Arkansas baseball coach Dave Van Horn and staff signed 12 prospects during the early signing period in November and is expected to sign a few more during the regular singing period that runs until August 1.
Left-handed pitcher Garrett Methvin, 6-2, 185 of Longview, (Tx.) Spring Hill orally committed to the Razorbacks while making an official visit June 10, the day the Hogs left for Omaha for the College World Series.
“I love the atmosphere and I love the area,” Metvin said. “I’ve always liked the school. The facilities are outstanding. The coaches were real professional with the way they handle things. I enjoyed meeting Coach (Dave) Van Horn and I feel like (pitching) coach (Dave) Jorn is going to help me a lot to get better.”
Methvin dominated opponents with a 85-89 mile per hour fast ball, a slider that hit 75-80 on the radar gun along with a circle change up and slow curve ball. He went 14-1 with 186 strikeouts in 93.2 innings and a 1.27 earn run average. As a switch hitter, Methvin hit .410 with 16 doubles, 6 home runs and 32 runs batted in.
He had 19 strikeouts in a 6 inng game but was denied a perfect game when a batter was allowed on base on a passed ball after striking out.
Hitting coach and recruiting coordinator Todd Butler was the lead recruiter of Methvin and helped lure him to the Hogs.
“He’s funny guy and keeps things light but is serious about his business and prescient,” Methvin said. “He stayed with me and stayed on me and watched me play.
He made official visits to Mississippi State and Texas Tech. He also received interest from Texas A&M.
