Arkansas’ recruiting efforts in Mississippi could pay dividends in the upcoming recruiting class.

The Hogs appear to be in the hunt for two of the better prospects in the state.

Defensive linemen Carlton Martin and Byron Bennett of Madison are showing strong interest and want to check out the Razorbacks.

Martin, 6-2, 270, 4.78, has eight scholarship offers, including Arkansas, Alabama, Ole Miss, Texas Tech, Mississippi State, Baylor and others.

Martin, who attended camps at Alabama and Mississippi State, hopes to make an unofficial visit to Fayetteville to see a game.

“I like their facilities,” said Martin, who reports a 405 bench press and 600 squat. “I’ve looked on the internet and liked what I saw.”

Martin said he desires a good relationship with a school’s coaching staff along with a good school environment and community. He said one of the highlights of recruiting is getting to know the coaches at different schools along with the support staff.

Martin said he had limited knowledge of Arkansas but knows of Coach Bobby Petrino’s background and tight end D.J.Williams.

“I know he coached in the NFL for the Falcons,” Martin said of Petrino. “I know they have good running backs and good tight ends.”

Defensive line coach Bobby Allen made his way to Madison during the spring evaluation period, according to Martin. He plans to take all five of his official visits.

“I’ll probably make most of them during the season so I can see a game and then I’ll take the rest of them after the season.” said Martin, who’s thinking about studying engineering in college.

Martin, who recorded 59 tackles, 5 sacks and 30 quarterback hurries last season, said pass rushing is his favorite part of playing defense.

“I like to chase the quarterback.” Martin said with a laugh.

Bennett 6-2 ½, 250, 4.9 has offers from Arkansas, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Southern Miss, Alabama, Baylor, Texas Tech and Kentucky.

With it being in the early stages of recruiting, Bennett is still deciding on his official visits but the Razorbacks appear to be in good shape.

“I’m still thinking about it but I’m pretty sure I’m going to have to give one to Arkansas and maybe Baylor,” said Bennett, who reports a 405-pound bench press and 550 squat. “The rest of them I’m kind of undecided.”

Bennett said he’s anxious to see Arkansas’ facilities and do some fact finding.

“I like them for some reason,” Bennett said. “I watched them quite a bit last year. I want to get up there and talk to the coaches and see the how the fan base is and see how big of a family they are and see the community and checkout the recruits they’re bringing in and see if they’re getting any playing time.”

He said teaching on the high school or college level in the future appeals to him. Bennett, who mentioned that he and Martin have talked about attending the same college, said he would like to take his official visits during the season.

Bennett, who said he’ll probably make his decision late or at the end of his season, recorded 72 tackles and 12.5 sacks last season. He said he’s being recruited as a defensive end and tackle by several schools but is getting looked at by Arkansas as a defensive end.

A school’s distance from home will not hinder him from choosing a school, according to Bennett.
