Deonte Welch and Julian Horton have orally committed to Arkansas.

* 1:44 Daunte Carr has orally committed to the Hogs.

Jatashun ‘Big Tex’ Beachum is solid. He had a great visit and he said he’s signing with the Hogs on Feb. 3.

Jordan Rainey is all on board with Arkansas. The new OL coach really impressed him.

Byran Jones did not commitment to Auburn after taking an official visit there this weekend.  He’s suppose to visit Fayetteville next weekend.

will they take the commits….that is the question

  2. cdavidson Richard Davenport says:

    Yes. They took their commitments.

  3. Dalton Dalton says:

Thanks Richard, how many spots do we have left?

  4. Phil Phil says:

    Did we take Byrd’s commitment?

  5. Dalton Dalton says:

Also, what position is Welch projected to play?

    Did we take Byrd’s commitment?

Last I heard they did not. I haven’t heard anything to make me think otherwise.

  7. Dalton Dalton says:

Richard, what position is Welch projected to play?

  8. heath heath says:

I think Horton is a good get but Welch is very questionable could we not get better?

  9. GonzoHog GonzoHog says:

I think Welsh was a CB recruit.

  10. cdavidson Richard Davenport says:

Welch and Horton are being recruited as receivers.

  11. cdavidson Richard Davenport says:

Welch is one of those great athletes that could play CB, S or WR. He’s going to start out at WR.

He’s listed as 5-11 but he’s 6-0. That’s what he said he is and I stood next to him and he looks the 6-0.

  12. Phil Phil says:

What about Humphrey now? Would we take his commitment (if he tried)?

  13. Dalton Dalton says:

    Thanks Richard!

Like Phil said, are we done with Humphrey?

  14. Big Boi Big Boi says:

WOW, We are really adding depth at WR. Wade will be a stud Bennett has to much talent not to play WR Horton looked good on film. Hope yhr DT from FL commits really need him

  15. El Dorado Flash El Dorado Flash says:

We had better leave room on recruit numbers for 3 more on Defensive line. I don’t see how you can refer to Welch as a great athelete are any other top level football programs breaking down thre doors to get him?

  16. DIEHARDHOG DIEHARDHOG says:

I just realized that Elton Ford was a 5.2 2-Star and Matt Hall was a 4-Start.

Elton changes the defense and Hall is transferring due to lack of PT.

    Interesting

  17. El Dorado Flash El Dorado Flash says:

Can you tell us update on status about DTs Calvin Smith, Bryan Jones, Sean Wstson, etc.

  18. JT JT says:

What in the world is this staff doing? Recruiting is a trainwreck right now.

  19. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

I just noticed Ryan Mallett was a 5 star and now is getting touted as the 1st pick in next year’s draft and as a legitimate Heisman candidate. Interesting…

  20. TX Hog Fan TX Hog Fan says:

This is totally messed up! What are they thinking? I know I’m not the coach but it keeps getting more and more disappointing. Why did they give a scholorship to Welch? He was unranked and didn’t have an offer from anyone…anyone! Another offensive project is something we do not need.

    Absolutely horrific….

  21. hog53 hog53 says:

Richard – what did carr think of his visit? I sorta expected a commit from him

  22. AusTx Hog AusTx Hog says:

I need to correct my fellow Hog from Texas who earlier stated that we have never beaten Georgia. We are 3-9 against the Dawgs. Won our first trip to Athens as an SEC team under Danny Ford. Ford went 1-1 against UGA. Nutt went 0-5. Petrino is 0-1.

I still blame that loss on that ridiculous early bye week on our schedule … that and Franklin’s ejection. Dogs had played at Okie State and home against the Gamecocks and we had just played Mo State.

  23. HonestAbeHog HonestAbeHog says:

We should all trust our coaches’ judgment on which recruits we need.

Our coaches have shown the past two years that they are trustworthy, and good at what they do. Notice the football product that they put on the field last year.

  24. JT JT says:

Taking Welch is a waste of a schollie we need to use on DT, DE, LB, S.

    SO frustrating.

  25. TX Hog Fan TX Hog Fan says:

Thanks for the research. I was just going on recent or meaningful history. But you can blame that loss on the bye week all you want. I blame it on HORRIBLE defensive coaching by slick Willy.

Folks, we are in big trouble with this class. I’m sorry Richard, I have much respect for you in regards to your profession, but this class has some bad choices. There are a few nice players. But it’s mostly an embarassment for a SEC team that expects to compete for a division or conference title.

Were ranked 49th on Scout.com and 55th on Rivals. Rivals doesn’t have the 2 guys on there that just committed. But Welch isn’t even ranked. I think the staff has come to the realization that we’ve got to get anyone who will say yes now.

My contact here in the DFW area just told me that Beachum isn’t going to sign with us. Looks like another one were gonna lose to Oklahoma. Pathetic….

  26. Brother Zombie Brother Zombie says:

All you experts crack me up. These coaches make their living doing this. They have years of experience with evaluating the few snippets of video, talking with coaches, analyzing these kids in person to find talented players. You experts, sit in your family den, watch a little you tube, read what others think, and decry the actions of our coaches – who unlike you will get fired if they are wrong. You base that on a kid not having enough STARS next to his name, or the fact some website has the kid as “not evaluated”, regardless of the fact the recruiting websites get it wrong (a 2* turns into a good college player and the 5* never pans out) just as much as they get it right. They rate these kids on reputation. There are thousands of HS players, and guess what, they can’t fully and objectively evaluate them all. Since the coaches careers are on the line, and they have proven records (unlike you guys), I will trust they see something in these kids that will translate to success in this program.

Just because a kid does not have an offer from “anyone” does not mean they don’t have the same tools as a highly regarded prospect. You guys can write-off the program and coaches because we don’t have enough “stars” but I am going to give the guys whose livelihood depends on it the benefit of the doubt.

  27. Dalton Dalton says:

RD just said Beachum was absolutely solid.

  28. tahoehog tahoehog says:

Trainwreck? How so JT? Might not be the most highly rated class Petrino will ever have but there are some real standouts in the group and not only on the O… Smith and Gaston for example have the potential to be an intimidating pair of linebackers down the road. What I also see falling into place is accomplished and talented coaches at every level who will develop every ounce of talents in the recruits we get… just waiting for a new kick ass DC with fire in his belly to be named… and the foundation for a run at the National Championship will be in place.

Just mho… and damn sure worth what you paid for it!

  29. Big Boi Big Boi says:

Richard, How did the DT from FL look? Was he the 6`3 arounf 300 as listed? Same question for Gatson? Do you see him as a LB or growing into a DE?

  30. AugustaHog AugustaHog says:

I hope to hell he proves you guys wrong over the next 4 years. CBP and staff have a good idea of what’s going on. I have no idea what kind of talent this kid has or what he will do on the next level, but maybe CBP sees something in him that others don’t. Pretty sure alot of the kids that Boise St. recruits aren’t raking in big time offers either and they seem to do pretty well against higher rated guys. We may look back at this class and shake our heads in a few years, but until I see these guys play a snap, I’m not going to poor mouth them. If we don’t bring in at least 2 more D linemen though I will have some questions myself. Maybe we’ll figure out that those 3 “silent commits” are from the dline.

  31. Dalton Dalton says:

Gaston didn’t make the trip, he’s coming in next weekend with Bennett and Barnett, I’m assuming to add a little more Oklahoma flavor, to try and get Barnett to be a Hog.

  32. Captain Reality Captain Reality says:

Why can’t these coaches see in person what posters can see from thei keyboards? Petrino’s kids are not being held hostage by Welch’s army until he is offered. Neither Petrino as Paul is recruiting Welch for Illini. If he had no talent the coaches are the ones who’s livlihood depends on winning. I’m sure negative comments can get back to recruits. Get more Rivals subscribers and your school gets better rankings. UGA,Bama, UF, ND, UTexas mentions a kid and his rankings jump. Trust the professionals who’s job and reputation are on the line and “Dance with who brung ya.”

  33. Tallahassee Hog Tallahassee Hog says:

I like how some people still continue to bash CBP recruits before they even suit up in an Arkansas uniform. There is an estimated million plus high school football players in the US, how do you expect the recruiting gurus to evaluate every single one of those player. There is not one coach that would offer a scholarship unless they believed that player would make their team better. Too many people are not looking at the big picture in the recruiting world. Each time we offer a player a scholarship we are building a relationship with that high-school and that high-school coach’s coaching circle. Enough of the recruit bashing and let’s give CBP the benefit of doubt and let’s see what happens in the big picture.

  34. AusTx Hog AusTx Hog says:

No doubt about it we need help on defense. BP has moved Colton Nash to DE. Does anyone know if we redshirted anyone else of relevance on defense? I know we’re going to be stacked on the OL with all the redshirt talent coming in … probably why Matt Hall left.

  35. AusTx Hog AusTx Hog says:

Ryan Calendar is also supposed to make a huge impact on the DL. 6-7 kid from Caddo Mills that can lay a hit.

  36. David Baker David Baker says:

Guys there isn’t a whole lot of difference from a 3 star recruit and a 5 star recruit. It all depends on the young men and their work ethic and desire. Coach Petrino is doing just fine, next year will be better recruiting. Ranking recruits is all opinion anyway. There are plenty of 2 and 3 star recruits playing on Sundays now. Let’s it takes several years to determine if a recruiting class is a success or not.

  37. Snake Snake says:

Found an interesting article on Deonte Welch. It describes him as a Jeremy Maclin or Percy Harvin type. Its an interesting read.

    http://recruiting.blogs.gatorsports.com/10160/checkin-out-deonte-welch/

  38. TX Hog Fan TX Hog Fan says:

We don’t have several years to see if a science experiment with players that aren’t ranked and have offers from UAB and So. Miss to pan out. The SEC moves too fast and is too difficult.

  39. AusTx Hog AusTx Hog says:

I agree with those who wonder about Welch. Looks undersized.

  40. Mr. T Mr. T says:

It says on ESPN U from 2006 that Malcolm Shepperd ranked out at 40! I agree with David Baker that it depends on the coaching staff and the character of the young men as well as talent. You never know. Trust Petrino.

  41. Razorback56 Razorback56 says:

some of the comments on this board are hilarious.

clearly we need a few of you to take over for CBP and coach horton

  42. DalTXHogFan DalTXHogFan says:

There is so much acrimony over one or two guys and whether they can play D-line or not that I think some things get missed. Would you take the best player that “you” as a coach thing is available or take soneone else’s opinion for a player that “you” deem a project? I am not sure if there is anyone here that remembers taht D-Mac was actually recruited to be a safety but then Smith got hurt and he played too well for them to move him to that side of the ball. This recruiting looks like the old Florida State recruiting model. You take a big corner and make him a safety. A big safety becomes an outside linebacker the big LB’s are DE’s and the DE’s become DT’s. That is the same model used by TCU and other schools today. TCU’s All American DE was a high school running back. Gentlemen think Jamaal Anderson.

  43. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

That’s what folks fall back on, when they can’t use anything to disagree with you.

“we should fire the coaches and hire you”
“we might as well not play this season”

prove us wrong. Show us where we are wrong. Trust me. We want to be.

  44. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

All I know is that SEC teams that rank low in recruiting are the worst teams in the conference.

  45. shanep shanep says:

  46. parkhog91 parkhog91 says:

good article linked on hawgs illustrated by Florida writer that talks very positively about what a great athlete with speed Welch is. Someone here know how to bring the link. I think two great DT’s to close will calm most people down

  48. Big Daddy Hog Big Daddy Hog says:

I see a lot of people questioning Welch’s ability and the fact he was not offered by anyone else. He was offered by N.C. State, Vanderbilt, Tulane, South Florida and Fla. International. You should read the attached, you may change your mind about this kid.

    http://recruiting.blogs.gatorsports.com/10160/check-out-deonte-welch/

  49. Razorback56 Razorback56 says:

again, we got two players committing today that can end up at WR, S, corner. either one.

    they liked something about them.

we were always going to take another wide receiver and we are going to have a mass exodus of corner backs after next year.

i dont see a problem in either of these commitments.

  50. Razorback56 Razorback56 says:

also, it takes a lot of receivers to run our offense.

  51. johnyr46 johnyr46 says:

Hopefully all these recruits you’re criticizing will prove it to you. Let’s turn it around Mr p. You prove to us they’re bad pik ups. Whoops there’s no way to prove it eitherway til they get on the field or don’t get on the field.

  52. BP BP says:

5 Stars – Mitch Mustain and Gary Brasheres Jr. = total wastes

    East Carolina entire D-Line – 2 stars

    CBP is above reproach

  53. AusTx Hog AusTx Hog says:

    Brett Favre = Satan

  54. AusTx Hog AusTx Hog says:

Thanks for that link, Big Daddy. It does make me feel better about the kid. We can use as many speedy playmakers we can get.

  55. Scott in Hot Springs Scott in Hot Springs says:

Well it’s not this class that’s going to win the SEC this year anyway!!! Can we enjoy what this season’s has to hold… I’m hoping we red-shirt most of this class anyway!

  56. JT JT says:

This will be the worst ranked class in Arkansas history. Even dumb arse Nutt never had a class ranked this poorly.

Having a good attitude is never a bad thing, but it doesnt change the facts in the end. I am a Realist, not an idealist.

  57. AusTx Hog AusTx Hog says:

Yep. We started more freshmen than any other team in the SEC for the second year in a row. The 2011 class is the critical one and we are looking really strong there already.

  58. TX Hog Fan TX Hog Fan says:

Darren was never gonna be anything but a RB. Period. Danny Nutt watched that kid since he was in the 9th grade. Welch was NOT offered by anyone but us. He had interest and his own choices, but no offers. My brother in law is a NC St grad and he looked it up for me.

Also, I understand that we are all fans. Some of us have a higher standard of our program other than just waving the flag and putting on a shirt. We all support them though. It’s not right for people to attack us personally because we are informed, do research, and point out facts.

No one said the sky was falling. But, again, if people here think that being at the bottom of the conference in recruiting every other year and 35th and below nationally is gonna get players to win a division or conference title, you kidding yourselves.

BP and his staff better realize that… I’m sure that they do. But, this isn’t Louisville or the Big East….

  59. hoghog hoghog says:

You mean you are a Rivalist. You have no factual proof that this class won’t end up top ten after rerankings, because it could. What has CP done to question rather he should offer a scholarship or not? Rankings are not facts. Its fun to follow but I wouldn’t bet on their overall accuracy. Just seems unreal that before they have played to question there abilities in Petrino offered.

  60. Jay Jay says:

The additional WR’s are interesting considering everyone we have coming back and off of redshirt. And, considering the few scholarships we have left to offer.

Here’s hoping we really impress Bryan Jones! And, hopefully Big Tex understands he’ll be a DL!!

  62. AusTx Hog AusTx Hog says:

Informed = not stating that Arkansas has never beaten Georgia … that Big Texas is out when RD says he is solid commit … and someone cite me the source that this is the worst ranked class in Arkansas history?

  63. AusTx Hog AusTx Hog says:

Cowboys are toast. Dang that Favre!

  64. JT JT says:

Well, worst ranked since Rivals has been in business ranking classes. Go look on the rivals site and look at each years rankings until you find us worse than 55th.

  65. AusTx Hog AusTx Hog says:

And we can’t blame it on Jessica Simpson anymore!

  66. JT JT says:

well we are 53rd now with Horton, but when Welch is added we will drop again.

  67. AusTx Hog AusTx Hog says:

I’m not thrilled with this class either, but I also think we don’t have enough scholies to rank very high … and if we end up at 55 I’ll concede that I am uninformed. :)

  68. JT JT says:

    2002: 26th
    2003: 29th
    2004: 22nd
    2005: 24th
    2006: 26th
    2007: 31st
    2008: 36th
    2009: 16th
    2010: 53rd and falling

Yeah, we shouldnt be concerned. This class is perfectly fine and in line with the rest of our recruiting classes.

  69. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

I wonder what this class would be ranked had we signed the SEC level talent from Arkansas.

  70. JT JT says:

Mr Perfect, with the exception of Dyer, the class would be no better. Dyer and Jones are the onloy two rated higher than who we have. Well, Sloan too but no significant SEC even offered him. It would make no difference.

  71. MikeATL MikeATL says:

Ark will have finish around 50 or so in recruiting, but will be preseason top 25. The poll I saw had Alabama, LSU, Georgia, and Arkansas in the preseason top 25.

  72. Razorback56 Razorback56 says:

this is not a heavy skill player class. and our schollies are limited.

hence, our ranking is going to be weighted low.

  73. JT JT says:

dont be naive. We have 21 now and will prob have 25. thats not much less than most others. And if you havent noticed we have tons of skilled players. More so than linemen actually.

The players just arent as good as last years.

  75. El Dorado Flash El Dorado Flash says:

Why accept commitmentas from Hortona and Welcjh without waiiting on the 3-4 DTs we are recruting now.
Next year is the year BUT if you don’t get some backup help at DT–all the Horton and Welch type players in the works won’t help for 2010.
We are lsing a HUGE BLOCK of out team after 2010 and will have a good number of juniors jumping to NFL–Mallett, Childs, Adams, etc.

  76. Ron in Germany Ron in Germany says:

  79. Razorback56 Razorback56 says:

  89. Joe (not my real name) Joe (not my real name) says:

MRP, are you glass half empty or half full kind of person. I’m going with half empty based on everything I read from you. Bring good Karma to your life and come with a constructive post. Here is a question for everyone who wants to post negative thoughts without backup. Would you rather have Bobby and staff take a 2-star and work with him or have the the ex-regime work with a 2-star? Who do you think will get more out of the player. 2-stars and even some 3′s are hungry to prove themselves to everyone. These kids are probably not as full of themselves and easier to teach. It is also possible that Bobby and staff saw something no one else saw. Remember they pay attention to detail. So sit back negative ones and let this all play out. If it doesn’t, then tell everyone “I told you so”. Until then “be a part of the solution, not the problem”. Out

I’d rather Petrino recruit a Top 10 class. He’s getting paid Top 10 money. Why do we have to choose between Petrino and a 2 star and Nutt and a 2 star?

Joe, I’m a realist. Last year’s class was amazing and I said it was. I call it like I see it. The solution is recruiting better. Petrino is a good coach, but who do you think is gonna win a game? Petrino and a bunch of 2 stars or Saban with 5 stars?

  95. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

You guys used to complain how our previous staff couldn’t recruit and you based that on stars and recruiting rankings. Now, you’re singing a different song.

  110. RJ RJ says:

good lord people…think logically about this years class…

We have one of the youngest teams in the SEC, and across the country. We do not have early playing time to sell, especially at WR, RB, and QB. We just signed one of the top DB classes in the country last fall. Our 2-deep on defense is littered with freshmen and sophomores.

We’re not a program that can ask 4-star recruits to come in and redshirt and/or not get playing time until their junior year. We need to be able to offer them playing time, like last year. Recruits aren’t stupid, they can look up each teams depth chart with the click of a button.

I think we’ll have a 10+ win season next year and be able to tell recruits we’re an up-and-coming team (win totals increasing from 5 to 8 to 10) and they’ll have an opportunity to come in and be in the 2-deep their freshmen year and then possibly start by their sophomore year. And we’ll be winning, which obviously makes a difference.

Think about it. It’s not the end of the world.

Being quick to judge isn’t one of my characteristics… and like alot have already said 100 times. They get paid to do this… Its their job, not mine. They want to win just as much as we do! We’ll obviously have to wait and see how this class pans out, but it won’t be this year. We won’t really know about this class until 2 or 3 years from now.

However, I think the, “This is a depth-adding class” excuse is funny! Did CBP and staff sit around at a meeting this year and say, “Guys, lets not get alot of really good talent this year. In fact, let’s just get a bunch of guys who are just going to be 2nd and 3rd string players in order to add depth.” That’s funny. CBP wanted highly rated, high character, highly skilled players. He just couldn’t get them this year for whatever reason.

Some on this board act like CBP wants a low-rated class so that he can develope them into pretty good players. He’s going to HAVE to develope them because some (not all) don’t seem to be as good as he would like.

I’m not ready to right this class off yet, but on the front end it looks like we have a lot of work to do.

Its funny but I don’t remember ever worring about recruiting or Stars when HDN was here. What I judeged his recruiting abilities on was the results of his classes. How many Juniors and Seniors we had that were contribuiting to the team and in line to graduate. Those results were very poor because he failed to recruit a complete team, without severe weaknesses. Those weaknesses got us beat even when we had our best teams. CBP is just now going into a season where expectation are for a great season, lets see how that works out. We don’t have enough to judge CBP on the same level so I simply don’t. I do however pay more attention to recruiting now as it has become another season for football while the BB team is in the dumps.

We are filling needs with this class and I personally love it! Beachum at RB are you kidding me? Perfect big back for BP’s system. Good luck to opposing defenders getting a solo tackle on this guy, its gonna take 3 or 4 to bring him down! Also some heavy hitting defensive recruits and even more play-makers! W – P – S !!!!!!

You think BP and co might possibly know something we don’t. You can bet your life on it. Let’s see two silent commits where could they play? I don’t know, maybe……. DL! You don’t see BP sweating do ya? He’s as cool as a cucumber. If there was a problem with this class, he would know. We will end up with EXACTLY what we NEED!

We are on the verge of one of the best seasons we have ever had, maybe the best and I refuse to let these few A**hole armchair recruiters bring me down. (JT, TX hog fan, Mr P.) You must be miserable people to be around. Every minute is a chance to change.

  163. Hawgfan100 Hawgfan100 says:

“And how much different is it from 5.6 to 5.7, which is 3 stars to 4 stars?”

Actually, 5.8 is a 4* ranking but I get your drift. We have, according to Rivals, six recruits at 5.7 and seven at 5.6. I’d have to say with a little coaching those guys could make up a .1 or .2, wouldn’t you? That would then give us 14 out of 20 recruits at 4*. Now that’d be pretty damn good. eh?

“Well Quinn… I DO NOT! Agree with you on Beachum being a RB!… That is Ludacris!”

Actually, ‘Ludacris’ is a rapper, if memory serves, but I get your drift as well (it’s easy especially since your message doesn’t change very much). Just remember the only reason Big Tex went with us was because we said we’d give him a good look at RB.

I see even depth all across the board. If Russ the kicker pans out, he and a few others in this class may solidify our run for the top ten next year. One or two more DT commits and we are doing ok if not great this year.

  168. Josh in FL Josh in FL says:

    hog fan in FL,

    Absolutely.

P.S. I don’t feel like arguing the details of this, but the way that rivals computes team rankings is SILLY. For example, look at the rankings for the ATH position. We’re 17th, right behind Oklahoma State. We have five three stars, one unranked player, and 40 rivals points. Ok. St. has one three star, one four star, and 47 points. Or compare Texas, who with two 5.8 ATHs gets 86 points, with Florida who with two 5.8s gets 67 points.

Add to this the unbelievable ease with which people regularly misjudge high school kids’ abilities, and this seems almost entirely arbitrary.

Once you get past the 5-stars and the 4-stars on the cusp (say, the top 250 or so who have been evaluated to death and been to all the camps), it becomes impossible to put any rational stock in the recruiting services. It seems that they stamp an arbitrary 3-star on any kid offered early by a BCS school, and a 2-star on good kickers and kids offered by non-BCS D1 schools.

  169. TX Hog Fan TX Hog Fan says:

Wow….were up to 52nd in recruiting. What a trainwreck. I don’t care what some you you guys think of my posts or anyone that is critical of this effort(or lack thereof) from our staff. The facts are facts. we are 11th out of 12 SEC teams in recruiting this year. That wont get it done in the SEC. I don’t understand why I and others are the bad guys because we cant stand to be mediocre. I am happy that we getting kids to play for us, and I welcome them to the Razorback family. But the effort could have been better and that’s the truth. I have never questioned BP’s ability. what I have said was that BP WILL LEAVE if he cannot get players in here to win in this league. He wants to win.

We have the right to post the facts and our opinions as long as were not profane and rude to others…which I have not been. To make personal attacks against us is flat out childish and rude.

We have Brown and Jackson at DL but both need to RS–they are only 260 lb range. We need another DD Jones type–ready to go now–such as Bryan Jones–C. Smith, Barnett.

the first fact is true that BP signed Arkansas’s best class ever. The disappointment is that this year he will sign Arkansas’s worst class ever.

The not having enough schollies is BS. We will have 25 commits which isnt far from others. The rankings are on the top 20 or maybe 25 only anyway. We will not be anywhere near the top 25. We added three kids today and recently got Darrell Smith ranked from 0 to 3 stars. Guess what? We are still ranked 52nd. We have a shot to finish in the 40s though. That will look better than 50s. We have NEVER finsihed in the 40s, much less the 50s.

I am going to tell you guys what’s funny, a bunch of “regular Joe’s” questioning the evaluations of a highly respected football coach. Many of the commits that we are getting this late in the game were actually offered quite a while back and are just now making decisions. How many of you guys think that we just got on Byran Jones? How many of you actually know the date that Deonte Welch got an offer from Arkansas? Carr is a very late entry, but looking at who he was committed to, I would say that he is a very good player.
Petrino ain’t all about “Rivals” he is all about the evaluations made by his staff and since his livelyhood depends on the results of the team I’m pretty sure that he is pretty choosey about the players he gets.

  199. AusTx Hog AusTx Hog says:

And let’s remember that the 2008 class was BP with one hand tied behind his back due to the HDN scandal.

  200. TX Hog Fan TX Hog Fan says:

That sorry excuse for a university – USC….they sure do get alot of 5 star recruits. Those recruits hung 70 on us in LA(I was there), and hung 55 on us the next year in our own house. I was there for that ass whipping too. That sorry school also has had 3 heisman winners in 7 years and whole bunch of BCS bowls. That’s what a sorry excuse for a university does with 4 and 5 star recruits. They also have the best Aviation Safety school in the country, which I’m a graduate from.

Character and ability also wins games. It also helps you become a 4 and 5 star recruit. I wish we could get more of them….I’m sure BP is trying…it just happens that we didn’t get it done this year.

  201. mike mike says:

Sounds like some of y’all have gone off your meds. We don’t have to have anybody from this class come in and start to have a great season in 2010-2011. Yes, DL help would make it easier but we are going to be fine.

As to stars, if a kid has the body and heart and explosiveness to make CBP offer him then CBP will find a way to win with him!

    Bank it!!

  202. JT JT says:

ichog, he offered tons of 4 and 5 stars players forever ago. When they didnt come here he had to start taking these kids he is taking now. His evaluations were the same as all the top schools who actually landed most of these kids. It isnt like BP evaluated and decided the 4 and 5 stars arent good and he would rather have these 3 stars with no other SEC offers. HE WANTED THEM BUT DIDNT GET THEM.

That is the worst argument of them all and I hear it all the time. Jesus, as if BP CHOSE these kids over the kids bama, florida, LSU etc have. Just naive and dilusional if you truely think this.

    ALL:

We are all HUGE Razorback fans otherwise, we wouldn’t be on here. That said, we need to be more realistic in our expectations — at least for the near term.

I observed during last year’s “final stretch” that our coaches had 4 criterion which they used to judge who to offer:

    1. TALENT. This is always #1. BP & Co seem to be going after recruits with BOTH Size and Speed — the Athlete.

    2. CHARACTER. What kind of values does this person have? This shows via their Work Ethic, their desire to be the best player they can be, and the ability to put Team first,

    3. NEED. What does the team need, not only this year, but in the 4-5 years that the recruit will be on campus. For instance, if we are going to be losing a couple of really good DBs in the next two years, he might place an emphasis on them.

    4. SIGNABILITY. How likely is it that we can actually get the recruit to sign with us. Yes, we need to stretch to sign the highly regarded players, but if there is absolutely Zero chance that they would sign with Ark, it would be a total waste of time for both the coaching staff and the recruit.

    Sorry for my little rant.

See Im not just out here to say all is bad. I truely just state it as I see it. Last year I was dancing for a week over such an awesome class. Petrino doesnt take 2 star players (other than kickers and the 1st year he was here when he was short handed). I love that about him.

But this class still isnt what last years was and thats been my pt the whole time. We need to have 4-6 4 * players per year minimum.

I am glad we can agree though!!!! Hopefully, we can also agree tat we both LOVE the HOGS!!! Thats two things!

Youngblood on the other hand will never see the field. If you are on this worst ranked D in the league and still havent played yet then you are a bust. Most, not all, of our D starters would not start on many other (if any other) SEC defenses. What does taht say about our reserve D players that arent redshirting as freshmen this year?

Battle was kicked off the team.

Wilson hasn’t done anything to give me any assurance that he can lead this team if Mallett goes down. Crap, he still fumbles snaps from Center.

  223. AusTx Hog AusTx Hog says:

Don’t you think Tyler can be evaluated in more tangible ways? … more than hopes and dreams? … we have seen him lead the offense down the field and set records in the opening game v. Mo State.

I doubt any SEC school’s players have more faith that their backup QB can lead them down the field and score than ours. That BELIEF is important … has a value more than TBD.

  232. AusTx Hog AusTx Hog says:

I am just saying that I agree with you and JT that Tyler Wilson’s “contribution” to the team is TBD. But I think that our decision to give him a scholarship can already be declared a “good decision.”

He gives our team confidence if and, god forbid, when … Ryan goes down.

I’m not one of those who before the season were saying there was a QB controversy … he is not Ryan Mallett … but I don’t think you would see the two and a half quarters of deer in the headlights that struck Texas when Colt went down if Tyler was thrown in the game. That’s all I’m saying.

And over the past 10 years, let’s all admit that our backup QB (other than Matt Jones … who was on again and off again as our starter) … has been an adventure. I feel better about these backups than those over the past 10 years … and that’s worth something.

Trashing this years recruits, and some of the current players is hardly a way to win! If you think Nutt left because of his wins/losses then you definetly have your head stuck to far up the recruiting pages! Fla and Ala have about the same number of players as the Hogs, do they all start, or have they managed to get a handful that are elite like say Mallet? Truth is, we were all Fla wanted and Ala had an outstanding defense while ours was pitiful at times! Next year may very well be totally different. And yes 3 stars do overachive and 5 stars do underachive! Look at USC for example, no one has better recruiting than them and this year what happened? If you get a good team with 2 or 3 absolute studs your BCS material, without the studs your average. Studs can and do come from anywhere!

  238. RAMhawg RAMhawg says:

  239. AusTx Hog AusTx Hog says:

Thanks, JT. We are on the same page about Tyler. Do you think our recruiting sufferred over the amount of time Ryan spent “exploring” the NFL?

You know it affected the coaches … i.e. they had to spend more time talking to him than they did with recruits.

Also, it gave credence to those pundits who were saying he wouldn’t come back and, thus, diminishing our chances to compete in the West.

It had to effect recruiting, I’d think, although I am fine with the way Ryan handled it overall because in the end it created a buzz around his 2010 season which will benefit Arkansas.

  240. hogfan1509 hogfan1509 says:

Fact is, no matter the recruiting, if you don’t get your hands on a Mallet, Tebow, Ingram, McCallister, McFadden, etc you are never going to win the SEC! Thats what I’ve got against the Boise Sts, Utahas, TCUs, etc. Yes they are good teams, but they get to position themselves for the BCS based on one or two semi tough games. If they played Tex, Ala, Fla, USC, etc yearly you would probably never hear form them at crunch time (much lest the rest of those teams conferences).

  241. JT JT says:

I dont know if it affected recruiting too much, but I do know one thing for sure: It didnt help.

  242. The Voice of Reason The Voice of Reason says:

Can everyone please stop taking the rival or scout or espn rankings as the gospel truth about a player or their potential abilities. Since some of you appear to live off the “stars” that these services bestow on players, why don’t you look at the score these services have given some of our recruits.

Per Rivals, out of 22 commitments (which isn’t completely accurate because of the Byrd commit) 15 of our recruits are either .1 or .2 away from being 4* players. With my understanding of math, there’s not much difference between 5.7 and 5.8. If I’m wrong, please correct me.

Those of you who are complaining about not recruiting for defense, per rivals, we actually have more defensive players committed than offensive (not counting kickers since they work for both sides). We’ve got 6 offensive, 8 defensive and 6 athletes committed. We already know that they’re planning on using some of these athletes on the defensive side.

Yes, we’ve missed on some recruits but there’s not one school out there that gets everyone they go after. Not Florida, not USC, not Texas, no one. Do we need defensive linemen? Yes. Have we missed on some top d-linemen? Yes. Do we still have a chance with some very good d-linemen? Yes. There’s no need to panic about this class. The recruiting services don’t evaluate every athlete in every class. They don’t spend the hours and hours that our staff has spent watching these kids. One of our recruits said in an interview that we have been watching him since he was a sophomore. We’ve obviously had some interest in this kid for sometime and I’m sure he’s not the only one we’ve been watching. This staff hasn’t gotten everyone they’ve wanted but they’re not just filling scholarships spots with whoever wants to come and play either. I’ll trust Bobby P on this matter more than I will a bunch of message board posters. If some of you knew as much as you thought you did about recruiting then maybe you’d be employed by a university doing some recruiting or a service doing some scouting, instead of sitting behind a computer waiting for the latest updates.

Sorry for the rant…well, not really. I just get tired of the boards getting clogged up with all this doom and gloom crap. We’ve got a professional coach now, not a professional nail bitter. I’m not really worried about our recruiting or our coaching until they give me a reason to worry.

I hope that we can just improve on 2009, and try to improve on this years recruiting class in 2011, as it is looking. But having said that, 7-5 next year is a real possibility. So is 10-2. We just have to make sure that we recognize what we failed at this year and improve.

  244. hogfan1509 hogfan1509 says:

Mallet only affects recruiting when your going after QB, WR, RB, TE. Defensive players look at the Defensive coaches, past results, and who they will play with or need to beat out for PT. How about some faith in BP, the other coaches and especially the players (who also recruit). Would you rather have HDN back! I don’t remember any of the rating services giving a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP to a team for recruiting. Sounds like to most of you, that is the goal. Win the recruiting battle, and we are the best. Just have to show up and because we won the recruiting battle, we win.

I didn’t read Mr P’s comments is that we won’t be in the hunt next year but that we need to be consistent Top 15 recruiters if we want to be an upper echelon SEC team.

I agree … where I differ is that I believe it is OK that we are looking to fill specific needs this year and not really worrying about getting the most stars next to the name.

Example: I’d rather have 2 solid 3 star defensive players this year than have in-staters Dyer and Mosely because I think we are pretty well set at the positions where they would be competing.

The concern is BP needs to actually get those big bodies on defense to provide much-needed depth on defense. I happen to believe he will get there before NSD.

I’d build a fence around the state. Since our recruiting base is a disadvantage we need to keep the SEC level talent at home. It’s easier to make an Arkansan a Razorback than it is to make a Floridian a Razorback. I live in Cabot. We’ve all heard Trey Biddy say many times that they are slow to update the ratings — especially after a kids senior year. Smith out of NC — with all the post season awards he has received is more than a 3 star and if the staff found one that was under rated I’m sure they found more. Most of these guys are rated 3 star or better. If half of them turn out like Franklin or childs I’m fine with that.

I stole this post from a message board but I had to post it because it makes real sense to me:
    ———————————————————–
“This won’t go over well with the doom and gloom on the board, but let me stir the pot a little bit…

Since Rivals is apparently the supreme authority in player evaluations I took a close look at this year’s class versus prior years and noticed something… from top to bottom this is a very solid class.

A 5.6 Rivals rating is basically a middle of the pack recruit and anything below that is below average. Right now we have 14 out of our 19 rated players at 5.6 or higher. So, 74% of this class is considered to be above average. To put that in perspective last year (considered by many as our best class ever) we had 77% at a 5.6 or higher rating. Previous years are listed below.”

% of Arkansas recruits with 5.6 or higher rating from Rivals:
    2010 – 74% (14/19)
    2009 – 77% (24/31)
    2008 – 38% (10/26)
    2007 – 48% (13/27)
    2006 – 32% (7/22)
    2005 – 39% (9/23)
    2004 – 32% (8/25)

The main difference this year compared to all the other years is that we don’t have the 4* and 5* superstar names at the top of the list that greatly exaggerate the Rivals team rankings. Instead Petrino is just putting together another top to bottom solid class and adding depth that has been neglected in years past as shown in these numbers.

I can do the research and repost all the “positive” posts i’ve written. I don’t think it’s necessary. Here’s what I believe:

    1. We are headed in the right direction.
    2. Petrino’s first two class were really good. Especially, last year’s.
    3. I believe we will be in the SEC Championship next year.
    4. I think we underacheived recruiting this year.
    5. Because our recruiting base is so small, it’s important we keep SEC level Arkansas athletes home. It’s easier to make an SEC level Arkansan a Razorback than it is to make an SEC level Floridian a Razorback.
    6. Next year’s class is very important as far as keeping the momentum going and we are off to a fantastic start with 2 instate commitments. Let’s keep it going! If we have 10 SEC level athletes instate, think about how great and easier our recruiting will be if we had 8 of them

  346. AugustaHog AugustaHog says:

For those of you talking about UGA’s QB next year, it won’t be Logan Gray. From my understanding, he’s being moved from the QB spot(not sure if this rumor is true or not), but a friend of mine who follows UGA very closely fully expects the QB battle to come down to their two stud recruits from last year Aaron Murray and Zach Mettenberger. Either way, we should face somebody who hasn’t had but a couple games experience. If we happen to win that game, it would be a huge momentum boost going in the Bammer game. If we get to 4-0, watch out, the rest are very winnable games. UGA and Bama will decide where our season goes. Dropping those two would be a haymaker to our high expectations.

  347. hog fan in florida hog fan in florida says:

I agree debunker….especially with the new offensive line coach…maybe he can help the O line block better on runs…I mean we have studs to feed in the backfield. LOL

MrP if you would focus on some of those in more of your posts people wouldn’t keep attacking your posts. BTW how high does this class need to go for you to give it better than an F? Lets says in the Rival’s rankings.

  349. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

bc, we are about two weeks from signing day. It’s hard to talk about anything else. I don’t care about our rival ranking right now. I’d just be glad to land a couple of 300 lb DTs. Since I don’t see us landing an impact DE I hope Ambrose or Evans steps up at the RE spot.

  350. Hawgfan100 Hawgfan100 says:

Our new OL coach from Nevada was part of ncaa history (first program to have three 1,000 yard rushers on the same team). I’d be very happy with half that production next year, as long as we stay somewhere in the neighborhood on our passing numbers from last year.

  351. AusTx Hog AusTx Hog says:

AugustaHog, I completely agree … Games 3 and 4 will determine our season.

On the other hand, if there is one game that I think we could lose and still go all the way to Atlanta and the National Title … it is the game in Athens.

The teams playing in Atlanta this year will likely each have a loss is my prediction.

  352. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

this spring. If we get a RE and MLB to step up then I’ll be happy with where our defense is. I’d like to have the 300 lb DTs for depth. If we don’t land them then I hope Pat Jones, Alfred Davis, and LaVunce Askew step up.

  353. bc bc says:

Wow Hawgfan100 that is incredible. I guess we know why he is here now. Wouldn’t it be great if N Davis and R Wingo could repeat what Felix and Darren did and we still had the passing attack. That gives a whole new meaning to fantasy football.

  354. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

We ran some Pistol last year so getting our new OL coach makes sense. I like the hire.

  355. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

I wonder if Petrino has visions of B. Mitchell running the Pistol like Nevada had their QB run it? I didn’t want to butcher the kid’s name.

  356. Hawgfan100 Hawgfan100 says:

;^) I watched Nevada play one game (against Boise). The only problem they had, besides having to attack a pretty stout run defense, was virtually no passing attack. They were still successful but the lack of balance proved fatal in the end.

  357. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

I totally forgot about Youngblood running it. I know he could run the Pistol.

  358. bc bc says:

I hope Cink can help our D ends. We need to get more pressure on the QB and safeties that will keep the receivers in front of them. If we can accomplish those two things I’ll be happy. A better KO and punting game will help a lot too. I think we have made strides toward the kicking game. If we could carry this year’s red-zone D to our half of the field next year we would be awesome.

  359. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

Does anyone disagree with these points?

  363. Ron in Germany Ron in Germany says:

I am excited about the new hires as well ! But the OL coach wasn’t brought in to convert us to a pistol offense. He was brought in to help develope a running game.

This is Petrino’s offense (not coach Chris Klenakis offense) He was hired as an OL coach.

  364. Hawgfan100 Hawgfan100 says:

#4. Though if you expect a Top 10 recruiting class every year, we going to ‘underachieve’ most years.

#7. Only in that it takes time to achieve ‘top team’ status (how ever you’re measuring it) and I don’t think you’ve been nearly patient enough.

  367. bc bc says:

Sorry you are correct. I ment Caldwell. Too many new C’s I guess. I’m hopefull for #3 but think we have to get by Bama and Auburn. #4 I think we are overall in good shape. Fewer lower rated than in the past. #5 I’d rather have players that our staff believes fit the system, the team and have outstanding character than have them just because they are from instate. Not interested in Divas. Sometimes you won’t get a recruit because he wants to go Ivy League — and I cannot blame them.

  368. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

I’m patient with what’s going on on the field. If you go back to our preseason predictions I nailed each game
including which bowl we’d go to. We are where I thought we would be, except in recruiting. I knew we’d not have as good a class because we weren’t going to have as many scholarships to offer. Even Ron in Germany thought we were going to have a Top 10 class this year.

  369. Big Boi Big Boi says:

I see us using the pistol like other ppl use the wildcat(in 2011 when Mallets gone i didn`t mean as are base set) I look for Tenarius to be 250ish next year still a lil small but he`s so fast and strong I also see Colton Nash coming on if he gets to stay at DE

  370. Hawgfan100 Hawgfan100 says:

“Will Tenarius be able to play DE on rushing downs?”

Will probably depend on his ‘want to’ level. I remember a guy named Cherico (for you youngsters out there, check him out on youtube–one of the finest, and smallest, NTs the Razorbacks have ever had) who took a backseat to no one on ‘want to’ and won the accolades/awards to prove it.

I’m concerned that should Wright have to bulk up to play the run, he’ll lose the speed which makes him so difficult for opposing tackles to deal with now.

I’m sure BP has forgotten more football than all of us put together have ever known. I am so proud that he came to Arkansas & in a short amount of time, I think he will have us as high or higher than we’ve been in many, many years. No, I don’t agree with every play that’s called or every substitute made, but I have total faith that he knows better than I do. Please be positive [you know some of the players may be reading this, as well. I know we used to have a fence built around the state, but that was long before ESPN, the internet, & people being as mobile as they are today. 419. DarthHog DarthHog says:

JT, dude calm down. I will give it to you that your odds of winning go up when you have the best players but the players on the recuiting web sites are rated the way coaches evaluate them. If a player gets enough offers from BCS schools all of a sudden his number of stars goes up what does that have to do with his ability? Nothing.

Florida state is a great example of a school who is regarded as great closer in recruiting. They have top 25 classes every year but over the last 5 seasons they finished 7-6 three times and had no more then 9 wins counting there bowl win any of the last 5 seasons. If you believe in the coaching staff then trust that they know what they are doing. They can’t do more then offer the players any way at least CBP is recruiting on a more national level then what we are used to so give it time.

  420. Win Win says:

I am always amazed at how much faith some people put in stars, and ratings by these so-called “experts”. You people do realize that these guys are only right about half the time, don’t you … Especially when you get further down the pecking order away from the five star recruits. If a coach feels the need to offer a player, it’s because he’s seen something in that young man that we armchair wanna-bes can’t see! How many four and three star recruits end up being flops? Then you’ve got the really low rated guys that go on and end up in the NFL, like Jonathon Luigs and Jamaal Anderson, both of whom were ranked as 2-star recruits!
I say, lay off Petrino & Co. and let them do their thing. The 2010 class will end up being pretty solid. They won’t be able to sign a Top 20 class every year…..yet. 2011 is looking pretty great though. There just isn’t a lot of top notch recruits in-state this year, and losing a guy like Dyer (in my estimation because he’s selfish and doesn’t want the competition) can hurt. Arkansas was needing to concentrate on defense, and I think they have done that with this class, especially if they can get Byran Jones.

  421. Bigfoot Bigfoot says:

Hey folks, this is a recruiting blog, not a political one. Personally, I believe in what you are saying about treaties, gun control, etc. But this is NOT the forum for it. There must be others is you look for them.

I have taken the roster of players returning for 2010. When you look at it, then you will have concerns for the 2011 Senior Class. Of 8 CBs, 5 will be seniors and use up their elgibility. Only 3 will have time left for the 2011 season. LB is very thin. I count 6 with PT. THere are other positions that will be hit hard, too. Then there is the question about some of our WR’s that if they have great seasons, and you just know they will, will enter the draft.

It appears to me that BP & staff have taken these things into consideration in this recruiting class. He will be able to have a couple of good redshirts hidden away.

According to ESPN, we will have about 30 seniors. Of course there are several that are not real players.

I think the article was on collegefootballnews.com….if anyone can find, please post it.

  425. HogInBama HogInBama says:

Since when did Arkansas become to good for solid 3* prospects? I really want to know. I could see if we had a class full of 2*s but the only two 2* players we have are kickers. I am dying to know when we got to the point where accepting 3* commits was a “trainwreck”. When we get our stud DLs I am sure you guys will style whine about a darn class ranking. We are signing some very good athletes. Based on there legit measurable, they will have the size, speed, and strength to compete with anyone. What I see on film shows me that they have great football IQ. When did we become too high and mighty for 3* players? You should focus on what is in the class and how it meets your team needs as opposed to how it is ranked as a whole. There are about nearly 30 classes ranked ahead of ours that I wouldn’t want anything to do with.

  426. OKOFCOURSE OKOFCOURSE says:

Exactly HogInBama, I couldn’t have said it any better myself. So we need to just take a bunch of walkons and not take any 5 stars? We probably should tell Mallett to take a hike then. Would rather have 5 star Ryan Mallett or a walkon from Harrison playing QB next year?

MrP, I agree on much of your recruiting concerns, but this political babble is laughable. Lets PLEASE stick to sports on this forum. I served proudly in the Navy during Desert Shield/Storm and I would die for this country with gun in hand, clutching my JKV of the Holy Bible.
NOW, I am done with that topic on THIS forum.

If we don’t pull at least two quality DTs that qualify(Calvin, Jones, and/or the 300lb Fla kid) I will be disappointed lack of fulfilling the most critical need we have. At least in the secondary there were quality redshirts and injured, that would be back. If you take away DD Jones, our DT rotation is Duke level talent. I had heard Alfred Jones was a beast last spring, but he didn’t seem to make waves this past season.
Depth at LB and DE is also a concern. I just don’t understand getting all these Athletes. They will translate into WR’s(which we don’t need), CBs(yes, maybe one or two but no more), Safeties(a few lbs on a couple and they can be solid to very good players). But what good does it do when the opponents OL have wiped out our DL and are knocking our LB’s back. That leaves players like Trent R. and Ingrm wiping the field up with our secondary. You talk about yds after contact. They can carry our entire secondary all the way into the endzone.
That is my concern with the lack of BIG, QUALITY, Dtackles. I know it ain’t over, but I’m still worried. I’m through talking know.

What areas on need aren’t being addressed MR P? We will get our DLs and then all needs will be addressed yet some of our fans will still complain about the class ranking. We had trouble run blocking. CBP goes out and hires the OC who coordinated the nations top running game to come in as an OL coach. We are having trouble with DL play and DL recruiting. CBP goes out and hires Steve Caldwell to coach and recruit. We are having trouble with punting and placekicking. CBP goes out and signs Louisiana’s two time 1st-team all-state punter who also had touchbacks on 60-64 kickoffs.

We need LBs. They have Courtney Gatson, Braylon Mitchell, Chris Smith and possibly Shaydon Akuna. Our needs are being met and I like Coach Caldwell’s chances at reeling in some of these stud D-linemen this coming weekend. We are taking the necessary steps to compete in the SEC West every year. Last year we could sell kids on early playing time. This year we are recruiting off of last year’s 5-7 season without a promise for much playing time. I think this class is solid top to bottom. If we add another stud ‘B and 3 Stud DTs it goes to great imo. I also can’t wait to see what Coach Caldwell can get out of Bequette, Tank Wright, Nash, Callender and the rest of our DEs. I think T.Wright will become a hellacious pass rusher under Caldwell.

And Mallett stop throwing the foootballll toooooooo dam hard for 5 or 10 yards pass. really ridicules, thought bobby would say something about that first 3 game or something but mallett still doing that in lsu game. just tell your wr to go faster like they should and throw easy so wr can catch.

Rzbck, His name is Michael Harris.

  447. Robbie Robbie says:

I think a fair amount of Hog fans who follow recruiting will put an asterisk by this class because Michael Dyer is not coming here. A lot of people will point to Madre Hill, Cedric Cobbs and Darren McFadden as examples of why that type of talent needs to stay in-state. I can’t fault that argument along the lines of talent, but I know that the guys I mentioned really wanted to be here and we really needed impact at those positions when they were being recruited. If you can take a 5* RB, regardless of where they’re from, then 10 times out of 10 you do it. If they turn you down, it doesn’t necessarily mean that there’s something inherently wrong with your recruiting, it just means that a player’s perception of how they would fit in to that team did not meet their expectations.

Now, if the cupboard was bare at a position, let’s stick with RB, and missing out on a 5* RB will seriously handicap your offense for the foreseeable future, then it becomes time to reevaluate the program. I don’t get that feeling right now.

  448. MikeATL MikeATL says:

I was big on Dyer until I saw him play on tv, twice. I don’t think he’s worth five stars. And for what reason would you put an asterisk?

  449. Robbie Robbie says:

@ MikeATL I wouldn’t put an asterisk, but some fans probably will until after they see how Dyer does in college, then they’ll say I told you so/I’m here for crow. Similar to Kodi Burns and/or Lee Ziemba situation.

  450. hogfan1509 hogfan1509 says:

I guess there are plenty of reasons that Dyer didn’t come to Ark, here are a few.

    >Didn’t like the number of carries he could expect to get.
    >Hogs loaded at the position and he wasn’t sure of this chances to be
    the top back.
    >Just wasn’t a die hard Hog fan.
    >Coaching staff realized that the potnetial for discourse was greater
than the need of another RB.
    >He just didn’t gel with the coaches and like Auburn’s better.

And on and on, he isn’t comming so lets all get over it! I think we make ourselves look second rate pining over something we don’t have. The guys were getting want to be Hogs, lets welcome them!

  451. Matt Matt says:

DL that will come????? We need them now. I hope that now will be the coming 2 weeks. I am trusting that that will get done. Coaching players UP isn’t an issue with this staff. They are excellent (Willie still needs to prove something). I can see the offensive production hovering around that 480ypg this coming season, but it will take a reasonable step in the right direction by this defense to get us to Atlanta and to a BCS bowl. The front 7 is where it begins and is where we are lacking.
Don’t you guys love this repetitiveness(sp?). For anyone to be thrilled with the class to this point either knows of a big commitment coming soon or is blind. I hope it is the first one. Anyway, I love the kids that want to be here – Go Hogs!

Also, as far as the recruitment of Dyer. I read or saw and interview (can’t remember where), with Dyer saying something to the fact that Malzhan was showing more love than Petrino… I’m assuming as in talking weekly or more… – Now, don’t head coaches have limitations as to how much they can talk to or see a recruit compared to offensive coordinators? Or am I just making something up?

  454. Misisipy Hog Misisipy Hog says:

The argument that the schools that are always on top are the ones that have the top recruiting class does not hold water for a number of reasons. # 1 There are many examples of schools that have top recruiting classes that do not break into the top ten. # 2 There are many examples of schools that do not have top ten rated recruting classes that do break into the top ten. One other thing that has not really been pointed out is that the examples that are always used are Florida and Alabama, Top classes in recruiting, Top ten team. These schools have the ability to boost a kids recruiting status just from the offer itself but the other thing is these schools have two of the best coaches in the country. Ark has not reached the point where an offer from us boosts a kid from a high 3* to a 4* but we do have one of the best coaches in the country so eventually the results should be the same. The correlation is not as much as the ranking of the class as it is the coaching staffs involved. We do need the best we can get and eventually we will get the respect that generated the boosts in ratings on players.

  455. oldhog oldhog says:

Don’t forget HDN gave up his birthright to get the Springdale 4 out of 5. The recruiting class was ranked fairly high; however, the end result was poor. 456. hogfan1509 hogfan1509 says:

It wouldn’t be suprising if Dyer wound up like Mustain, standing on the sidelines thinking of what might have been. Auburn is still recruiting RBs. GREAT post, diehardhog, and it deserves repeating:

Previous years are listed below.

% of Arkansas recruits with 5.6 or higher rating from Rivals:
    2010 – 74% (14/19)
    2009 – 77% (24/31)
    2008 – 38% (10/26)
    2007 – 48% (13/27)
    2006 – 32% (7/22)
    2005 – 39% (9/23)
    2004 – 32% (8/25)

The main difference this year compared to all the other years is that we don’t have the 4* and 5* superstar names at the top of the list that greatly exaggerate the Rivals team rankings. Instead Petrino is just putting together another top to bottom solid class and adding depth that has been neglected in years past as shown in these numbers.”

Jamaal Anderson was a 2*WR. He was not a 2*DL. Also, why don’t you compare apples to apples instead of apples to oranges? You’re comparing QB’s to DL. Ryan Mallet is also a 5*QB. He seems to be turning out ok don’t you think?

I’m not too worried about the recruiting. BP gets paid to worry about recruiting not me. He has pulled rabbits out of his hat the last 2 seasons so why is everybody so worried that he can’t do it this year? Arkansas recruiting under BP looks like that Verizon 3G map. It goes everywhere.

If we stay healthy on the DL, and the redshirts and backups really step up, we will be better (how much better?). The DL in this class are nice…when you consider them 2-3 years from now. I didn’t think we were interested in the Greenwood kid because of his speed…? I didn’t think we even went as far as offering him..

And Joey, i think getting on youtube and talking crap to some Texas people would just be a waste of my time…

Seriously it would literally take me forever to type anything with my chicken peckin… :)

We will go 7 deep at defensive end next year with or without a good recruit.

Coming back are Bequette, Tenarious Wright, Ambrose, Caleb Evens, Adam Pearce and the redshirt Ryan Calendar who is a 6-7 load from Texas who can lay a hit. Also, Petrino has moved the big load Tight End Colton Nash to DE.

  511. hognaustin hognaustin says:

While some say that “stars” aren’t that important all you need to do is go back and see the last 5-7 years of recruiting rankings! The top 10-15 over the last 5 years are consistently vying for the nat’l title and the top five over the last 5 years have won the BCS championship. “Star’s” – the ability of the athlete – really do matter. This is not to say that coaching is important – it matters very much – but it also depends on what kind of athlete the coach has to work with. WE WILL NOT win the SEC nor compete for a nat’l championship until we consistently rank in the top 10 in recruiting. As delusional as some are on this site who think we will win both the SEC and nat’l championship next year, statistics and history prove otherwise. If this year’s recruiting class is average and not ranked in the top 25 we will finish near the top in the West – maybe 2nd but probably 3rd – but we won’t win it. Who the coach is matters and we have a great one in Bobby but we need very good and great athletes to compete in the SEC. Right now our current recruiting class is shaping up to be “good” or above average but not one that will push us over the top. Let’s face it great players – four and five stars – make great teams! The relationship between recruiting rankings and BCS championships don’t lie.

  512. dwp007 dwp007 says:

Based upon DIEHARDHOG’s earlier post, which I thought was an excellent piece and copied above, the incoming class may lack some 4* and 5* studs as seen from recent times, but compares quite well to the last two classes, from a talent standpoint, from top to bottom.

Overall, thus far, using the Rivals’ statistical information and data, the class is solid.

I would still sure love to see a couple of big ‘ol nasty D lineman come on board between now and signing day ;)

  513. OKOFCOURSE OKOFCOURSE says:

I personally don’t like to offer a scholarship to a DL unless he has at one felony conviction (OF COURSE, I am just kidding).

Seriously, if we get at least 2 big defensive linemen and possibly 3 then this might just be the class that puts us over the top and I want to hear everyone talk about 4 and 5 stars being the important factor. The important factor in my opinion is finding the player who fits your system, their heart, and their work ethic. By the way that’s just like the Pros (at least the Pros who make a difference).

  514. Bigfoot Bigfoot says:

But I would Love to get Shaydon Akuna next weekend! He is a STUD at LB!

  518. GonzoHog GonzoHog says:

    MLBs to be exact, bigfoot.
It’s probably been since at least the Jermaine Petty years (early ’90s) that we had a 240 lb. MLB with speed.
That’s what I want for the future of our defense. I don’t care if they’re 215 or 220 coming out of high school, just as long as they have good speed and project to eventually be good players by our staff.
Jason Veltcamp will do the rest in the weight room.
I’m confident our returning D-linemen will be better next season.
Let’s keep our fingers crossed for a couple of new ones added to our depthchart on NSD.

  519. GonzoHog GonzoHog says:

Sorry bigfoot, make that early 2000s

Hog in Austin….your right on the majority of your points. There will be some poeple who will get mad about it, but it’s true. Mr Perfect and others get crucified over it. I would hope to finish 1st in the division, but 2nd would probably get us to the BCS. 3rd and it’s Cotton or Capital One. I believe that we have a great chance to go 9-3 in 2010. But 1 or 2 injuries, with our lack of depth, we could go 7-5. I’m not hoping for that though…I would love for us to go to the BCS and get a hold of one of those weak assed Big East schools or even Boise to shut those guys up….

  521. OKOFCOURSE OKOFCOURSE says:

If we get a couple of DLs this will be a really great class considering it is such a down year for SEC caliber football players in the state. Petrino had to spread the net nation wide and did a great job (i.e. the linebackers, the speedy wide outs, the Florida, Oklahoma “steals” and the Missour duet). I will be pleased if they all sign.

  528. Big Boi Big Boi says:

If we can just get Bryan Jones and Calvin Smith this class will fill it needs. Yes I would have loved to have filled them with 4-5* kids but we got some real nice future all SEC players. Marquel Wade is a great player. Chris Smith will be a Terell suggs type force at DE. Brad Hefley plays real hard I know he`s going to get a look at TE but the way he tackles it be hard to keep him off of defense. Eric Bennett is very similar to Wade with all the depth at WR he might get moved to CB but he has a lot of shake. Jeremiah Jackson is a future starter at DT and isn`t getting much love. Braylon Mitcell will be the best MLB since Petty. And William Russ will make the biggest impact out of all are recruits this year we could have used his leg this year.

  529. Piglett Piglett says:

Rodney…we are not “offering” Watson! Trust me they would not let him go home without a yes unless CBP feels he has someone else he wants more! Cadwell is gonna hit a home run!! Just sit back and watch! WPS! BTW 12 (13 if you count Humphrey) of the 14 recuits that came in left very solid for the hogs!! Not bad!!

  530. Rodney Rodney says:

Piglett they Did “Offer” Watson! Go to Rivals and see Yourself! They are not Guaranteed they will land Jones, Barnett, or Smith! So any D Linemen they can get they will be happy to have! Willy offered Watson Himself Piglett…!

I will say let Petrino judge the talent. You have to think. The number 3 TE in the nation didnt receive one offer last year until he went to USC camp. he only had 12 catches, and was discovered at USC camp.He was a nobody until Pete Carroll stuck his neck out there. This year he went off and had an offer from everyone in the world. It happens. What about Scotty Thurman in Basketball?

  539. DIEHARDHOG DIEHARDHOG says:

I just keep jacking this guys posts, but they all make sense.

For those of you who did see my others, and put everything on BCS offers and “SEC” talent, see below:

Yr Commits BCS Offers SEC Offers
    2005 24 27 9 This is McFadden & Felix’s class.
    2006 26 59 9 This is Springdale 5. They are 6/9 SEC offers.
    2007 27 41 7
    Petrino Arrives
    2008 26 64 24
    2009 31 95 23
    2010 22 70 17 Only using verbal commits

  540. Bigfoot Bigfoot says:

Diehard, interesting numbers. But did you look at the ttal offers by Arkansas made? I don’t know if there is a way of keeping up with these. At one time I tracked these and recorded them to a spreadsheet. There must be well over 200 offers made. Some of these may have been tongue in cheek to guys we knew were going elsewhere.

  541. dwp007 dwp007 says:

Better than Great. There are many different ways of looking at things.

Top to bottom, from purely a talent standpoint, this will be a very solid class. Check out some of DIEHARDHOG’S posts above, particularly the one referencing RIVALS’ statistical information and data involving Arkansas’ recruiting classes over the past several years.

While lacking in 4* and 5* recruits, this class compares very well, overall, to the 2008 and ’09 classes and is a considerable bounce upward from the preceding classes brought in under Houston Nutt.

With a couple of more defensive guys, preferably on the DL, the Razorbacks are going to be just fine.

  542. BigHogFan BigHogFan says:

I have a hard time determining how RIVALS gets their rankings. Arkansas is currently ranked 54. Purdue is right above us at 53.
Purdue has 8 guys that are ranked a 5.6 or above. Arkansas has 15. Purdue also has 7 guys that are a 5.4 or lower. Arkansas has 4, and 2 of them are kickers…..this is stupid!!

  543. OKOFCOURSE OKOFCOURSE says:

I noticed that also BigHogFan and the Purdue case is the most puzzling; it doesn’t seem to have any rhyme or reason to it. I would like them to explain their rating system because at the very least it is confusing.

  544. hogfan1509 hogfan1509 says:

My opinion is that there are a good sized handful of players that are no doubt guarenteed difference makers and the rest are somenoes opinion. When your rating someone a 5.7 and another a 5.8 the difference is so slight that it’s just a guess. Ant they go even further in their points system, for instance a CB might be ranked 50th and another 51st? Now tell me, how can anyone make that call for sure? What really gets me is that the Russ kid rated a two star has a very good chance to be a big difference maker! Lets face it, until we get ourselves in a few BCS bowls we’ll always be on the low end of the guesses those guys make. BP is a good evaluater of talent and a very good field coach, my guess is that with a really good season we’ll get alot more love from the so called experts!

  545. BigHogFan BigHogFan says:

No doubt, RIVALS dropped the ball here. PURDUE is just one example. Most of the classes RIVALS has in the 30-40 range are not any better than ours.
That being said, there in no way to rank a players intangible assets. Most of these guys ARKANSAS has committed are multi-sport standouts, With great athleticism and long arms. I would take this class over most of them that RIVALS has in the top 40. Here’s to a strong finish, and I don’t care where we end up in the STUPID rankings.

  546. RazorRandy RazorRandy says:

I said it when he committed and I’ll say it again. Russ is going to have a huge impact on our season this year. He’ll be the biggest difference maker of this new class, easily.

  547. hogfan1509 hogfan1509 says:

I think so too RazorRandy, his leg on kickoffs alone will probably stop several opponent score next season, not to mention field position that may add several Hog scores to the sseason! He really could be the difference in 2-3 games next year!

  548. OKOFCOURSE OKOFCOURSE says:

I agree the Special Teams will be the best unit improvement next year because of him and let’s not forget the addition of “incoming” Marquel Wade (5 punts taken back for TDs last year and 8 back to the house if you also count his junior year. That is going to be something the rest of the SEC is going to have to deal with or pay the consequences.

  549. bob l bob l says:

Rivals rankings are very top heavy. They give points for the player’s stars, plus points for his national ranking, plus bonus points for players they consider impact players. Thus, a player like Dyer is woth well over 100 points in their rankings, while a 3 star is typically worth 8-20 points. I don’t care how good Dyer is, he’s not better than 5 – 10 quality 3 stars.

The naysayers here have ignored the fact that this class is solid throughout. The number of offers from other SEC and BCS schools that diehard posted shows clearly that none of these guys are reaches, contrary to sme claims otherwise. FWIW, Scout has the Hogs up to 44 now, with another big weekend to come.

  550. PK PK says:

i am most interested in seeing who gets the PR job after spring and who is gonna be behind Jerico at that Jack spot… i know rasner was showing promise, also the incoming Safety D.Smith looks like he could fill the role well

  551. BigHogFan BigHogFan says:

I too think Russ will have a major impact…..Also, I keep hearing such good things about Chris Smith, he could also be a difference maker this year, with the departure of Wendel Davis.

We have alot of unproven or under-sized linebackers aside from Jerry Franklin and Freddy Burton.

If Smith cannot fill this void, Austin Moss, Terrell Williams, Courtney Gaston, or Braylon Mitchell will have to step up. All 4 of these young guys have SEC size and speed at this position.

Is Calendar really going to line up at linebacker? At 6’8″?

  552. dwp007 dwp007 says:

The booming leg of Will Russ should go quite well with Ryan Mallett’s cannon arm. The kid has the potential to make a huge and immediate impact.

I believe this class to be solid, top to bottom. Many of the guys have multiple offers from other SEC and BCS schools, as DIEHARD pointed out. Hopefully, we can close strong with some defensive flavor.

  553. BigHogFan BigHogFan says:

No doubt. dwp007. Alot of these guys picked up multiple BCS offers after ARKANSAS offered them. This is a testament to coach Petrino’s eye for talent.

  554. Wu Pig Sue E. Wu Pig Sue E. says:

I’m curious where Brad Hefley will play, I expect him to redshirt, but where TE?….LB?….DE?

  555. Elmo871 Elmo871 says:

I never liked Dyer…I’m glad we didn’t sign him. I never thought he was that good. He was smaller than everyone said, I thought he was soft, overrated, a prima donna, and he played at that little school on Hwy 10 against inferior teams. Plus, when he played in the Under Armour game, he got laid out by bigger guys. The same is gonna happen to him when he plays the Hogs and the rest of the SEC.

The class this year isn’t as big as we hoped but there are some decent kids on it. We just have to get what we can, and have a good 2010, and it will help for 2011.

These numbers are skewed. Several in that D MAC class committed very early and ended their recruiting including D MAC. Do you really think only 3 schools offered him like Rivals says?

Secondly, out of the 70 BCS offers this current class has, 10 belong to Big Tex alone.

inferior competition? Like the inferior competition Joe Adams and DJ Williams (CAC) played against? Or Broderick Green, Neal Barlow, and Parker Mack (Pulaski Academy) played against? And those are just off the top of my head.

  559. DIEHARDHOG DIEHARDHOG says:

Ok, so ignore 2005 completely, and take 10 away from 2010.

You still have more BCS offers than 2006 or 2007, as many as 2008.

  560. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

DIEHARD, do some research and compare this current class with Auburn’s class. Arkansas and Auburn are both SEC West schools and both finished the season 8-5. I’d like to see those numbers.

Why are we comparing Petrino to the “mediocre” coach that was here before? Isn’t that why we got rid of him?

    By DIEHARDHOG on Jan 19, 2010 @ 11:31am

No, don’t ignore 2005. 2005 and 2006 shows us what a top heavy class looks like. Those two classes are why we are in the shape we are in now (weak defense, relying on underclassmen).

  565. OKOFCOURSE OKOFCOURSE says:

    And whose fault is that?

  566. bob l bob l says:

again, Mr P, Rivals rankings reward those top heavy classes. The depth of this class far outshines 2005 and 2006. Kinada like putting all your eggs in one basket. When the guy turns out to be McFadden, you look great. when he turns out to be Mustain, your class is way overrated.

Arkansas missed on some big-time guys, hard to deny that. But to paint this class as a failure is nonsense.

  567. oldhog oldhog says:

    By OKOFCOURSE on Jan 19, 2010 @ 11:49am

I usually won’t respond to you, but this time I’m making an exception. Houston Dale Nutt is fully responsible. That’s why we got rid of him. That’s why we got a real coach and that’s why we are paying Petrino real money. To improve this team.

  569. OKOFCOURSE OKOFCOURSE says:

  572. Blake Blake says:

This is class is more solid throughout than many top heavy classes we have seen.

The class as a unique blend or size, speed, and athleticism. Also it is a nice blend of offense and defense, and players who have the ability to make an impact on either side of the ball.

I like this class, and know it could be better. But I also see it as solid and the remaining pieces could make it a very good class regardless of how it is ranked by a recruiting service.

Next year the Hogs will not be seeking as many freshman to play right away. That is a known. We have led the SEC the last two years in freshman played/started. So that will not be needed this year.

Still there are some good players that I believe will make an impact on the team in 2010 in some role, and others that will have the standard redshirt year to get bigger stronger and understand the playbook.

I have not heard Petrino come out and tell everyone that we are going to be going into rebuilding years like his predecessor did, and I like the type of players and development I have seen from Petrino so far at Arkansas.

I think that we are in good hands.

  573. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

My biggest complaints about this class are:

    1. We let our rivals raid the state. I believe it’s easier to make Arkansans Razorbacks than it is to make a Floridian a Hog.
    2. Where’s the beef? We have some defensive lineman committed but they’re all undersized. We can still fix this however.
    3. We got beat on some recruits by some mediocre teams. I can stomach losing a recruit to Florida or Alabama, but Texas A&M? Auburn? Come on, Man!

MrP, you mean to tell me Texas has bolted to the Pac 10? I sure don’t blame them but I thought the PAC 10 did not want Texas or aTm.

    By OKOFCOURSE on Jan 19, 2010 @ 12:16pm

I looked at the site again and it does have Texas as a Pac-10 school and USC as an IND. I don’t know why. The numbers should be correct and that’s the important part of the post.

  576. OKOFCOURSE OKOFCOURSE says:

No, I think I made my points!!!

  577. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

I clearly made mine. Bobby Petrino is one of the highest paid coaches in the NCAA.

Did anyone else see MrP’s post that he said his “paste” was messed up because I don’t see it now? Am I seeing things or is the “Mothership” screwing with me?

  579. cdavidson Richard Davenport says:

Don’t add words that imply profanity.

If I see any posts that intended to stir another I’ll delete it.

  580. OKOFCOURSE OKOFCOURSE says:

I didn’t read anything in MrP’s post that would stir up anyone on his post where he said he got messed up pasting it.

  581. Elmo871 Elmo871 says:

I agree with MRP on losing in-state recruits. But, if a kid wants to get out of that Arkansas(there is other places in the world), I don’t blame them for that. Having said that, when we get the state raided by division foes, or schools that we beat on the field, it’s not good.

But out of state recruiting is my concern. We never had a chance of getting those kids from Hawaii. But, at least we looked. The lack of national reach is what concerns me. The majority of those kids are AR, MS, TX, OK, LA, MO, and some leftovers from Florida. Mostly border states.

Why aren’t we getting kids from Ohio, NY, TN, VA, NJ, CO, California, etc.? This is what my only concern is. Auburn, Bama, Florida, TN, LSU and other big schools are. Why don’t we target and get into these states? It’s a uphill climb when we don’t have national footprint in recruiting. Regional recruiting is good. But when you cannot sign a kid from Ohio(just an example), Then Bama and TN or LSU do every year, what is it we don’t have?

  582. MRPRFCT MRPRFCT says:

A recent national title, consistency in the top 25 polls, etc.that’s why the next year is so critical. We can really become a program if we are successful next year. We have a great instate crop and next year is our best chance to make some BCS noise! If we do that then we can be that “name” team.

  583. Ron in Germany Ron in Germany says:

Blake, I like your website ! It’s shaping up real nice. Keep up the good work !
