Arkansas commitment and linebacker/ defensive end Chris Smith was named the MVP in the North Carolina State Class 3A championship game last Saturday.
Smith, 6-2, 230, 4.57 of Mount Ulla, (N.C.) West Rowan recorded 11 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 2 tackles for loss and 4 pass breakups in a 28-21 victory over Eastern Alamance.
“He had a great game,” said Coach Scott Young. “What a great way for him to end his senior year and end his career for us. I know the coaches will be glad to see his game film from the game. It’s always nice when a good player plays his best on the big stage.”
Smith was able to go one-on-one against his defender because of West Rowan’s strong defensive unit.
“They tried to account for him but we have a pretty solid defensive front and you try and double one of them you’re going to turn one loose on one-on-one and they decided to double our nose (guard).” Young said. .
Smith will participate in the Shrine Bowl, which features the North Carolina and South Carolina All Star teams in Spartanburg, (S.C.) on Saturday.
