Arkansas commitment Chris Smith said him winning the MVP award at the state Class 3A championship game was just a byproduct of being determined to finish the year on a good note.

“First at the state championship, we had to finish 16 and 0,” said Smith, who recorded had 11 tackles, 4 sacks and 5 pass deflections to earn the MVP honors. “There was no other way to do. Offense wins games but defense wins championships. So we had to step up defensively. It was my last game as far as high school so I had to leave it all on the field.”

Smith, 6-2, 230, 4.57 of Mount Ulla (N.C.) West Rowan is good friends with athlete Lamar Ivey, who played for Mebane, Eastern Alamance and came up short against Smith and West Rowan in the state championship game.

Ivey, 6-1, 185, 4.4 has offers from North Carolina State, Kentucky and West Virginia but has interest in Arkansas after talking to Smith.

“I told him I’m his recruiting coordinator,” Smith said laughing. “Surely if he gets an offer from Arkansas he will come.”

Smith’s desire to be a part of history drove  him.

“I wanted to be one of the few teams to win back-to-back state championships,” Smith said. “I just gave it my all. My teammates on the defensive line helped get a push up the middle and the quarterback came my way. “

Smith won yet another MVP award in the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas on Saturday by having 8 tackles, 2 sacks and a 67-yard fumble return for a score to win North Carolina defensive MVP award.  The North Carolina squad defeated South Carolina 24-14 to end a two game losing streak in the all star game.

“That surprised me because that was the first long touchdown run I’ve had since middle school.”  said Smith of the 67-yard fumble return for a touchdown.

Smith will go for his third consecutive MVP award on Jan. 2 when he plays in the offense-defense All American game in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Smith’s talents recognized by North Carolina paper.
