next year although we are young I think we will make it to the NCAA tourney, especially if we can land Ratliffe to ice the cake on this current class. 2011-2012 season we will be running people out of gyms again. Believe that.

  127. Chog Chog says:

Are you kidding me, Razorpride89? My post is full of facts. Are you that blind, sir?

Am I in the twilight zone?

I have researched this over 20 times. I am one of the biggest hog fans around. I know my facts, sir. You are the one who needs to wake up and check your own.

We are 3-17 in 20 SEC games dating back to last year.

Nothing I said was false. If it is come back and refute them, because you can’t.

I get my facts not only from doing my own research, but talking to actual COACHES.

Unbelievable how you could say what you said, Razorpride89. You can’t fix somebody that is willing to stay blind to ABSOLUTE FACTS.

  128. Chog Chog says:

Razorpride89, you must not know at all how the college game works. Or, what coaches are there to do.

Pelphrey is responsible for bringing these kids in. It’s ALL in his shoulders. You can’t blame Pelphrey for what they do in their spare time, but Pelphrey is the man GIVING THEM A FREE RIDE TO SCHOOL.

We have more problems THAN EVER WITH HIS OWN PLAYERS. He had a full year to recruit this current sophomore class.

Our depth was depleted becasue Pelphrey didn’t do a good enough of job of bringing in kids that watned to be STUDENT ATHLETES AND NOT JUST BASKETBALL PLAYERS.

Man, some of you are amazing.

Every coach in America is responsible for HIS KIDS. That is the job of the head coach. If they don’t do a good job they are FIRED 99% of the time.

“WOW” is all I have to say to you.

  129. Blake Blake says:

    Chog,

We could be like other programs and just cheat and let our kids who just want to be basketball players be just that. But apparently we follow rules.

I am of the opinion that many of the best teams do not. My sister went to UNC and Jameson was a regular at their parties and the things he talked about would indicate he did nothing but play basketball. Calipari at Memphis and now at Kentucky I can assure is sticking to his MO.

  130. Chog Chog says:

Blake, you are confused if you don’t think a lot of schools do things they shouldn’t, including Arkansas.

I have had at least 4 buddies play Basketball or Football at the University of Arkansas. It goes on every where, buddy.

That’s also another very lame excuse. We don’t have to cheat to be an above 500 basketball program.

Right now we are a below 500 basketball program in year 3 of coach Pelphrey.

I know everything about Pelphrey’s career. I wasn’t upset with the hire at first either.

However, it has been a sinking ship ever since Heath’s players left.

  131. razorpride89 razorpride89 says:

Which coaches have you spoken with Chog? Cuz I spoke with CJP himself and he said you were an idiot, which agrees with me.

Oh and I don’t care what our record is in SEC play since last year.

Arkansas beat Texas & Oklahoma last year, does that matter anymore? No!

  132. poch punt poch punt says:

I for one think this team will improve. If your willing to man up next year at this time I will go out and shoot some crows for you to eat.

  133. dwp007 dwp007 says:

PEL will put the program back together, again. Jeff Long knows a good thing when he sees it, and the discipline presently being implemented will have huge dividends in the not too distant future.

As a fan, I want the Razorbacks to be kicking butt in every game and sport. This year, however, in basketball, is going to be difficult and patience is the key.

If we’re having the same discussion this time next year, some of the complaints may be more justified. My money [figuratively and literally] is on PEL as well as numbers 15, 33, etc., to go with a very good incoming class.

  134. Chog Chog says:

Jeff Long including another administrator had to step in and take more control when the suspensions started mounting. Jeff Long knows exactly what the hell is going on up there and it’s all up to him.

We go to 3 straight NCAA tournaments and we don’t capitalize on it at all. We fired a coach for actually winning enough to go to the NCAA’s, but now we want to make excuses for a coach that can’t even get his PLAYERS THAT HE RECRUITED above 500.

Pelphrey took over a situation where we had gone to Back to Back NCAA tournaments. Pel then took Heath’s team full of seniors back to the NCAA’s and lost in the 2nd round. That was a huge step for us, but we didn’t capitalize on it AT ALL.

The excuses by some of you people are pathetic.

  135. Chog Chog says:

I also really question the basic knowledge of college athletics when it comes to you.

One guy in this blog says it isn’t Pel’s fault for the players getting introuble? Are you kidding me? Unfreakingbelievable. I guess Pel can tell kids, sure come here if you get introuble it isn’t on me!

Then we hear the tired crap of us being down, and that’s why we fired Heath. Really? So going to 2 NCAA tournaments is bad when our program hadn’t been in like 5 years previous? Then, we fire Heath after his 2nd NCAA appearance in a row. We then hire Pelphrey to come in and do better. Well, he took that same team back to the NCAA’s and won our 1st round game.

That was great for the program. We had gone to 3 NCAA tournaments in 3 years and Pel had all the fire Power in the world to go out and recruit kids and tell them we’re on our way back.

Instead, we hit the tank and we are now 3-17 with Pel’s recruits. After going to 3 NCAA tournaments in a row.

A competent coach would’ve used that and done something good with it. It doesn’t take a freaking Rocket Scientist to figure this out.

  136. GonzoHog GonzoHog says:

I’m still 50-50 on Pelphrey. I don’t believe him to be an elite coach, but I do believe he’s a good one.
Recruiting-wise, I believe we’re in pretty good shape, and as far as the character issues we had with some of the recruits last season, (M. McDonald and J. Henry) I believe we’re past that now.
    B. Moore and A. Clarke were simply not developing, so there scholorships weren’t renewed.
Coach Petrino did the same thing with B. Forester (punter) this year.
The 3 recruits we have commited so far look pretty good.(R. Scott, M. Wade and M. Waithe) The addition of R. Ratliffe (the #1 Juco recruit in the nation) would be HUGE! He’s currently high on the Hogs and seems to be leaning in our direction.
He played with M. Powell in high school and stated a couple of months ago it would be great to team up with Marshawn again.
We have a good shot at landing in-state recruits Ross, Madden and Mickelson for the 2011 class. This is why A.D. Long is giving Pelphrey 2 more years.
He knows full well this is not the time for a restructuring of the program. It need’s support and stability more than anything.
If those future in-state recruits don’t see that, they could choose someone else.
Believe it or not, right now, it’s not about wins and losses. It’s about continuing the restructuring we’ve already started, not tearing it back down.

  137. dwp007 dwp007 says:

Nice post, Gonz. Agree. I’m outta here, folks. Go Hogs!

  138. DVD DVD says:

Good job Gonzo. Restruction means to start over, and in the SEC that means at the bottom. And thats a long way to climb.

  139. PeytonHillisFTW PeytonHillisFTW says:

We are in this for the long haul guys!!!!!! Hurrah! It might take Pelphrey 50 years to get his kids disciplined and ready to play, BUT HE WILL GET IT DONE! Huzzahh!

“Anything worth building is worth building right”, “Rome wasnt built in a day”, so we need to give Pelphrey TIME to learn on the job and a couple decades at least so he can fully began to become a good judge of character. Hurrah!

Pelphrey needs 50 years to get his system in place before we should expect to go .500 in conference. If we as fans don’t agree with this, than we must not really be fans at all! Huzzah!! REmember that wins/ losses don’t matter! ITs all about rebuilding! Woohooo! True fans understand that.

  140. Blake Blake says:

nah guys no need to be sarcastic. Pel has two years. this current class and then the loaded in state class. if at that point we are not back (And we will be) Pel will be let go. and we will be loaded with talent and someone will want the job. right now nobody would. would you?

  141. GonzoHog GonzoHog says:

I agree. No need for the sarcasm.
Phelphrey may very well be let go after 2 more seasons, but that’s a very big “if”, considering the talent we could have on this team by then.
I’m not saying we’ll actually land all of those players, but if we do, we’ll have the talent necessary to compete really well.

As far as Coach Pelphrey himself goes, as a young, inexperienced coach on this level of college basketball, he’s still learning too.
He doesn’t have the experience of a lot of coaches out there, but if we don’t give him the time necessary to rebuild what Frank and Nolan tore down, it’ll only get worse. I promsie you that.
If CJP we’re to be let go after this season, you wouldn’t be able to get your foot in the door with any quality, name coaches out there.
Stan Heath recieved 5 seasons. Why shouldn’t CJP recieve at least 4?
I don’t understand why some fans seem to believe that their sports programs are so sacred they can just flip-flop head coaches around every 2 or 3 years and the rebuilding issue is somehow fixed.
Isn’t that kind of like going out and buying another used vehicle for the same price you paid on the last one 2 years ago? You didn’t allow yourself enough time to pay off the old one and save up for a down payment on a brand new one, so guess what? your still driving a vehicle you don’t like.

  142. DVD DVD says:

When you buy a used car there is something you should think about.

Aren’t you really buying someone elses problems ?

  143. GonzoHog GonzoHog says:

I believe South Alabama was pretty happy with the used Mustang they were driving, considering their standards and expectations.
Here at the UofA, some expect to be driving a brand new Corvett every 2 or 3 years.

Nolan was right. When you create a monster, someone has to feed it.
Unfortunately, the monster is so out of control now, knowone can get close enough to feed it without being eaten alive.

Gonzo, you are on the right track. The “program” has been seriously damaged. Frank and Nolan crossed swords, sending all kinds of messages to other coaches and prospective recruits. Then you have five years of SH. He was unable to repair it. Next comes JP and we have a grades problem, where we risk losing schollies. And we still aren’t nearly out of the woods. The stability issue that was mentioned exists in capitol letters. We need to give JP this season plus another two to try to implement a PROGRAM, not just recruits a bunch of kids to put on the floor.

I respect Long and JP for addressing their discipline issues. With the smaller squads imposed by the NCAA, if you have to set one of you main players down for a couple of games or whatever, you will probably lose those games. It takes guts to do that, when you look at your family and the style of living that you have to furnish them.

Good stuff, Gonzo. It will NOT happen TODAY.. or this year.. for that matter, but PEL will restore the program. With next year’s recruits – and thereafter – the Razorbacks will be back in business.
